"Only a little bigger, Daddy. Did you see who I brought you?" Echo beamed at her father, proud of herself for keeping her promise to him.
Seren was snapped out of her thoughts at the sound of the male's rich voice saying her name. She blushed further at having thought of it that way. He was her best friend's brother afterall, but that made him all the more irresistible. She swam towards him, moving to a more comfortable talking distance."Yes, I'm Seren. You must be Cyabo. I've heard a little about you from your sister. She didn't do you justice." Seren looked down at the sand, her scales turning deep red after having let that much slip out.

"Yes, I saw." Mect's heart swelled as he smiled at his daughter, reaching out and smoothing her upper fin fondly. She had grown up so well, so far all of his children had. He was about to say something to Seren, but there was a note in the conversation between her and Cyabo that caught his attention, making him pause. Had she just... blushed?
Much like Mect, Cyabo wasn't one to indulge in pride, yet he still puffed a little, modestly, so much his father's son it was almost funny. In that ever-familiar way, Cy's upper fin fell across his ears, which twitched and flipped it back into place. "I'm kinda surprised you say that, since I always figured Echo to be one for a bit of exaggeration..." Damn, but you're pretty. Echo sure got that right. was what he *wanted* to say, but he knew better than that.

Blissfully oblivious to the pair behind her and taking advantage of her father's pause, Echo proceeded to ramble on to her father about all the beta she'd turned away since she'd last seen him. "There was this one male... I forget his name, though..."
"I'd figured as much too. Apparently we were both wrong about her." Seren couldn't help but be self-conscious around Cy. His nearness made her nervous, she felt like there were millions of tiny seahorses in her stomach wriggling around. He was so handsome that she was rooted to the spot, unable to move even if she wanted to, Not that I would want to move away from him.... Gods he's gorgeous... If only we were alone maybe I'd be able to piece together more than two sentences at a time. Seren blushed again, snapping out of her thoughts once more and looking up at Cy.

Oh, now *that* made Mect's ears twitch. His attention brought back to his youngest, he peered down at her. "What one male?" He kept his voice light, but inwardly wondered who the hell thought they were good enough to talk to his daughter...
At that very moment, Cy had chosen to look back up from the ground, where his gaze had settled just moments before, so he wouldn't seem like he was staring at her or anything. An electrical charge went through him when their eyes met, and he swallowed, hard. Get a hold of yourself, man. This is Seren. *Seren*. Pa would kill you. Coughing lightly, he decided to take a different route with this conversation. Didn't hurt to be friendly, after all. "You and Echo been getting along all right?"

"Oh Daddy, I turned him away. I've not found a single boy I've liked at all yet. Are they all so weak and unpony-like?" Echo wrinkled her nose, reliving her last unpleasant venture into the land of courting in which the poor male ended up on his back in the sand for trying to make a move on her.
Seren looked away quickly when their eyes met, It had felt as if he'd looked into her soul. Grateful for the change in subject, Seren blushed a little and answered his question. "Echo is like a sister to me. I come from a big family, but all of my sisters live in different tanks than me, so I've never had another girl to talk to. It's kind of refreshing having her around. She keeps the unwanted suitors away."

Mect chuckled a bit, then reached out to tweak Echo's nose a little. "They can't all be ponies, you know." He was torn between the idea of his baby girl being stolen away by another beta, and the thought of her living a life alone, never knowing the touch of love. "Just make sure you keep an open mind an' all, and remember that strength comes from more than just ponies."
Cyabo laughed at that, a rich, mellow sound that caught Mect's attention and caused the older male to look in their direction. "Keeping unwanted suitors away? What's she doing, chasing them off with a large piece of driftwood?"

"Alright Daddy.." Echo gave her father a big hug, wishing she could see him more often. She rarely saw him as it was now, living in two separate tanks. And she felt as if she didn't really know him and her brother as well as she should.
Seren caught her breath and laughed with Cy. "Close.. They see me and they come over, then they see her and leave me alone. It's rather refreshing not being bothered, but then I have to pull her away to avoid her hurting someone." Seren looked up at Cy, hoping to catch his eyes again.

Ruffling her upper fin like he had when she was little, Mect grinned broadly. "But while you're waiting on that, guess what your brother and I are up to?"
"Hurting someone? Echo?" So surprised at this idea, Cyabo actually looked back up, catching those eyes again. The spark was still there, but didn't tear at his insides quite so much, instead settling deep down in his chest where it flickered merrily. "I can't picture her doing something like that..." His tone wasn't doubtful, more curious, an invititation for Seren to elaborate. No, he didn't just like hearing her speak or anything...

Echo pulls away from her father to look up at him."Ummm... Finding a girl for Cy finally?"
"Well.. not really hurting.. More injuring their egos. Your sister tends to be a little blunt in telling guys exactly what she thinks of them. I believe the last time a guy made a pass at her he ended up on the floor but there was much more damage to his pride than his body." Seren smiled her biggest smile up at him, swimming a little closer, but not close enough for it to be uncomfortable.

"'Finally'? Just for that one, girlie, I think I'll be letting you ask *him* to find out what we're doing." Giving her a grin, he nudged her over in the direction of the two others, completely oblivious to the fact that Echo would be intruding.
Another bit of not-quite-prideful puffing, at the idea of his sister managing to best a bunch of ne'erdowellers. "That's probably because they're all ashamed of being beat by a girl." The modest part of him added, "Though they probably don't realize that she's stronger than she looks, 'cause of her pony blood."

Echo, pushed in their direction by their father, swims up right in between Seren and Cy. Turning to her brother she asks, "So... have you found a girl yet? or are you still looking? Seren's terminally single too, but it's by choice I guess, she always tells them all no."
Shocked and horrified at the things about her that just came out of Echo's mouth, Seren blushes and makes a face at Echo before explaining. "I've just not found anyone I'm interested in yet. At least I don't go around calling all the males lacking pony blood weak and beating up on them."
Echo looked at Seren, "I don't beat up on anybody. It's not my fault I can defend myself."

If the ocean floor had opened up and swallowed him whole, Cy probably wouldn't have been happier. Had Echo *really* just called him terminially single in front of Seren? It was one thing for a girl to be picky, or not show too much interest, but with guys it made them seem socially inept... And luckily, Seren herself switched the conversation over to Echo's ability to scare grown males. Forcing himself to chuckle, he said, "I'll probably find a girl long before you're able to stop beating up on your possible suitors."
Mect hung back, watching the three fish discuss their social lives, or lack thereof.

Seren pauses to think about Echo's words. He's single too? I bet he wouldn't want an old single fish like me anyway. "Actually Echo, I AM interested in one male, but I'd never tell you who he is because you have a big mouth." And I'd be too embarrassed if he said no. She glanced up at Cy, checking for his reaction, silently hoping he felt the same about her.
Echo blinked at both of their words, pondering if they could possibly have a liking for each other, or if it was just her imagination. They HAVE been over here alone for a little while... Hmmm.. "I don't beat them up, I defend myself, and I bet you won't find a girl before I find a guy. You're too chicken to ask anyone!" She was hoping to scare her brother into asking the first available female in the vicinity. Luckily, the only female happened to be the also relationship challenged Seren. Turning to Seren she replies, "There's no need to make someone else up for me Ser.. I'm not your mother."

Seren's words echoed in his head. Interested? For some reason, the idea of her being interested in someone else burned and twisted in his chest, causing him to puff up and take greater umbrage from his sister's declarations. The possibility that this male could be him didn't even occur to him, since they had just met, and he wouldn't think that she could be interested in him that quickly. "Whether she's making it up or not, Echo, she's got a point. You *do* have a big mouth." With a steely glare, he gazed down at her warningly. "It's really rude to bring up folks' personal life in front of people they've barely known, y'know. I'm recommending you drop the subject. Now."

Echo, not realizing she'd said anything wrong, was caught completely off guard by her brother's threat. Her lower lip trembling and her eyes filling with angry tears, she turned right around and swam off, leaving the two alone but for mect still watching from afar.
Seren was also caught off guard by how defensive Cy got at Echo's words. She took a second to gather her wits about her before saying, "I'm not sure she meant it like that... but it's best to leave her alone and let her get over her anger before trying to talk to her. She's stubborn and trying now will only make her worse." Seren sighs a little, wondering what exactly got the Cy the most.
