A simple discsussion thread - what made you take to the steampunk 'subculture - or how did you become interested in steampunk? (i.e. the origins, not just what makes you them now)
I came to be of the subculture not so much be accident, but completely oblivious to my doing so. I have long liked much of the victorian age, such as fasion. I also much like goggles (he-he). The steam power particularly always held something of a fascination to me (perhaps because of visits to old steam engines and train museums with my Grandad when i was younger), especially when made todo all the crazy stuff Steampunk is famous for. But there is something different about steam-engines that other things, such as electronic devices. If one was to be pretentious, one might describe them as 'alive' in their workings. Also, of course, I love all of science fiction - but particular that akin to Jules Verne, or books containing numerous airships of ginat steam-powered spiders. wink As an added bonus, I also like the style of music of Abney Park etc.
And one day, I was looking for steampunk books etc., and stopped by the wikipedia article - noting the section regarding steampunk as a subculture - and found (by some fluke of chance, or whatever) I seemed to fit everything described there already! Huzzah! Most odd, but who am I to argue? I like it! biggrin

While I've long harbored a love of Oscar Wilde and similar period writers, I hadn't known of steampunk until quite recently, though I have collected tarnished gears for some time. (Now I have projects to incorporate them into!)
At the convention Anime North, I came across a booth (which I've pimped in the Fashion section) selling top hats, tailcoats, and dresses- most themed with Alice in Wonderland or similar sources, cards and clocks and feathers. I saw one hat which I absolutely fell in love with, and luckily for me, my fiance got it for me for my birthday, and for the next few months of his rent, got me a tail coat (Puss in Boots-themed) to match it. As I tried on the coat with the hat, the gorgeous owner of the booth turned to me and grinned, saying, "You've been steampunked!"
I went home and looked up the term, and have been adding to my wardrobe and vocabulary since.

I'm not really Steampunk per say, but I'm very interested in the sub-culture. I was just surfing around Gaia when I discovered it.

I have always had a certain fondness for something that I could never really find a name for... Alchemists, goggles, and England especially. I adored the His Dark Materials Trilogy, and looked for more things, but lacking a name I didn't find anything. . . Then, I forget exactly how, I stumbled into Steampunk.. And I ran a search for topics tagged with Steampunk, and ran into a post that Vanghar had made about possibly starting this guild, so I went to it... And yes. I'm still a newbie >3>

I was more of endeavoring toward the art of anachronism. Especially, the Jazz age recently, and I just like the idea of mixing the best of both worlds so to say. I was researching a bit about anachronistic culture, when I found out about steampunk rather by accident. I was merely looking at some beautiful steampunk contraptions, and then merely found out how they were categorized. I thought the idea was quite fascinating and decided to do a bit more research into it, and found this guild.

I am a goth, I have long since come to grips with that, and I quite enjo it. Victorian fashion is pretty big in my scene, and a love of all things Victorian has grown in me for quite awhile, so when I learned of steampunk, I loved the sense of adventure involved with the stories, so here I am, a steamgoth.

I- I just love airships. I can't help it. I'm drawn to them with-out any hesitation. I was linked to a gallery of dozens of old photos of airships, and literally turned them all into a rotating background for my desktop. I've dreamt of flying in the great dirigibles, and can't help but melt when I see art of them (shae-o-mah, have you seen the ads for The Golden Compass?). Airships are what do it for me, part and parcel. From there it just grew into a love of things of that era, and just kinda fell into a love of the anachronistic steam-things. I've really a love for the 1920's American culture (nya, shee?) and adore this idea called "Steam Noir" which is like Raymond Chandler gone wonderfully, brilliantly, delightfully /MAD/. It's not really strict "Steam Punk" but many people group all the anachronistic turn of the century fictions as such, So I guess it counts. And I love straight steam punk, too smile
But, yes... Airships... Ahhh...

Warmachine and Iron Kingdoms. Giant robots? In a fantasy setting?!?! Hell yes! After that I discovered Escaflowne and I've always liked things that are a little esoteric so I was hooked. I branced out in to Jules Verne (altho he gets a little too much into the technicalities of things), Wells, His Dark Materials and anything else I can get my hands on.

It was the works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells that first got me into Steampunk. Soon after I played Final Fantasy VI (FF3 on the SNES). Then one thing led to another and I was picking up any Steampunk related RPG settings or modules I could find (Gurps, Deadlands, Space 1889 and Sorcery & Steam) then movies and comics such as Wild Wild West and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
I'm designing my own Steampunk campaign for Dungeons & Dragons called Crystalis.
There are also a couple excellent Steampunk anime. Steamboy and The Secret of Blue Water (aka Nadia of the Mysterious Seas).

I was recently introduced, actually, and I fell in love with it. smile
I completely idolize Oscar Wilde, and the discovery of his works (and his existence, actually[!]) has changed me as a person. Because of him, I've become somewhat of a New Age Aesthete! xd I've always had a fascination for all things foreign, antique, complex, ethereal, avant-garde, etc. I love Victorian-era clothing and Marie Antoinette (probably another one of my idols sweatdrop ). Etc. etc. I think I'd be a little redundant if I keep listing the things I love. o 3 o;

Well... I have a deep love for history and the Victorian era is one of my secret obsessions. The Imperialism and the technology that was used then. I like the idea of a fantasy slash sci fi that uses both. Steam Noir is my other liking too. I enjoy things like this...
I like the fashions and the technology is fun. But there's also the factor of the possibility of Magic and the Airships. I like it that in steampunk that Airships have been more evolved than our derigbles that we had early in the twentieth century. The possibilty of Air Navies are fascinating to me.
Also I'd have to say that FFIII really influenced me. I've always found most steampunk to have a darker twist than the other types of fantasy genres. That makes it fun I suppose. I like dark things like that...
I could probably go on for much longer but I don't want to rant. I've been waiting for a steampunk guild to open up for years and this place is my dream come true. I can't wait to do some RP.

Well, I've always been a mad scientist at heart. Getting in trouble for stealing parts from things around the house in order to make little mechanizms that never actually work. My mom jokes that I have gears in my head instead of brains and they're all rusty. I gained an appreciation for steampunk when I played Arcanum: Steamworks of Magic Obscura. I simply loved the quirky gadgets your character could make to help them out through the game. It fueled my own desired to become the next Rube Goldberg. None of my ideas have ever worked, so I suppose I fit the mad part a little better than the scientist. Steampunk is the only subculture that thinks being a screw-up inventor is actually kind of cool.
