Some friends and I were having a discussion about something my hapkido instructor said to me a few weeks ago. He had heard I had my own academy and said that now from a business stand point I shouldn't be at his academy because we were competition.

Well, we were discussing, and saying how no martial artist should truly be competition in that sort, maybe as friendly competition in a tournament, but not in a business standpoint. we shouldn't be trying to put each other out of business, and someone shouldn't be kicked out of one academy because they attend another academy at the same time.

We devised a plan to unite out four academies in a new association, for any art, to unify and help us all out.

Within this association, we decided that we would have tournaments of all sorts, and anyone within one academy could go to another academy in the association without hassle. Also, we decided that n this association the head of each academy should add $35 (USD) to the funds of the association that way we can fund our tournaments without off the wall prices for the participants.

Well, this new association is called the UMAA, or the United Martial Artist's Association.

I think this would be a great way to get people who are trying to find academies in a place they are moving to an amazing help, and would help out the martial artist community.

What do you think? If you want more information if you are curious about joining, please send me a PM.

That sounds like a great idea. Wish the clubs where I lived would do that sort of things. They're all in the state of mind of "we're better then everyone else". I visited a club and had a go with a friend who wanted to start. I went for support.

I was told not to come back until I had quit my other club

Sounds like a good idea in theory, but I've found that quite often associations like that degenerate into politics and backstabbing.
Just watch yourself k?

We all just finally got tired of going to more than one academy and getting told to not come back because we still did another martial art at the same time.

I'll keep a lookout, but all of the academies that are there right now I'm friends with all of the head masters, and all of us at some point or another have gotten unfair treatment because at some point or another we've gone to more than one academy at a time. We're just trying to make life easier.

anyone who has an academy of their own, or an instructor who is interested at the idea, please let me know, we're always welcome to new members biggrin

In my area, other students have not seen that problem. I know guys that take like 4 different styles of Martial Arts, all at different dojos. Even some of our teachers, teach and are learning other styles.

Same here.

A friend of mine who works security has started what is effectively a fight club. Many of the local instructors, black belts (or equivilent) and bouncers all getting together once a week for a sparring session.
I'm telling you now it ******** rules. We got Karate, tkd, muay thai, ju-jitsu and boxing instructors and people from lots of other assorted arts. And as quite a lot of the participents are bouncers, most of them are ******** massive.
Real learning experience
