Like most cervitaurs, Ceryn is protective of those around her, especially her guardian Harper. That isn't to say that she is all serious, however! She delights in racing and playing with the young centaurs she has met.

An Amazon who was trying to return to her homeland after escaping slavers, Harper was shipwrecked on the island and rescued the young Ceryn from wolves. She has been raising her as an Amazon, including weapons work and worship of Brigit and Artemis. She named the baby cervitaur after the Ceryneian Hind from her tribe's legends.

This little stuffed 'taur was found with Ceryn. She refers to it as Boo. Harper added the feathered armband at Ceryn's request after the little cervitaur recieved her own.

Armband - the armband that Ceryn wears is an Amazon adornment. Each feather on it represents a milestone or accomplishment in her life.

Staff - Since Harper's main weapon is a quarterstaff, that is the one that young Ceryn learned first. She is seldom without it. It also comes in useful to knock fruit from trees when she is hungry!

The sound of seagulls woke me. I could feel warm sunlight on my back and the rough grittiness of sand under my cheek. I don't know how long I lay there unmoving, in awe of the fact that I was alive.
Thirst roused me from my shock. Slowly climbing to my feet I took stock of my surroundings. Scrapes and bruises covered me, but there were no serious injuries from my ordeal. The beach was covered with bits of flotsam from the wreck - pieces of wood and cloth that were gently moving with the tide's rhythm. To the right I could hear the very welcome sound of running water, and I made my careful way over to it to find a merry little stream racing to the ocean. I followed it upstream to where the water was sweet and slaked the thirst.
That need taken care of I let my mind wander for a moment. The events of the past several moons replayed themselves in my mind. The betrayal of the villagers we thought were friends, the brutality my Amazon sisters and myself endured at the hands of the slavers we were sold to, the vicious reality of the life of a proud warrior forced to "perform" for the enjoyment of others. Well, the grace of the Goddess allowed me to escape that horrid place, although where Her Path had led me now was still a mystery.
Standing, I decided the first thing to do would be to see what could be salvaged from the wreckage of my ill-fated vessel. As I gathered the bits of cloth and rope I spared a quick prayer for the poor sailors who did not seem to have fared as well as I in the breaking of our ship. They were rough lads to be sure, but had offered me no insult while on my homeward journey. There were a few treasures amid the wreckage; a good hunting knife that I remembered the first mate wearing, a chest of hard waybread that had somehow survived the soaking, and - Goddess Bless! a leather belt pouch with flint and steel for fire and a small whetstone that would surely come in handy.
As I sat around a small campfire that night I decided to follow the stream into the forest the next day. It seemed the best way to find other people, and perhaps discover exactly where I had landed. The storm that had destroyed our ship had blown us far from our course before that final terrible wave smashed the wooden hull in. As I fashioned a rough pack from the remnants of the sails I sang the songs of my people and wondered if I would ever see them again.
***
Seagulls again awoke me, this time to a dawn that held a promise of adventure. Gathering my meager supplies I set off into the forest. A stand of willow had provided me with a walking staff and the familiar weight felt good in my hand. There was a path of sorts that followed the stream which made my way easier than I had expected. Midday found me eating the waybread while resting beside the rushing water. Suddenly, the stream's melody was shattered by a human scream and the sounds of a wolf pack baying in full hunt. A crashing sound came closer and I stood, staff in one hand and knife in the other. A deer...no, a human...no, a cross between them came leaping over the underbrush and collapsed not two legnths from me. It - she - had a bundle in her arms and terrible wounds raking down her sides and belly. I ran over, just in time to send give the leading wolf a reason to fear me and my staff. A few more whacks and the others learned that lesson as well, and eventually faded back into the forest.
I turned, and realized my help had come to late for the poor creature they had harried. She had breathed her last as I tried to defend her. I whispered a prayer as I knelt beside her and took the bundle she had carried, which was moving slightly. Unwrapping it I was shocked to see a small bairn, plainly that of the mother who had just died. Her small spotted coat was soft as down, and she blinked up at me with solemn blue eyes.
I built a pyre that day to send the mother to the Otherworld with the ceremonies of my people. There was a small pack with a stuffed toy and a few trinkets that I will keep for her. The little one I named Ceryn, after the legend of the hind sacred to my Goddess. I have named and claimed her as my sister until such time that I find her people, and have woven for her the feathered band that shows her to be an Amazon.
And for now, she sleeps and I shall join her in the dreamlands.

"Ceryn, come here, I have something for you," Harper called her young charge over to where she had been working in the warm sunlight. Although they had met a few other Taurs and humans, Harper had decided that they should live apart in a small clearing away from the villages. A nice dry cave provided a comfortable home for them, the sandy floor proving most useful as the infant cervitaur had grown.
Ceryn approached at a gait that was half trot and half jump. The youngling reveled in movement and activity, and seldom simply walked from place to place.
"What is it, Harper?" she asked in her high young voice. "Is it a feather?" Ceryn had been very excited when Harper had explained what the feathers she wore meant, and was eager to get some of her own.
"Well, this isn't a feather, but it will lead to you getting one if you work hard. This is your very own staff, Ceryn!" She held out a straightened and smooth piece of wood, wrapped with a bit of rabbit pelt on one end and decorated with some woven rope. It reached shoulder high on the young cervitaur as she took it from Harper and stood with it beside her.
"My own? This one is mine to keep?" Ceryn asked in an awed voice. She had been scolded more than once for wanting to play with Harper's staff.
"Yup, munchkin, this one is for you. I have decided that it is time for you to start learning some weaponwork."
Ceryn danced in joy, nearly knocking her caretaker in the shoulder with her new weapon.

Over the next few days, Harper begain laying the groundwork for the lessons that could prove lifesaving in the cervitaur's future.
"Keep it balanced as you move, sweetie. You don't have to hold it very tight - do that and your arm will be tired all the time. Staff work is all about circles." She reminded Ceryn, who was still more than a little unsire of herself.
"You make it look so easy!" the youngling sighed, as she once more moved her staff into a ready position.
"That's because I have been using mine for so long! C'mon let's try again! Show me that last move I taught you."
A few moments later, Harper was regretting those wrds as she lay on the ground holding one knee and trying not to curse. Ceryn had attempted the move, only to overbalance and fall. In her wild swinging to stay upright she had caught Harper across the leg with the staff, sending the Amazon to the ground.
"I think that's enough for today," she said ruefully. "I'm ok, don't cry, little one." she reassured Ceryn, who had burst into tears when Harper had fallen and she realized what she had done. "Accidents happen, my friend Teria once knocked the Queen into the mud during practice!"
That got a hiccupy giggle from the young Cervitaur. "Was she mad?" she asked.
"Nope, she just picked up a handful and threw it at Teria! We all had a glorious mudfight after that! Why don;t I head to the cave and start some supper. If you get some apples, we can bake them for dessert with some of that honey I found."
Carefully getting to her feet, Harper headed towards the cave while Ceryn took her new staff and went to the apple tree.
"Appless, apples, I'm gonna get some apples," she sang to herself as she trotted to where it grew. Once she arrived she looked around for new fallen ones to no avail. ""There has to be some, I want baked ones!" she said to herself as she swung her staff around idly. AN idea occured to her then, and she got as close as she could to the tree, bracing her fron hooves against the cark so she was as tall as she could reach. Using the staff - whack! two apples flew to land on the ground nearby. With a grin she swung again, and more apples fell.
"I did it!" she said in glee as she gathered up her bright red treasures and headed back to the cave.

"These are wonderful, Ceryn, and you were very smart to think of that," Harper said later that night as they sat in front of the fire enjoying the treat. "In fact," Harper reached over and snagged a feather from her own braid. "I think you deserve this, since you figured out that your staff is more than just a weapon, but something with many many uses!" Reaching over she tied it into Ceryn's hair, while the youngster just sat there, eyes shining bright in the firelight.
