So my loach has gotten stuck in the tube part of my filter about five or six times today. I discovered him in the actual filter under the sponge earlier this evening and he seemed fine when I let him out; No hypervenilating and minimal darting around the tank. He's gotten stuck in the actual filter about twice (the last time was around when we first got him, and I noticed most kuhli loaches tend to get stuck in there at least once.) and stuck on the filter intake about five times. As of now he's resting in the rock cave in the tank.
The only abnormal behavior of his that I've noticed is him skimming around the top of the tank; Usually he keeps to the bottom. I'm actually not even sure what gender he actually is. :gonK:;

So yes. For reference, this
User Image
is a kuhli loach and this
User Imageis what type of filter I have. (Sorry about the picture size) >> Going through the filter doesn't seem to damage loaches as much as it would other types of fish, but...I still can't like this. I moved the filter over to see if it was the area behind the filter he was interested in, but I'd rather him not go near it....

So does anyone know what sort of behavior this is? Could my loach be sick? Is he gonna die? Could he just be hungry? Should I put him in a breeder to keep him away from the filter until I get my tank back in order? Give it to me straight, doc. :gonK: :gonK:

One more thing-There's still a residue of methylyne blue in the tank, as I haven't been able to get a new charcoal for my tank yet. Could that be the culprit? The rest of my fish (all cory catfish and one dwarf african frog) seem fine.
Help... gonk

I actually had that problem too, but not with a loach, with dwarf cyclids.
I found a bottle cap that was the same size as the 'mouth' of the filter tube and fit it snugly. I cut a cross shaped hole in it wich still let the filter work but the fish couldn't get in.
It means I have to clean the tube more often, but it works fine.

I don't know why your fish is acting that way though.
Maybe it just wants darker hiding places, or the tank is too light for it? Or it could be that another fish is bulling it? I don't know. sad

you can cover the intake with panty hose and secure it with a PLASTIC tie as it is toxic to use the metal ones the come with trash bags. That way the filter gets the full flow , it keeps the fish out and you have an extra layer or filtering (which also means you need to rinse it occasionally)
as for how it is acting you can only hold your breath and hope for the best. You never know why they do things really . We can only guess.

Lol , i was going to suggest the panty hose , but i see that has allready been put in. Spunges work well too. Most or all Loaches are nochternal and need lots of dark caves and hidey holes to stay in tell dark. if you done have many caves your loach may be trying to seek shelter in the filter where its dark. Good luck! keep us updated.

Kuhli loaches just like to put themselves in strange places. It probably goes up into the filter itself just because it wants to. Mine used to do that- he was always fine lol
To fix the problem (like has already been suggested) use some kind of cover on the filter tube, or you could ultimately just get a new filter. The pantyhose is actually a pretty good idea-
As for why the Kuhli's going to the top of the tank is probably just because the water doesn't have enough oxygen; you should probably change the charcoal you have in there. That might help. ^^
Kuhli loaches are pretty hardy though...I wouldn't worry too much about him...I hope he's okay. crying
