Vanyel, much to her distaste at the moment, was dressed in something that could only be defined as terrible. Kitten had clearly been drinking something that had long gone off because she had dragged Vanyel to some god-awful clothing store and had been stuffing her into the most horrific of outfits. For example, first there had been the frills and lace, and then there had been the plaid and stripes. Did Kitten have no fashion sense? The woman had never appeared to be colour blind (or at this point maybe even completely blind) but she seemed to be out-doing herself at the moment.
The outfit of the moment was, and get this, a green mini-skirt with white lace trim that tickled her thighs with a white button up collared shirt with long sleeves that also sported white lace frill on the cuffs. Knee-high black boots had been chucked onto the girl and her long hair had been pulled out of its braids to be pilled atop her head. Kitten thought she looked adorable, Vanyel thought completely otherwise and anyone could tell from the purse of her lips and the tears that were welling in her eyes.
"I'm giving you one minute to finish looking at me in this before it's on the ground, possibly in shreds," Vanyel said sweetly as she looked away from the mirror and up at Kitten.

Instead of being dragged to go shopping, the situation with Arius was completely vice versa. Once again he had dragged his hapless guardian along to go clothes shopping. Farlest had done nothing but go through the boy's dresser and announce that they would have to buy more clothes...sometime. Sometime did not mean fifteen minutes from that very moment.
Arius had somehow translated it as such however, and now the elf was eyeing with distaste some jeans that looked as though they had already been worn for a year by some over-active little boy the way they were faded and torn.
The crimson-eyed Scent however, pronounced them stylish, and was now pleading his case to the powers that be. In other words, he who held the wallet. "Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase?" He wheedled, those large eyes going impossibly wide and lower lip jutting out in a pout.
Farlest swallowed hard. He knew he was doomed.

Kitten turned to look in the direction of the over enthusiastic pleading voice of a small boy. She was likelt imagining it but it sounded rather familiar, though she certainly couldn't place when or where she might have heard a voice such as his. It seemed...distinctive. Shifting about the clothing rack and now ignoring Vanyel's glares the woman found the source of the voice and found the familiar face that fit the familiar voice. "I hope he's begging you to put those pants back," laughed Kitten as she took a step over to the pair.
The orange haired girl followed Kitten, not knowing that the path was leading towards people. She hadn't heard the boy and so she assumed Kitten had found another outfit to stuff her into. Needless to say, the girl was not pleased when she took the step out from behind the pants rack to come face to face with Farlest and Arius.
Pale cheeks were instantly red as strawberries at the sight of the two, but she didn't move. Dashing behind the pants rack would have been silly. She knew she looked rediculous in the outfit she was wearing at the moment but it would have been worse to hide she had decided and so she simply put her hands on her hips and grunted a soft hello.

Farlest pulled a face, grimacing. "I only wish that was the case." He said ruefully, before turning to smile at Kitten and her charge. "Instead he wants to be the height of fashion, I fear." The elf ruffled Ari's hair, to which the boy objected loudly, having just noticed that they had company.
Scooting out of his guardian's reach, Arius quickly forgot about the pants and instead darted over to give Vanyel an overenthusiastic hug. "Vanyel!!! You're getting new clothes too?" Pulling back, he beamed at the girl, looking at her current outfit. "Wow...your hair's different too, did your mommy do that?" Innocently he poked a finger at it, "That's pretty, makes you look older." He embellished the compliment with a wink.
The elf rolled his eyes, "You're out shopping too, I gather?" He inquired politely, turning his attention towards Kitten, letting the children settle their own affairs. It was just safer that way.

If that was high fashion then Kitten was quite glad to be out of the loop. They looked more like a dogs chew toy than pants that anyone should be wearing. And here Kitten though Arius was interested in being cute. "Well, we're sort of out shopping. I've a bit of an engagement with my job so to speak and I was hoping Vanyel would be there with me, but she needs a cute outfit to go in and she just seems to hate everything I pick out for her. Maybe Arius could help her find a good outfit, hmm?" she asked, turning to Arius with a smile. "Why not pick out Vanyel a cute, not too very expensive outfit. Doesn't that sound like fun?"
Vanyel thought she could have killed Kitten in that very instant. Let Arius dress her? That sounded really terrible. And why was he hugging her? How did he know her name? The girl simply stood there looking grumpy, still irritated about the clothes she was forced to be wearing. "Yes Kitten did it and no it's not pretty, she replied, crossing her arms over her chest with a sigh. If Kitten was going to let Arius pick out her outfit it would atleast look better than if Kitten herself picked it out. All she had to do was be pleasant to the boy for the next few minutes. That couldn't be too hard. Could it?

Farlest raised both brows, but didn't say anything to Kitten's suggestion. Not to be impolite, but he really wouldn't let Arius pick...he might turn her into any stereotype imaginable depending on how he felt, but then again, he might not, he could only cross his fingers and hope that his charge behaved himself. "I'm just shopping because Arius wears his clothes out almost as fast as I can put them on him...he's a very active little boy."
Arius blinked for a moment at Vanyel's words before shrugging, "Well...iffen you say so, I suppose." He showed her a cheerful smile regardless. "Let's go find something for you to wear then!" Turning that blinding grin on Kitten, he waved a hand, "Thank you, ma'am!" Before snatching Vanyel's hand and dragging her off to go find something to wear.
Once safely out of sight of their respective parental units, he exchanged a conspiratorial glance with the girl, "So ah...what do you like to wear?"

Kitten laughed softly and shook her head at the elf's words. "Vanyel, although not inactive, muchly prefers to be inside, curled up with one of her many books in her lap. It's crazy I tell you, between my two girls I don't know who likes books more!" The woman gave a bright smile to Arius as he thanked her and she gave him a nod and a wave as the two litle one's sped off and out of sight. Kitten almost felt sorry for Vanyel.
A squeak was all Vanyel could manage as the boy suddenly took her hand and tore the both of them off in the direction opposite from the adults, her hair falling out of the messily made bun to fall in crimped waves to just below her shoulder. Having her hair in braids almost constatly made Vanyel's hair crimped and fluffy when it was out of it's bonds.
The girl's cheeks grew pink at the question before she managed quietly, "I like to wear comfortable stuff that's too big for me...but I wish I could wear something that made me look more attractive I guess. I don't really have the body for it though. Maybe when I grow up I'll manage to look at least a little cute." Vanyel laughed, mostly to herself, as she turned and started inspecting a shirt of a rather ugly shade of orange.
"What do you like to wear?"

Farlest tapped his lips thoughtfully, "Mmm...Ari likes a good book once in a while, but he'd rather be hob-nobbing with people. " The elf grinned sheepishly, "I'm afraid he's rather like me in that respect, though I enjoy a good read, I'm a social creature." There was a slight pause, "Oh...you have another little girl?~ A scent or otherwise?"
Arius nodded slowly, "Well...obviously your mum doesn't want you to wear something that's too big for you, but...I bet we could find something comfortable and cute as well." He was trying to be helpful, really he was...girls tended to bring that out moreso than boys.
"I like to wear just about anything, but it depends on the occasion, really. I'll wear like...jeans and a t-shirt for playing, but I like dark colors, and my dad says they look good on me. I'd stay in my pajamas if my daddy let me, if we didn't have to leave the house anyway."

Kitten shook her head and the long, curly blue hair she was sporting bobbed playfully against her cheeks and shoulders. "No, actually, it's quite a bit different from my little scent-baby actually, but I'm not at complete liberty to say anything about it. Likely you've never heard of the place. It started out as me getting a job as a scientist - but you know how things can sort of change without warning." Reaching up, Kitten bashfully tucked her hair back behind her ear. Although she wasn't what she called reclusive, Kitten had never been very good at talking for long periods of time with people, it made her nervous and shy the longer she was with others. This even more the case when the other was so very good looking. "I'm a total bookworm myself. Too into my stories to figure out fact from fiction - that type. I wish I was more social though," she murmurred, trailing off slightly and moving her gaze else-where.
Vanyel gave a slight shiver at the mention of pajamas. She actually hated the things. "I don't wear pajamas. Ever," she said with a bit of finality in her tone. Not that she was being mean about it, but she was all too used to people piping up with something or other about how awesome pajamas were and how she'd love them if she just gave them a chance. Pass. Vanyel either slept in her clothes of the day (her favorite option) or she slept in her undies.
"It can't be too expensive, like Kitten said. And I want it to be black." The girl's orange eyes seemed to sparkle as she thought about a cute black outfit on her. She though the muted colour would make her orange hair and eyes simply pop with their vibrance. Of course the girl was right, Vanyel always looked good in anything simple and black.

He nodded, "Ah, well I suppose that makes sense, and yes..." a vaguely sad smile crossed his lips, "We never know when our lives can change without warning, I fear...for good or ill." It would be so nice to be able to predict such things...to be able to counter those which one did not desire...perhaps then, well, he would still have Ka'hmesh.
Laughing softly at her next words, the elf grinned disarmingly, "I know the power of a good book...can spirit you right away from reality. Not being an utter socialite isn't a bad thing, it's just another sort of personality." His expression grew vaguely wistful, remembering...yes, some of his best friends...and loves as well, had been like that. He filling up their silences.
Ari shrugged, not seeming to wish to convince her of the wonders of pajamas, "I just find them comfy, I guess they aren't for everybody. If'm real tired sometimes I forget to take my clothes off entirely, then dad gets ticked at me."
The boy put a finger to his lips, an unconscious mimicry of one of his guardian's habits. "Black would be very pretty..." Immediately he went to searching, glancing at clothes, then back at Vanyel more than once. "So do you think a skirt is th'sort of thing she wants?"

She noticed the sadness in the way he smiled and the way he sort of unfocused at the end of his words, but she wasn't going to ask or comment. It really wasn't Kitten's place to go poking her nose into the business of others, especially when she was quite sure she wouldn't even be able to manage getting the words out properly anyway. "Being a socialite or not isn't exactly a bad thing, no, that's not what I meant...but surely it's easier for one, such as yourself, to be outgoing and open with someone." Kitten felt only bold enough to say so little, but the man was easier to talk to than most at least.
Really, the changeling didn't do well at all around handsome men. Right now she was thankful her hair wasn't vibrating with every colour of the rainbow. Perhaps it was their connection with their scent-babies that allowed the woman to continue talking without a stammer, but whatever the reason, she was thankful. "So how did Arius happen for you? I swear, I thought Vanyel was a bloody little thief for the whole day. She kept saying 'this is my home, this is my home,' but I tell ya, I didn't believe her at all!"
"Why does he get mad at you? Kitten only gets mad if I fall asleep in clothes that are really dirty, you know? But I don't play in the mud or nothing so I don't really get dirty all that often." The girl pulled a black, slinky dress from the rack that looked like it would only cover a fourth of a full grown woman - but since it was in the women's section it was clearly made for a curvy figure.
At Arius' comment, Vanyel's cheeks blushed a slight pink, but she didn't voice any comment in return, she simply shrugged her shoulders. "Yea, it has to be a skirt or a dress. The place we're going says I'm not allowed to wear pants." The girl was suddenly very aware of the terrible outfit she was in and with a grumble she took the nearest outfit that didn't look terrible and went to throw it on in the changing room, leaving Arius behind without a word.

He nodded quickly at that, "I didn't think that you thought it was bad, but...yes...yes it is, very easy for me to be open with people, sometimes I'm rather afraid I let them know too much too fast." His look was sheepish and mildly apologetic.
Farlest laughed at her description, "She probably was as shaken up as you were, appearing as she did. Arius quite literally appeared in front of my eyes, and announced that I was his parent...it was quite...startling, but in truth, I...well I needed him, I'd been going through something of a depression, and it's very hard to be sad around Ari." The elf smiled fondly at that particular thought, "I rather like being a parent. So I guess you've adjusted well enough to having her around, yes?"
Ari shrugged, "I dunno...I guess he has some odd notion it isn't good for me." The boy wrinkled his nose at the dress, wondering at grown-up clothes for a minute...how did they manage it.
"No pants? Sheesh..." For a moment, he was terribly glad that he wasn't a girl, being a boy seemed to be a lot more fun. Pulling something from the rack, he turned just in time to notice her running off to change. Oh...well...following her just as far as the door, he leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. He'd wait, and see what she thought of what he'd picked out.

Kitten laughed with a shake of her head, but as she did those blue locks re-coloured themselves, fading from root to tip into what looked like the colours of the sunset. The top of her head was now a bright red, which melted into an orange to rival Vanyel's and then yellow at the tips. Thankfully the woman didn't notice, otherwise she'd have been thrown into a terrible fit of complete embarrassement. "I didn't see anything happen, I'd been out shopping and when I came back I found the little imp. She's been...well...I guess I don't really know what to say about her. I didn't need anyone, as I'm sorry that you did, though glad you've found little Arius, and though I didn't want any children, I certainly didn't want to be rid of her. I suppose she fills a whole that I didn't even know I had. I'd miss her if she was gone, but if I didn't have her now I don't think I'd be any worse off."
The woman chewed on her lower lip nervously. She was sounding like she hadn't wanted Vanyel at all. God, she sounded like a terrible parent! How could she sit there talking like that when she knew how very attatched to her scent-baby she was. "Adjusting is certainly a very good term," she murmurred with a distant look, clearly lost in her own torrid thoughts about herself and Vanyel.
Vanyel came out of the door in something that looked like a pillow-case, but she didn't care because it was better than the gawdy thing Kitten had shoved her into. Sometimes the girl wondered if Kitten had any fashion sense at all or if she was really only trying to torture the poor scent.
"Pants are wonderful," she agreed dreamily. Pants allowed for a great deal of flexibility on her behalf. When she was reading the girl could be found in any number of positions, many of them unsuitable for skirts. "But still, I think one day I want to wear skirts. Definitally mini skirts. I'd have to have really good legs for something like that though, wouldn't I?" Vanyel looked at what he had to offer, holding out a hand to inspect it with her own eyes.

Farlest raised brows at that color-shift, but supposed that it was accidental, and thus, didn't say anything. Being an empath had his little quirks, and he could tell that she was easily set off, embarrassed quite quickly, a grand contrast to Far's own personality. He had the potential to be utterly shameless, not that he usually did anything inappropriate. In public, that is.
Quietly he listened as she talked, understanding what she meant despite her fears. "You care a lot about her, don't you?" He finally asked quietly, seeming to understand somehow.
What Ari was offering was a primarily black outfit, touched with a hint of lace at sleeves and collar. The skirt was simplistic, but stylish, and wouldn't even go down as far as the girl's knees, the shirt had three-quarter length sleeves, and was the sort that had to be pressed off after washing, buttoning up the front, where another hint of dark lace peeked, and complete with a neatly folded collar. "Here, try this. And I think you'd look gooooooooorgeous in a miniskirt." He said honestly, thinking that there was nothing at all wrong with Vanyel's legs.

Kitten, with people she was familiar with and with people who weren't so very good-looking, was quite an outgoing, fun-loving typoe of person...when people dragged her out of her house and away from her books. She had a love of taking risks that seem small when she sets out on them but always seem to loom much larger when she looks back on her past. The woman's cheeks flushed like her daughters at the other's words and she gave a smile and a nod. "More than I think she'll ever understand. She likes to think herself independant and finds me less a mother than just someone there taking care of her. I think she's blocked by the fact that we aren't actually related by any means, I guess it hurts a little when she calls me Kitten instead of mom, but I can't force her." Her strong little girl, too mature in too many ways but still vulnerable in others.
Vanyel quite disliked lace, but the outfit looked cute enough and a quick glance at the price tag told her that it wouldn't be a horrible thing to take back to Kitten. She'd need good shoes to match it, but that wouldn't really be a problem. "You think so?" she asked the boy absently as she slipped back into the changing room and wriggled out of the other outfit. "I think you'd look good in a suit...a pin-stripe suit to be most precise."
Pushing open the door, the orange scented child posed playfully for Arius in the outfit he'd picked out for her. She wasn't fond of the way the collar enclosed her, but that was simply because of how she was so used to the wide-open freedom of her usual baggy sweater. "Well?"
