Some martial arts primarily use punches. Some focus on kicks. Others rely on grappling, chokes, holds throws, etc, etc.

But there has to be one part of the body that is the 'centre', that enables good execution of technique in all of these martial arts. It doesn't matter if you include or exclude the 'martial sports' in the equation this time.

(for the discussion's sake, let's exclude the brain, or 'mind' in this case; we all know that strategy, memory, and all other tactics use the brain)

Last night was my second Chen-style Tai Chi class, and...well...my legs felt like lead afterwards...and I wasn't even doing the stances as wide as it should properly be. I was sweating, breathing a little bit hard and damned hot despite the heater already been turned off. sweatdrop

For me its the Abdominals. The abs is the center or the core of the body. Strengthen this part of your body then you can do powerfull punches, powerfull kicks as well as good groundfighting and grappling skills. biggrin

The most important is the totality. The entirety.
If you miss an arm, you compensate. Again, totality is what matters here.

On second thought, the reproductive organs are the most important.
Think about it.
Nobody cares if you lose or you become cripple. As long as you can have kids, so your kid can beat up your enemy's kid when he's older. XD

That's the key sentence there. My question is just that: which part of the body should be strong? What gives you the foundation to build your skills on?

I would say around the abs as well, the "hara" *though I have no idea whether that's spelled correctly.) The center of balance is very important to maintain. I think it's the one "part" that cannot be compensated.

Of course, losing your pinkie toe also destroys your balance. Gives you something to think about ne?

True, but people without legs have the disadvantage of having to walk on their crotch.
The crotch is essential to martial arts, but it cannot be a surrogate for our center of movement. Most of the time.

Let me rephrase.

Losing your pinkie toe would mean you have to learn how to walk all over again. We depend on them more for balance than we realize.

Why I know this as a fact? A family friend had their pinkie toes surgically removed because of a diabetic condition.

Any part of the body huh? Hm, thats a easy one. THE BRAIN! anyone can learn to use there arms, legs, torso...etc etc in a fight, but how are they learning it? they're using their brain.
