So, I just got snare in marching band, and quickly realized it's a lot harder than I expected. 6 hits, one beat, 137 bpm. For some, that might not seem to bad, but as is the point of this thread, my speed, control, and precision are all, well, crap. So are there any exercises or licks you guys do to improved any of the above? Or flam exercises, I suck at those, too. gonk

Its a little hard to help with things like that when you cant show what your doing. maybe you should ask one of the other snare players in your band for help. sweatdrop

sixtuplets at 137 bpm? hm... i dunno wat to say there

as for flams i suck at those too so lol (thats why i play bass drum : P)

Do paradiddles really fast. That's a pretty good exercise. It's pretty basic but it works.

Flams are fun. But drags are even better. I can't stand paradiddles... but they work.
I've been know to get up to ten in a beat...
Yes, it was 120... but still. Close enough.

Continuously do 8-on-a-hand over and over again and speed up SLOWLY.

Another one that really helped me is double stroke really really slow and speed up really really slowly as well.

One other one to help with sextuplets is to work on six-stroke rolls. - equals regular note, = equals diddle. -==-

Our "Percussion instructor" Trevor has an exercise called "6-4-5" [{copy righted fools}], you can do it on snare or bass, but snare has to do traditional stick holding, so it goes like this;
Right hand- 1&2&3&4&5&6& {switch to left hand } 1&2&3&4&5&6& {Rh-}1&2&3&4& {lh} 1&2&3&4& {Rh}1&2&3&4&5& {lh} 1&2&3&4&5& {then finish with right hand} 1,
so you play that really slow and increase your tempo but the height of the stick stays the same always at 6 to 3 inches so it doesn't get hard, and there is a cymbal part, just crash on the ones.
yeah 6-4-5 is a really good warm-up exercise because it helps your wrists and your speed.

at least mine, not everyone elses, its 8measures of 16ths with different accent patterns that build up, and they go faster, really hard for tenors and pretty hard for basses
we got going so fast one year it was incredible
