The black and white lion rolled over on his stomach in the shade of Pride Rock, sighing. It was just another day, just the same as always, and thanks to his heavy dark mane, he was hot on top of it. Indaba didn't really mind another lazy day, because honestly he kind of liked getting to be lazy, but after awhile the days all started to blur together.

Was it too much to ask for a little rain? At least it wouldn't be so hot!

The young lioness padded, awestruck, slightly further away from the rock, so far unnoticed. He ears perked, blue eyes looking over the giant rock, basically pridelands landmark, she'd never seen it so close.

Kimaji didn't go close, however. As friendly as she was, she assumed this may be someone's home; would they like her merely trotting in? She'd learned about prides by now, oh yes. And she knew well enough she didn't belong here. Maybe she sould just go-- yeah. Didn't want to get in any trouble!

But then something white caught her attention, and for a moment, she mused over the idea her dad might be here, rather than hunting, but soon she realised the lion had a black mane, black markings. Alot of black.

The adolescent tilted her head and sat down, before she remembered where she was, and scramled to her feet.

"Sorry! " She almost shouted that for staring, but then she'd call attention!

"Sorry!"

The frantic exclamation filtered through into his sleep, but it was a moment or two before he could be stirred to respond. One blue eye cracked open, and he peered around to see who'd spoken. Oh. It was a gray...gray...lioness! Identifying things upside-down and with one eye open could be tricky.

"What for?" he rumbled sleepily, still a bit groggy.

"I stared! 'n Swaii-- my dad-- said thats not nice. "

She said, tilting her head at the lion, but didn't move any closer. Maybe she shouldn't get close to the big rock thing-- and he was kind of close to it. "'n I also dun live here. " She shrugged, looking slightly down at her paws.

"So, sorry. " She said, then offered a weak smile, flicking her left ear as a bug buzzed by it.

"Oh." Still upside-down, Indaba blinked. "I didn't know you were staring anyway. You didn't have to apologize."

Deciding he really ought to get a better look at the stranger, he rolled over with a stretch and a groan, shaking the sleep from his head. Now he could see her properly. "Oh, you don't? Well, that's okay I guess," he ventured, "Long as you don't hurt anybody or something. Where're you from, anyway, if you're not from here?"

Kimaji held back a small laugh. But then she had been staring at him while he slept! And that wasn't nice either.

"I'd never hurt anyone! " She said, taken aback by what he said. Not like she could, anyways. Build-wise, the lioness was rather small and thin for her age, and she wouldn't want to hurt anyone either.

"I'm from the forest! " She said, with a smile, then frowned slightly. "Or whats left of it. Waters all dryin' up. " She shrugged, looking back at the direction she'd come from.

Indaba tilted his head, curious. Water drying up? But there was plenty here! How odd.

"Is that why you're here, then? Come looking for somewhere not dry?" The adult lion stood up with reluctant effort after his nap, unable to help giving a huge yawn. Aware that it was poor manners, he quickly apologized, "Excuse me."

She tilted her head. "Kinda. There's no food anymore too. Everything left. So I was tryin' to find mice out here! " She nodded smartly. The only problem was, the mice out here were more skittish than in the forest, where, when she was younger, used to be plump and well fed.

"But I didn't mean to come so far in. " The young lioness shrugged. "We find water further out. " She blinked when he yawned, and smiled inwardly; Swaii yawned soo much! And his were just as wide.

"Who're you? "

"Mice?" Indaba's face and ears fell in surprise. "But those are hardly worth the effort! Not even a mouthful! You must be starving." That was just terrible! Concern caught at him, thanks to his loving upbringing.

"I'm Indaba," he answered.

"I only know how to catch those. " She grinned meekly. "I eat more when Swaii hunts! Or sometimes I catch hares. " She nodded. "But he's not very good at it anymore. " Her poor father was getting old. "Swaii tells me to go after bigger stuff, but their alot faster than I am. " Being kind of little didn't help much, either. "So I just catch lotsa mice. " She noded proudly; mice were easy now!

"I'm Kimaji! Nice to meet you. " The little lioness smiled, sitting down and curling her tail around her hind paw.

"Oh. We could probably find you something if you want? There's lots of hunters here." Like him! Hunting alone wasn't exactly practical or often successful, though. It would be easier to see if someone else had some food to spare.

"Who's Swaii?" he inquired.

She blinked for a moment. "No! I don't wanna be any trouble. " She nodded. Besides, she wasn't sure about how Swaii would feel about that. And then she blinked. She'd already told him who Swaii was-- maybe he'd missed it.

"Swaii is my dad. He looks lots like me, only he has a mane. " Had she finally learned what it was called?! That it wasn't defined as 'fluffy'? "Only his is white, like your fur, but not your mane. " She nodded. Strangely, she hadn't seen that many lions with lighter manes. Just Maji and Swaii, really.
