So, I'm sure you've all noticed that in the anime world, musical animes have shown up, and the English dubbing companies are taking the near-death chance of dubbing those shows. They're doing their best to pimp them out at conventions, but still, these series don't seem to be too well known.
Although technically, they're not all actual MUSICALS, setting aside the wonderful Nerima Daikon Brothers, but shows like BECK aren't musicals, but feature singing numbers in them. O: Those latter shows still count in this discussion, though. xD
DISCUSS. Musical animes. Why do anime fans dislike them? Is it the English singing, or do they just not like musicals period? Do you like musicals? How are the companies doing?

I haven't seen Beck or any musical anime as of yet... I'd guess that people haven't adjusted to this level of dubbing. But you gotta hand it to voice actors for not only acting like a character in these shows but singing in that character's voice.
Hmm well I may have seen one sorta "musical anime", Kodocha. Laura Bailey has a "Sana" rap or ballad in almost every episode of Kodocha, which she pulls off with flying colors. Occasionally other characters sing as well, they're not long songs though, no more than 30 seconds.
From a commentary of Kodocha with Laura and Jerry Jewel, Laura explains that with translating a Japanese song for an anime, you either go with flaps or go with rhythm, if you go with flaps, it's harder to get all the words in, if you go with rhythm, picky people will start going "ZOMGTEHFLAPSOFTHEMOUTHSRNOTRIGHT" (<- ok thats my version of saying it) but in terms of a Christmas song in Kodocha, they went with rhythm and the song sounded fine imo. Sooo I dunno how other companies are handling that right now.
Btw I like musicals smile

I've seen a few episodes of the Nerima Daikon Brothers anime. I think it's really cool how they managed to make the songs work in English, and still make them hilarious.
At Anime Boston, they had a panel just for Beck. Mike McFarland talked about how he would work for hours upon hours reworking the translations so that they rhymed, or so the ending word ended with the same vowel sound... even if you don't like the dubbed version, you have to have at least a little bit of respect for the fact that they put that much effort into it.

I love Laura's voice. She did the songs in Fruits Basket as well, which was what I believe to be one of the first successful animes with English-translation songs. My friend has Kodocha...so now I definitely need to watch it. 8D
I bought the Beck artbox with DVD one, but I haven't watched it yet because I'm waiting to watch it with a friend...but it's killing me. xD
Calica - Definitely. And all of the singers are doing a really good job, too. But asking for respect from anti-dub fans is more a fruitless battle than anything, I'm afraid. ):

Hikarulol I can't remember the name of that one musical anime that was made by the same people who make Excel saga. Nerima Daikon Brothers, I think. @D Technolife: I agree. But a lot of the hard core anti-dub fans are generally young and immature, at least the ones I've seen. They just need to grow up and open their minds a little, and maybe start exposing themselves to dubs other than what's on cable TV. edit: And the Beck dub is AMAZING. I got chills at the end of episode 5 when Koyuki and Maho are singing. I don't care what anyone says, Greg Ayres is an amazing vocalist.

Calica Uwaaahhh...Greg Ayres sneaked clips from the first disc when he came to Naka-Kon this past year, so I think I'm just going to watch it and tell my friend I haven't. ><
I just can't take it anymore! I've been waiting so long for this dub. XD;;

I'm not a big fan of musicals, english, japanese, spanish, I just don't like them all that much.
But I've heard so many good things about Beck, maybe I'll give that one a try ^_^

I just threw it into the category because they sing in it.
It's all about a band trying to make it big.
I went to my friend's house and we all watched the first DVD. Greg Ayres was just...brilliant. @__@ I loved every minute of it. xDD

Add The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya to this list, because Wendee Lee has confirmed that she will be singing "God Knows" and "Lost My Music" in volume 4 of the series. 8DDD

I wish they would release a OST though. EDIT: People should listen to the ending theme. It has a huge point.
