What is it about romances that can really get under your skin?
I've discovered that mine is in regards to the sex scenes, but not the fact that they're often in there. It's how those scenes can sometimes be written. For example, I finished Lord of the Nile not too long ago. There was some sex in there as one would expect, especially with a title whose cover shows a man's abs in front of hieroglyphs. However, the sex was only described (if you can even call it "described") in one or two pages... WHAT? That's the kind of description you'd see in a short story, not a 300 page novel. If an author is going to break down and have sex in a romance novel at least put a decent amount of details in your prose! Sometimes I could get more action in a Stephen King novel!
My final thoughts on the matter? If there's going to be sex between characters please tell me what transpires within a reasonable length of like four to six pages at least. Otherwise don't even describe the sex at all and leave it to the reader's imagination what goes on behind locked doors.

well from a guys view it is the fact that no guy can ever live up to the stories main male character and at times it can get a bit bad in writing poor word choice for example

Well sometimes that true, but there's one Male Author that poses as a Female writer and his sex scenes are good!
Plus, Mintchocochocochip is right, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse book's rock!

The men seem to be rich, handsome and a bit of a caveman. The women are beautiful, poor and in desperate need of help of some kind

Mehh. Stephenie Meyer :S Anywhoo, I hate it when books tend to be the same for as much as sex scene. Come on, authors, atleast add some kind of spice into it. :O Like Time Travelers Wife, they only mentioned the were going to have sex, and no details. Meh.

My romance pet peeve is when the female protagonist, almost always during her first time too, automatically climaxes after a few thrusts from the male protagonist (can I even be talking about this on Gaia? xd ) Let's say it gives a really skewed version of female sexual pleasure. And I can't believe women authors actually write that stuff!

I hate how the women are easily subdued by the men in the stories. It's just... come on! They could at least put up a better fight! It's aggravating and causes me to hate the book. I've actually stopped a book half way through because of that. It was horrible.

Sometimes stories do have lengthy sex descriptions, but most are enough to win the Bad Sex Award. D;

I hate it when the scenes are too mushy or the men too feminine. It seems too unrealistic to me. On the other hand I don't like it when they use really foul language either.

I hate it when there's betrayal. I know this is necessary in stories but I hate that feeling when somebody betrays. >.<
