So that's why I feel I'm going to get turned down for my first work interview. I have a group interview with Primark. And I'm so nervous.
Its my favourite store, first job. I desperately want to work and especially there.
I heard of a store in America, Abercrombie and something, where you have to be under a certain weight to work there.
I'm a UK 16, I think that's a US 14.
But has anyone ever not got a job due to their size?

abercrombie and fitch? haha god that store is just ludicrous in their pricing. its supposed to be a sophisticad so cal beach vibe but sucks miserably. and their sister store Hollister is just as stupid as well. who in their right mind buys a pair of jeans for 40$ already ripped and faded? even the hats are ripped...i dont get it...i can do it myself. neutral
luckily i havent been declined of a job due to my size, it was mainly due to my inexperience in certain areas. apparently though, big guys get alot of work heavy lifting...i guess its the old size=strength idea some people have.
the only bad part with retail stores is that they want employees to basically model their store (which is why you rarely see skinnier girls in a torrid and never see normal to large sized girls in an AnF.) well its not bad, but it sometimes isnt a good thing if you dont have the personality to match up and surpass the "short comings" they look for. it truely is discrimination but they cant get called on it because they subtely work their way around it.
i hope your job interview goes well. my first was at Best Buy in their Media (movies, music, games) department. it was fun. blasting good music all the time, playing games in order to "teach" people. and informing parents about things that they should know about. (ie: in reality, the ratings on games are the strictest and most clear and concise rating system so far. and what now and here there.)

If you feel you're going to get turned down for your first work interview, you most likely will because you won't go in there trying your best and shining your brightest because you've already decided the outcome.
I know you have a great personality, and if you're interested in working and willing to work hard and do what's expected of you, they'd be foolish not to hire you.
Now, I have worked a group hire before and nobody in the process ever said "Eww, that kids fat, we don't want to hire them"... albeit mine wasn't for a clothing store. But group hires usually mean that it's a less in-depth interview, they pick at everything you say, but they are desperate for employees and they'll hire more than they might need in order to fire them. So the possibility of you getting this job is very good from what I know of group hires. We rated people on appearance, people who dressed sloppily were rated lower... you didn't have to dress in a suit and tie... but if you obviously didn't care about your appearance and didn't dress professional, we didn't want you. We rated on comfort with speaking in a crowd as our job requires a lot of interaction with customers, as yours would--being one of the first to stand up and speak and do your interview is always a good thing. I saw one girl who was very confident, and I was impressed... I wanted to hire her but her talk was much about "I don't trust others to do the job, so I do everything myself" I'm like that, so that's why I was enthused but she was shot down for not being enough of a team player... so yeah, don't go in bursting with confidence that you don't need anybody... but go in there realizing you have every right to work the job (if it's your favorite store, I assume you can fit in the clothes and honestly... you aren't that big (I'm much bigger, so that's why I won't apply at most stores 'cause they don't have my size in the clothes)... if you can wear their clothes you have every right to be there, recognize that!) Let them know you'll be a hard worker, that you're good with people, that you take pride in your appearance, and that you're a team player... don't let your size be a factor, because it probably isn't.
I tried looking up the store, and honestly I don't think it's anything like Abercrombie and Fitch... which would most definately not carry clothes in any size bigger than a 10. It's more like a Sears or a Macy's, which do hire plus sized people.
When I've gone to interviews, I was nervous about my appearance hindering me but I didn't let it rule me, I dressed up and primped and went in knowing I had every right to have that job... and by the end I'd talk myself back into realizing my size had nothing to do with my compitence... my problem both times was that they didn't have enough hours for me to quit my current job at the time (although now I'm so disgusted with my job I would quit) so I would have had to work two jobs and they didn't want to be a second job... I've since been told by a manager never to say I plan to keep my job or bring it up, it's none of their business.
So don't let your size get you, don't see it as an issue and I promise you they won't.

I have never not gotten a job because of my size.. but, I've also never tried getting a job in a store. If I think my size would prevent me from doing something or make it harder for me to do a job, I won't go for it.
If you get turned down for a job because of your size when you know you could do the job fine-no problem, then it's probably a crap place to work anyway.
I know you're not in the US, but I'm pretty sure they have laws against that here(as long as you are physically capable and all that, despite the size). Probably would have something similar there. Of course, I'm sure you'd have to prove it.
But you have nothing to worry about! You're not very big. I'm positive you won't have a problem when it comes to that. You must be very nervous, it being your first work interview and everything. The first job is always the hardest one to get. Try and be confident about the whole thing though. It helps.

Thanks all. I feel so much better. It's for a weekend job and the new store is 3 floors and the biggest in the north west of england when it opens. Im not sure if this is smart enough.

I think what you want to wear is good. My brother took a job interview class and let me in on some tips when I started going for interviews.
-Dress how you would for the job, but a step up. -Ask questions. -Smile and be friendly! -I don't know if this applies for stores aswell.. but act like you plan on staying with them for a while. Like, if they ask what your plans are in the future you should act like you want to move up with them, manager or higher one day or something.
But don't go with me on this because again, I've never ever been interviewed for a store job. I have a feeling it's a bit different. I've also never done a group interview which is probably even more different.

XXX Zombie Porn Thanks all. I feel so much better. It's for a weekend job and the new store is 3 floors and the biggest in the north west of england when it opens. Im not sure if this is smart enough. I would personally go with the pinstripe pants, but I'm a lover of pinstripe. Full pants just seem more professional to me xp
But there's really nothing wrong with what you want to wear, it sounds nice.

It's actually been the opposite. People see me and assume I'm a Behemoth with the strength of an entire army! eek So I get worked like a dog, more than the "dainty" girls and more like a man would. Which really didn't suck at first. I went from 279 to 255 in the process. (but then after lack of jobs went WAY up to where I am now....315.5) What happened was that they decided to give me shitty hours. I guess mainly because they didn't think I had a life. They went against union code to do so. Like...I'd work closing time on thursday. That's 8 to midnight. THEN I'd have to COME BACK that friday morning @ 6 to 10. Soooo yeah. That's when it started getting really ******** up and I decided I was damn tired of it. I say, still go to the interview and try not to let that bother you. If they do decide that's a factor, ******** them. You're far TOO GOOD for a job like that anyway. What some people do not realize is that with some larger folk, our capacity to work is far greater than that of our smaller counterparts. It's like a shock. They look first, judge first, and usually or never find out the truth later. But as an "equal opportunity" employer, they need to judge you on your ability to do the job mentally first. And THEN test your physical ability.

I had friends that worked at Hollister... and Abercrombie. When they were hiring and I was looking for a job, they told me that I should come work with them. I just laughed in their faces. rofl I dont shop there, wouldn't and can't wear their clothes... what a great salesperson I would be! "Hi, I think this is really tacky and small.. but you could wear it!"
I've never been denied a job because of my size, that I know of. You just have to let people know how intelligent and hard-working you are, and then you will stand out. I believe in you! heart

My mom was a manager at a store and she said the best ting to do when you're interviewing to get a job, is at the end of the interview, look the person straight in the eye, and shake their hand. And say thank you. It's very professional.

I applied at a bakery, and I was not hired. My friend who is also chubby applied and was never hired. Our skinny friend applied and was hired. There are no "big" people at this bakery. I am experienced with customers and such, and it is their loss not for hiring me. Also I wouldn't want to work with someone who doesn't like "big" people working at their store. Like common, I wouldn't eat all the damn pastries!

I think we should make a store that hires only cute chubby girls and boys. And then we have to put them in cute little uniforms. It has to be a dessert or sweet thing too. scream

Someone said something about a bakery.
My friend works in one and she's fat and the other girl's would bully her. When they went for lunch they'd say, 'we want some pies left to sell when we get back so don't eat them.'
The secret shopper was in at the time once and they got fired on the spot razz

When they went for lunch they'd say, 'we want some pies left to sell when we get back so don't eat them.' The secret shopper was in at the time once and they got fired on the spot razz My co-workers would tell me I wasn't that fat... I was like "Uhh, hello? I can see myself, I am." They wouldn't believe me when I said it was alright.
But I just got fired, and I somewhat suspect that because I wasn't some cute little tiny thing the manager decided to pick on me from the moment he got there... The fact that I wasn't intimidated by him and would ignore what he said when he was being stupid didn't help my case I'm sure, but I just know that man had it out to get me... and I do as much work as the other girl supervisor and he actually went up to her and told her she was "too important to lose" I hadn't gotten praise from the management in a long time, but she would have air pumped up her butt when I did better work than her.
Luckily, once I get over the hurt of putting 3 years in that god-forsaken place I'll be happier than ever.
And when I find another job it'll be even better. I dread applying at places 'cause I want to work at a clothing store but none of the local stores sell anything big enough for me to wear, so why the hell would I work there? crying
