Reign fidgeted as she paced the spare classroom Nara had loaned to her for this. It seemed that Nara felt she should try teaching a younger scroll child, mostly as a test to see if the woman could bribe the chimp girl into teaching permanently, or so Reign believed. Nara hadn't seemed very thrilled about Reign's choice of job, more specifically the location she worked at.

Of course, Reign knew the student she was to be teaching. But the girl didn't really see Papina as a "younger" scroll child. After all, they had practically grown up together, though she hadn't seen Papina since she'd babysat Luna. Recalling that, Reign gave a bit of a frown. That kid was just weird. Anyways, Nara said that Papina needed a class on using her bow and just how perfect would it be for Reign, the ivy girl's friend, to help her out?

Reign scowled. She was really gonna get back at Nara for this. But later. She was at least true to her word, even if that word had been begged and pleaded out of her... Thus, the chimp girl waited for her friend. No, for today, Papina was her student.

Papina sighed before she poked her hooded head around yet another door frame. She had brought and worn her cloak since it was the most comfortable way to carry her two bows. After all, Nara said to bring her weapon, but she wasn't sure if that meant the one she started with, or the one she gained while rescuing Nara from the Templars. Therefore, she brought both.

A quick glance showed no sign of this room being her classroom either. Not that she really knew what her classroom looked like... Where's that teacher?!? She was about to withdraw from this room as well when she saw Reign. Eh, why not. She pulled her hood back as she entered the room. "Hey Reign. You here for a class too?" Was Reign going to be in the same class as her? At the very least, Reign should have a better clue as to what was going on.

Nope, nary a clue as to who her teacher was. Her instructions consisted of a command to bring her weapon, and directions to where the classroom should be at roughly.

Reign stopped her pacing as she heard something, or someone, at the door. The girl smiled as she saw her pupil, giving Papina a little wave. Though she was a bit confused when the ivy girl asked if she was here for a class as well. Darn you, Nara, for not explaining things...

"Uh, kinda. Nara asked me to teach a class..." She hesitated for a moment, then continued on. "So, I guess I'm supposed to teach you something..." Nara had been rather vague. Reign thought for a moment, then spotted the bows that Papina had brought along. "Ah, yeah. You've got those things, don't ya?" Not that it was much help, seeing how Reign didn't have the slightest idea how to shoot a bow other than you pulled the string back. Plus, she didn't have any targets.

"Uh..." She thought back to when she'd helped Ala learn a bit about fighting. Hand-to-hand was definitely her specialty. "Well, you know how to shoot those pretty well, I guess... Don't you? So, maybe you should learn a melee weapon, in case you get in a situation where you wouldn't be able to use a bow?"

Blinkblink. "Wait... Nara asked you to teach a class?" Papina started to get a sneaking suspicion on who her teacher was now. It wasn't long before that suspicion was confirmed. "You? Teach me? About my bow?" That didn't make much sense. Reign was much better with a dagger than a bow. "Yeah, I have a fairly good idea on how to shoot..." she said weakly, more than a little disappointed that she couldn't get more pointers on how to use her bow. Oiy. Wait. Learn a melee weapon? Her? "Erm... Well, I did see these rather cool-looking blades a while back. They looked like daggers whose handles were in the middle of a circle. Only reason I don't have them now is because my mom is certain I'd be so inept with them I'd cut myself trying to use them..." She sighed. "If I could convince my mom to get them for me, do you suppose you could teach me to use them?"
((*was trying to describe these* ;>> *except they'd be in a different color and with a different pattern, of course* ;^^))

Reign thought for a moment. "Well, I suppose I could, but then we'd have to do this later..." She'd much rather just get this over with now. "Nara did say there were some weapons around here somewhere, but I have no idea where they'd be. I brought my daggers... but if these are similar, then I'm sure you could use mine to learn. Then if you got them, you'd just have to figure out the differences, but that's not that hard, really."

"I do need to learn basics now before my mom would even consider getting me the daggers I wanted..." Papina admitted, blushing as the leaves on her head shrank back in embarrassment. "I wouldn't be able to flip them over my hands like I could with yours, but otherwise I should be able to do whatever fighting moves I learn with your set." Of course, she'd also have to show her mom that she could use daggers without hurting herself, so she'd either have to drag her mother or to Reign's to prove it, drag Reign over to her place, or simply borrow Reign's daggers for a bit.

In any case, she needed to learn how to use the daggers. Starting with... how to hold them properly. .-.;

"Okay, then." Reign fetched her normal set of daggers and pulled out two. "Daggers can be held in a few different ways, depending upon your fighting style. You can hold it sideways, with the blade facing away from your body or you can point the blade towards the enemy." She demonstrated each grip as she described it. "The easiest is just pointing the blade at your enemy. Holding the blade out requires more slashing across moves, while the other one just lets you jab or slash."

With that, she held out the pair of daggers to Papina. "Try a couple of practice swings with them to get accustomed to them. Then we'll do a little sparring match. They shouldn't hurt us too much. I haven't sharpened them recently." Well, too recently. With enough force, the blades could still do some damage, but if the girls were careful they shouldn't get more than perhaps a small nick or two. Learning to fight did have some disadvantages at times.

Papina eyed the daggers as Reign brought them over. She watched carefully as Reign demonstrated each grip before she took the daggers from Reign when offered. Wait... "Hold up. Not sharpened recently?" She eyed the edge of one of the daggers before taking a hair and running it along the blade, first lightly, then dragging it against the blade.

((Live steel for the first class! Whoot! <<; ... They seriously need to get something more along the lines of wooden daggers for Papina to use first... >w< Alarai's going to freak when Papina comes home. "What happened to you?! I thought you went to class! No more going anywhere alone for you missy! Someone might ambush you again!"))

Reign blushed a bit. "Yeah... I had to sharpen them when we went after Nara, but not since." Which meant that they were dull, just not as dull as one would prefer for learning on. While she waited for Papina to get accustomed to the weapon, Reign went and fetched the other pair from the box. She'd not equip her tail with a dagger. Too much confusion for her poor student.

((*giggles* Nara forgot to tell Reign where the practice weapons were?))

Papina mentally tallied up the days since that as the leaves on her head started to droop further and further as she started to figure out just how short a time that's been.

Especially since it generally takes awhile for steel to lose it's edge.

"Oiy..." Hopefully she could learn to dodge fast so she wouldn't come home with many cuts. It was that, or her mom would ban her from leaving the house on her own ever again. She gripped the daggers tightly, each hand using a different grip from the other. Perhaps Reign would start with basic attack and block moves? She eyed the daggers Reign fetched for herself with some misgivings.

((High! Middle! Low! *is so taking from the lessons during the Song of the Lioness and Protector of the Small series* <<; *and perhaps some from the Heralds series too* ;^^))

Reign could tell that Papina was nervous. Very, very nervous. "Ready?" She asked, giving the girl a bit of a warning before she slowly started to battle against the teen. A slow, fairly easy-to-block swing to start them off.
PostPosted: Sun Jul 22, 2007 10:47 pm

"Erm..." Papina didn't really have time to answer before Reign started to swing a dagger towards her. Her nearest arm leapt forward of its own accord and hit the held dagger against Reign's, keeping it from going any closer to her.

Okay. That wasn't so bad. Fairly easy to figure out. It wasn't like she hadn't watched Reign in action before or anything like that...

... Plus she had actually taken the time to go find some books to try and learn how to use daggers so she could show her mom she wasn't going to hurt herself trying to use those daggers she wanted so badly. It was just that the real thing seemed much scarier than what she had read about.

Yes, when actually faced with real pointed metal objects flying at you, it was a bit different than reading about it. But Reign kept a slow pace to let Papina get a bit more comfortable with blocking and perhaps even attacking a bit. Only when the ivy girl seemed comfortable with the pace would Reign speed it up some.

But for now, it was a few slow attacks, leaving some opportunity for Papina to attack if she wanted.

Papina slowly started to un-tense as Reign continued the slow pace. She was still at unease, but being able to go slow helped. She thought she caught a moment or two of opportunity where she could do something other than defending, but she stuck with defending only. Defending was one thing since Reign was good with daggers, thus with attacking, but Papina was likely to get them both hurt if she personally attempted to attack.

Reign kept the pace going for a while longer before moving it up just a notch. Perhaps Papina would slowly get to where she wouldn't worry and would just react. That was what fighting was about; reacting. Not thinking as much. Too much thinking confused you. Or so Reign believed.
