It had been a beautiful sunset. The desert stretched out, infinite and flat; nothing obstructed the golden sky and it towered overhead into deep night blue, splashed with purple and peach tinged clouds. A film of red lay over the horizon.
The walls of the temple were rose-colored and still warm from the day. On the hard-packed ground not far from the building sat a small Malu child, facing the spot where the sun had melted into the sand, perfectly still. His eyes were closed and his breath was so slow and soft that he might have been sleeping.
Wolfgang had been here all evening. Some Malu had passed by behind him, but he had not noticed them. The child had been spending a lot of time sitting by himself, inert, in various places in and around the temple. When he was with others he was perfectly pleasant -- friendly, polite, and good-natured. When he was alone like this, however, it was difficult to strike up a conversation with him. He was completely lost in his own world.

Black eyes blinked as the Malu watched the sun setting into the horizon and out of sight. At the perfect moment, Aylen walked over to the temple so that she could see where she was walking rather then having to walk in the dark night towards the temple.
The sun had been rather warm that day, and Aylen already missed the comfort of the sun on her black speckled back. Her tricolored ears seemed to twist in all directions as she walked over towards where the little Malu was sitting all alone.
A curious look crossed her face as she walked over to him. Her back hooves clipped against the ground as she reached his side and sat down. "Hello... Why are you all alone?" She asked as she watched the sky a little more as it turned its multiple colors before it totally became a black with the little white stars keeping the night from becoming too dark for one to see.

Wolfgang's ear moved, but the rest of him didn't. His eyes even stayed closed. His eyelids did move, as if he was blinking with them still closed. But eventually he did turn his head and look at the blue Malu. There was a certain blankness on his face, something that transcended the word 'calm.'
"Sunset is pretty," he said matter-of-factly. It wasn't as if he had not heard the question -- it was as if he thought this was an answer to it.

Aylen watched as the other Malu seemed to be relaxing while watching the gorgeous sunset. The blue Malu wished she could do the same, but she always seemed to be thinking about something. Quietly, she made her way over towards him to where she was a few feet away from him.
"Yes... it is very gorgeous." The older Malu agreed as she looked at the other Malu's serene face. How could such a young one be so serene? Usually they wanted to jump around and play with one another.

"I like to watch it every night," he continued. "It's very slow. The colors change very slowly, which makes my thoughts move slowly too." He smiled and looked back at the desert, though it was little more than blackness. "Watching the sun rise does the same thing. And watching the clouds float." That was a favorite pastime of his. The gentle drifting and morphing of cloud shapes was like the world, he thought; everything was always changing and moving around, but there was always something beautiful to see.
