So I'm going to Japan for 4 weeks and going to be getting a lolita dress, of course. My mother knows this and keeps saying that lolita is just a fashion trend and you'll wear your expensive dress like 3 times then never wear it again! I told her that the G&L Bibles are coming out in English so that the trend will probably take off here in America but she didn't budge!

Any ideas for making her realize that lolita is something I love?

Well as far as the fashion itsself, you could always point out that it's been around for about 20 years... I can't really tell you how to convince her you won't just stop liking it eventually. Like if it were me, I would just point out to my parents the fact that I still have and listen to my Spice Girl cds I got when I was 9, or something like that... It'd be a good point of argument that I don't just get into stuff and then become disinterested in it shortly after...

i guess it depends on the relationship you to have!!! Like if my mom said that I'de just point out that her 80's over done blush went out forever ago and was just a trend and she still wears it or something!!! hehe but some parents would get mad and ground you i guess...but i have a cool mom who would just laugh probally. Uhm, maybe mention that alot of things aren't nessarily in style but you still wear them and show her ways of updating lolita even!!! For example with accesorys and such how many looks your lolita dress can get!! And like namida_no_chi said, you could always point out an old stable you or she loves that isen't in style but you still take part of!!!!

Wow, that's a long time for a fashion to be around, I knew it got popular in the 90's but it's hard to think that far back in time is really 10 or 15 years. o.o I've liked anime ever since middle school and I haven't gotten out of that yet, so I guess that's one thing.

And lol my mom doesn't have Fashion at all. She barely wears make-up and her daily wardrobe is Tee and jeans or Sweater and jeans. XD

I just know she'll mention all the cards (Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh) and even beanie babies that we spent tons of money one and now are sitting on shelves doing nothing >_<

Is she going with you?

If not, just go out and buy it anyway. lol. My mother doesn't particularly care for lolita either, but the second she learned I was going back to Japan, she knew I was coming back with clothes no matter what.

... and I did. lol.

... and she actually ended up liking everything I got! Which was REALLY surprising!

If she mentions beanie babies and the like, you could always just come back with the fact that lolita is useful. You have to wear cloths, so why not Lolita? Whereas beanie babies are just useless things which are made for sitting on a shelf doing absolutely nothing after you've paid lots of money for them.

Plus it's true, your parents may end up liking them if they see you wearing them. I know mine are always seeing them in the magazines where Japanese girls who are about my age but look like 5 yr old girls are wearing loli and they always say something like,"yeah, that's okay if you're 5... You'll look like a ***** dream." And although that really won't make much sense because I'll be 18 soon, I do little things to make the fashion look more sophistocated and less child-like. Like take the same outfit from the magazine, but cut out the bonnet and the curly pigtails. Maybe do a more elegant, age-neutral hair style etc. It's all in how you put the entire look together.

Thanks guys! Hopefully she'll be like most of your parents and when she finally sees me where something she'll like it a lot more.

And no thank goodness she's not going with me, I'm going for a term for school and I'm draging one of my friends to Harajuku so I can hopefully find the BtSSB store ^_^

Well, personally, my parents don't mind how I dress or what I like. They're fine with most everything. My mom isn't into Lolita herself but she understands why I'm drawn to it and why I appreciate it.

I don't view Lolita as a trend nor do I acknowledge its popularity or unpopularity; these aspects are frivolous. I love it because the fashion and lifestyle and overall concept just fit in so well with so many of my strongest standpoints and loves that I'm instantly attracted to it and find it to be a lovely way to express myself. My mother knows this and I've explained it to her in this way; she understands fullly.

My mother understands that I am not a trendy person. I don't go wild over what's the latest and greatest and I could care less about keeping up with all the trend updates. I know when I like a certain fashion instantly and why I like it. Sometimes, if there is something that's really "in" I may happen to like it but that's a rarity. I'm very particular about fashion and self-presentation and most trends don't cut it therefore most of my wardrobe is compiled of what I find favorable for me and not what the majority of popular society finds favorable for everyone. Lolita, vintage, retro, etc. Those tend to be more "me."

Maybe if you elaborated more on why you like it and why it is important to you instead of allowing her to simply pass it off as a spreading trend, she would have a change of heart. A lot of what the Lolita lifestyle represents are ideas that parents shouldn't be disappointed about at all, especially in the midst of a lot of amoral and inspid messages and lifestyle preferences that modern society exhaults.

Woah, they made another one? I must be behind times. I haven't even checked their new items yet. gonk

Oh well, I'd like to visit the first original store in Daikanyama, but that's just me. 3nodding

(and yes, I know they have one in Paris, but I wasn't informed of one in Harajuku. There should be one in Chicago! cry )

I don't know how long the Harajuku one has been there, but its pretty nice. It was quite reminiscent of the Baby shown in Shimotsuma Monogatari, but I don't know if thats the Daikanyama store or not.

From the shoplist on the site, it seems like they have quite a few stores set up. Hmmm...

I can't wait to go back! I ache for it now more than ever, it seems. Not Baby, really, but just all of Japan. haha.

I want to go to Japan, but we don't have the money to do many things with. My mom and dad are getting a divorce, and my mom's working 2 jobs, so I'll barely be able to see her much on weekdays. Plus, I'm planning to get a babysitting job to buy more clothes and things with, so I'm not worried too much.
