Sonata Arctica was born in 1996 on the edge of the world, in the northern Finnish town of Kemi. The very first incarnation of the band was named Tricky Beans. As Tricky Beans, the group produced three demos (Friend till the End, Agre Pamppers and PeaceMaker) and played twice in Jyrki Sähkösirkus, a live tour version of a then famous TV pop show. Where? Sorry dude, they have some progressive elements, like the guitar/keyboards dual solos, but they aren't a progressive band as it is.

Myspace lies. They called Tristania black metal, progessive metal, classical metal (symphonic metal), and I think heavy metal. While they might have some elements of these other genres, they are a gothic metal band. Sonata Arctica has progressive elements, but they are more power metal than anything. These guys are good for a song or two (like Lacuna Coil), but I can't listen to them for a long time. San Sebastian, Fullmoon, and Shy are their bes songs IMO.

I agree with the Power Metalness of them lol
Although, I do think the guitarist & keyboard player try to add Progressive elements, especially during the solos.

Their new album is very very very progressive. Ok except a few songs. Most of their older stuff is Power. I LOVE THIS BAND! They are my top favorite band...er tied with Kamelot. But still...I also get to see them beginning of February. I love Tony's vocals.

Dragon Bleed These guys are good for a song or two (like Lacuna Coil), but I can't listen to them for a long time. San Sebastian, Fullmoon, and Shy are their bes songs IMO. I totally agree with this statement, though I'd change the songs to San Sebastian, Wolf and Raven, Don't Say a Word, My Land (or something like this) and Victoria's Secret.
And I had no idea that they came from Kemi, it's quite up North in Finland. =o
EDIT - I'd like to know who dresses Tony Kakko, 'cause he wears some butt-ugly clothes. I saw SA at Tuska the other year and he wore like a red lumberjack shirt with a mesh net top under it. With some knee-length camo pants. I mean WTF?

These guys are fantastic!! I saw them live a couple of years back during their Reckoning Night tour in Southern California. They were awesome!!! I own every song that they've ever made or covered. My favorite album has got to be Reckoning Night, then next in line is Silence, then Winterheart's Guild, then Epica. I'm not even going to put Unia on the list because in my views, they changed a lot of their style in a bad way... My favorite songs are San Sebastian, Wolf and Raven, Don't Say a Word, The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me, The Gun (I'm not sure if this is a cover or not.. I didn't think so, but it's not on any albums...), Wildfire (I freakin' love this song), Black Sheep, Silver Tongue, Tallulah (it's a damn good ballad. And on youtube, someone sped up the recording by 30% or something like that, and it sounded good! You guys should try to find it), uhh.. what else... OH! I can't forget Mary-Lou. The slow and fast versions are really good. I really liked their cover of Die With Your Boots On by Iron Maiden, and their cover of Still Loving You by Scorpions. They kind of messed up Fade to Black my Metallica because they played it too fast. Anyways... Sonata Arctica gets the swordsman's approval with 2 thumbs up.
