i play viola so cello and bass were pretty easy to pick up for me i thick the viola is the best

I play viola first, but I can play violin and my friend is teaching me cello... I'm not very good because I can't read bass clef! rolleyes Does anyone here play in an orchestra besides school? I'm in CYSO.

Cool, I thought about auditioning for CYSO, but I don't think I'm good enough. This next year would be the first year I could. I'm in the county orchestra because my school doesn't have an orchestra program. Next year, I'm going to try out for pit, though. And maybe IMEA.

I didn't think you could do IMEA if you weren't in a school music program. But you should definitely try out for CYSO- it's so much fun. Even if you don't make CYSO, CO is good too.

I'll be in a music program next year. I'm going to a more "mainstream" school, lol. But yeah, I'll definitely look into CYSO.

Psh. I'm not afraid of high screechies. Well, maybe I am during sightreading. Those are a pain to get in tune when we get up past 4th position.
I like second because I hate the spotlight. I don't want the focus to be on me or my section. I'll let the firsts steal it and have their moment. I am a second because I support. I harmonize. I add body and depth to the music.
Adjudicators of Festivals have often said that a weak orchestra is characterized by a weak middle section (2nds and Violas). If those sections are strengthened, then the ensemble as a whole improves. I aim to help better the whole orchestra.
There are also many MANY times in Symphony Orchestra where the firsts' fingers are hovering somewhere close to the tailpiece for those really really high notes, and the seconds are double an octave lower for a little body in the music. Well, it turns out that many times those firsts come to depend on that lower line that we play so they can know what the hell they're suppose to play and try to fish for it.
Believe it or not, 2nd Violins and Violas are important too.

I am so nervous about next year when we'll actually have chairs in orchestra. The stupid middle school doesn't prepare you for the high school's music ciriculum. gonk

I've played Viola for 9 years and have been in my High School's Orchestra (I was the only Viola all four years of High School) and I was in the Lima Youth Symphony Orchestra those four years as well. I've been trying to join the orchestra here at Ohio University, but I've never taken private lessons so it seems unlikely. Still love the Viola. Alto Clef all the way
