Aven XVI Palsa-San When it comes to RPG's. GameSpot normally talks about the 'Big Name' games, such as Final Fantasy. But they will mention games such as Ar tonelico, when their being released, or if something worth mentioning comes up. RPGamer on the other hand, will tell you whats going on in Japan in the RPG world. So you'll hear about a lot of games before they ever reach the interests of GameSpot. Another sad thing is that GameSpot only seems to be interested in games that are most likely going to receive a U.S. release, or have extremely high res graphics. One thing that ticks me off is that GameSpot will often use phrases like "For those who are interested in this type of game", when referring to Gust's games. I've noticed that, its actually very similar to gameinformer (magazine) which I am subscribed to only so I will know what/when games come out. I sometimes can't read the reviews because of the unbelievably biased opinions. I was surprised with their rating for Mana Khemia (7) which, for that kind of game is very high One of the worst reviews I've ever read, was of Chrono Cross, on GameSpot. They mention several times in the review of how the game has its drawbacks and flaws, and believe me, it does. However, they gave it an editors choice rating of 10. Why give it a rating of 10 if your going to state that its far from perfect?! Chrono Trigger, one of the greatest games ever made, was given a 9.5, and the DS remake an 8.5. Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana was given an editors rating of 7.6, even the users score was 8.5. When everyone I've talked to would give the game at least a 9.5. Chrono Cross was horrible, they killed off all of the first games characters and destroyed the entire reason of saving the world in the first game. Where Chrono Trigger had an awesome battle system, that took place on the field, Chrono Cross had a low budged battle system, which took place off the field, and was taken from Xenogears. Chrono Cross also added over 40 characters, the problem? the story lost relevance. As a game by itself, Chrono Cross is ok, but as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, its pathetic. The only reason I liked the game, was because Noriko Mitose sang the ending.

I'm sorry, I basically ignored your last post about the Chrono Series. You have very good points, and I'll just agree because my points will be pathetic. I basically agree with you anyways, I really enjoy/ed Chrono Cross but I've never tried Chrono Trigger so I have nothing to compare to. I'm sure you are correct though, especially with the character party issue, though I LOVE a huge cast such as that, it really lost its material, each character having an actual personality and connection to one another....though many of them had shallow connections.

True. It did have some really cool characters, but seriously, who cares about a talking voodoo doll, or something that looks like it just jumped out of a bowl of salad. Honestly speaking, I think it would have been better if they had dropped the irrelevant characters from the cast. There are a lot of considerably better side characters in the game, that were originally going to be playable, but they decided not to include them in the mix, Leena's sister for example, still has the character portrait.

I'm not liking the looks of MK2 so far. I'll write a full review when I actually play it but right now...I think it's completely stripping away many of the things that made the first game great.

kerushii-sushi I'm not liking the looks of MK2 so far. I'll write a full review when I actually play it but right now...I think it's completely stripping away many of the things that made the first game great. As I said earlier on A Reyvateil's Melody. On A Reyvateil's Melody, Palsa Lazy Nash And, once again the Iris characters get the shaft... did the Iris trilogy bombed in Japan or something? I heard hardcore Atelier fans hated the Iris (and MK) series. I wouldn't exactly call it hate, it's more like "Hey, you went and altered the whole concept of the series!! (glare)". My feeling is that when Gust released the Iris series, they did two things. 1. They lost a feature that the older games had. 2. They acquired a new feature that the older games didn't have. Whether or not the change is considered good or bad is up to the player. However, in Japan, they saw a lot of the changes as a bad thing, but at the same time, Gust had introduced the series to other parts of the world, and there it was excepted the way it was released. So now Gust had two audiences to please, Japan and U.S./Europe. etc. My feeling is that the Ar tonelico and Mana Khemia series were created for the purpose of satisfying both audiences. With Mana Khemia and Ar tonelico, they could focus more on the battle system and saving the world, and since it's not titled as an Atelier game, both the Japanese, American and European audiences would except it. At the same time, they could revert the Atelier series back to its original base, focusing more on the Synthesis engine. I remember reading a post awhile back on someones blog, where they had received a special tour of Gust's company (so lucky). From what he said, the manager at Gust, at that time, felt that people in the U.S. would not be interested in the older Atelier series games, I of course disagree with that. By the way, he also mentioned being shown pictures of a game that was in development, which was Mana Khemia, so that should give a good estimate on when it was. Unfortunately, I lost the address, so I can't post it.

I don't have many valid opinions on Mana Khemia 2 yet, but from what I see so far, it seems that they improved some aspects from the first game, added additional features, and stripped some that made Mana Khemia likable initially.
Like the first game, this title would have to grow to me as well and I'll have to live without a "real" animated opening. XD; Last time I've seen it, there was more picture stills and effects than a really animated opening to supplement the title. I'm not that fond of it, but I'll probably forgive it once I find that I like some of the "improved" features in the title.
I'm not saying that a animated opening = good game, but it did improve my impression a bit. XD;;
And Palsa-san, I like your argument~ Although some of Japan's loyal followings weren't pleased with the Iris series, I feel that the expansion overseas provided the development team more newer opportunities to expand their ideas (such as Ar tonelico and Mana Khemia), but it's in lieu with more audiences to please other than their initial fanbase.
And, thanks to the off-branched titles, GUST can re-please the initial following with a PS3 Atelier title that focuses on aspects the Atelier series started off with. ^^

Yeah~ and the two stories converge once you experience both scenarios~ =D
I wonder how the limited edition set will come out as... (I think it'll be a soundtrack sampler, but there are other options as well.)

Yeah, a sound tracks seems to be the most likely edition to the game.
