Shifting the child in his arms over to his other hip, Devon grunted with the effort, his swift passage through the park brought to a halt by the weight. "Geez, Nacho," he muttered under his breath, "you're really packin' on the pounds there. What're people feeding you when I'm not looking?"
Ignacio tilted his head and stared up at his ill-chosen father figure and blew an eloquent spit bubble. Then, as if to reinforce his point, he clapped his hands and laughed. Devon rolled his eyes. "This you sayin' I should get a stroller?" The child did not answer - frankly, Devon would have fainted if he had - and simply reached for the chain around the young man's neck. "Uh uh. You're not stranglin' me again." With a few quick strides, Devon made it to a clearing of grass and deposited his burden on the lush greeness before the child could get a firm hold of the chain holding his cross and St. Christopher's medal. Last time he had done that, Devon had sworn he saw the last few moments of his life flash; the kid was ridiculously strong and quick.
Not the least put off by his relocation, Ignacio promptly flopped forward on his stomach and began chewing on grass. Devon covered his face and sank downwards to sit beside him. He had no idea if the grass would hurt Ignacio or not but, judging by the other dozens of weird things the kid had swallowed, he had a cast iron stomach so probably not. "You're gonna give me heart failure," he sighed. "Maybe I should call up that Shiori and you can play with her kid for a while. Give her a heart attack for a change."
Ignacio made a noise that sounded as if he agreed. Then he pushed himself up into a sitting position and calmly began nibbling at a dandelion.

Nearby, Zack was perched in a fairly low tree branch. A loud rock band was blasting through his head phones and yet, the black-haired man was sound asleep. He wouldn't wake up to people's chatter, birds chirpping or even sounds from the street. Someone would have to touch him...or pull on his clothes or something of the like to get his attention. Or maybe they'd get lucky and he'd fall out of the tree.
Down below, a small blue unicorn child was playing in the grass, a small stuffed horse in her lap. She was happily -no, contently- braiding grass together, three strands at a time. Where she learned, who knew, but she wasn't half bad. She was working on her fifth braid, Devakanya liked to make them look good (quality, not quantity), when a stranger and a small child wandered over to her particular patch of grass.
Startled, the small girl picked herself up and quickly scurried behind the tree, sure she was safe where no one could see her. She waited a few moments, listening to the man talk. Finally, she peeked around the thick trunk, and that's when she spotted Blackie lying alone with her grass braids. Oh no! He was with the strangers! She couldn't save him!

Before the distraught little girl could decide on her next step, the forlorn horse had been spotted by Ignacio. He cooed, dandelion petals exploding outwards at the noise. Toppling himself forward, he quickly crawled over to pick it up and set the horse on his legs. He promptly fell over, too top-heavy to stand.
Ignacio burbled in displeasure and shifted to sit again before he dragged the horse onto his lap. Thoughtfully, he petted its mane. Then, as Devon looked over to notice, he neatly inserted one of the toy's ears into his mouth and began sucking.
"Ignacio! s**t, stop that." Grimacing, Devon scrambled over and tried to pry the horse from his child's hands. "You don't know where it's been."

Oh no! That little boy was kidnapping Blackie! Kidnapping! How was she ever going to get him back? Devakanya worried her lower lip and slipping back behind the tree, looking around frantically for Zack. Zack was big and grown up. It was his job to fix things like this and save poor, helpless stuffed animals from horrible fates like getting taken away by the wrong child!
...where was Zack? Her magenta eyes widened in shock as she realized her guardian was no where to be seen. She hadn't seen him leave. He didn't tell her that he was going somewhere....did he forget her!? Horrified by the thought, the young girl almost forgot about poor Blackie. About to scramble out from behind the tree, she spied the strangers again...and the little boy was eating Blackie! He was going to die!
Terribly distressed, Devakanya leaned into the tree, small tears trickling down her face. She wanted Zack to come back and stop forgetting her, and she really wanted Blackie back.

"C'mon, c'mon." Devon resisted the urge to pull harder; he didn't want the toy to get ruined in case its owner returned. "Ignacio Garcia, let it the hell go before I..."
Abruptly (and thankfully for the child's young ears), Ignacio released the toy. He had seen something in the shadows of the tree and it looked much more interesting. He fell forward onto his hands and knees and, making as if he was stalking something, crawled slowly in the direction of the movement. "Bah?" he asked. "Bah wah bah?"
Devon looked up from his inspection of the horse to squint at his kid. "What now, Nacho?" The little boy pointed. Devon sighed. "You're not going to try and eat the tree, are you?"

Devakanya watched the man try to wrestle Blackie from the boy's mouth helplessly, sniffling and wiping her eyes. If he made it out of this alive, she should probably pick him some yellow flowers or give him some of her grass blades to say thank you. That was the right thing to do. He was trying to save her beloved friend, after all.
Suddenly, Blackie's attacker ceased munching the horse's ear and turned to look at- What was he looking at? Devakanya blinked owlishly, wiping her eyes again. Was the strange boy looking at her? He'd seen her! Quite worried he might try to eat her as well -she did have ears quite similar to Blackie's, after all, and she was not much larger than this boy- she began to slide around to the other side of the tree. If he couldn't see her, she was safe, right? Like hide and seek!

Ignacio put his palms against the rough bark of the tree and, to his caretaker's mild horror, took a moment to sniff it. Then he gave it a quick lick which only resulted in a horrible gagging and coughing. He fell back to land heavily on his diaper-padded bottom. Devon sighed and watched, the horse on his lap. "Do you really have to do that with everything, Nacho?" he asked. "It's pretty foul."
"Bah bah," answered the child and he scrambled up onto his hands and knees again. More firmly, he repeated, "Bah bah!"
"Uh, right. Bark."
Ignacio wrinkled his nose. Then he carefully began stalking around the tree trunk again. This time, though, he moved extra-quiet.

Devakanya sniffled as she remained hidden on the other side of the tree, wiping her nose. She had to stop crying, or he'd hear her. The boy had already heard her because of it. Remembering what Zack told her that time she cut herself when she fell in the pricker bushes, she stopped and took a long, deep breath. She exhaled shakily and took another deep breath. Finally, the young girl started to feel a little better. She wiped the tears from her cheeks and rubbed her eyes.
She heard a cough. Puzzled, she chanced a peek around the tree trunk. The fuzzy boy was eating the bark? Maybe he hadn't wanted to eat her after all. She slipped back to her hiding spot and settled to sit in the dirt. What a relief. Now she could just sit here in the shade and wait for the weird boy to finish tasting the tree. When his daddy took him home, she could go save Blackie. Hopefully, he'd forgive her for accidently abandoning him. At least he wasn't eaten!

Her hopes were doomed to be broken, though, as Ignacio finally completed his stealthy reconaisance. He appeared at her right elbow and beamed up at her toothily. "Bah bah," he greeted cheerfully. Then he flopped onto his stomach and stretched out his hands towards her in greeting.

Devakanya had no idea what was coming. A hapless victim, the tiny girl nearly leaped out out of her skin when the boy said his version of 'hello'. She stood quickly, watching him warily as he reached towards her. Was he trying to eat her too? He didn't like Blackie. Didn't he know she'd taste the same? She was a horsie too!
She sniffled and started shuffling sideways, slipping back around the tree to her original spot. Maybe the scruffy little boy would decide the grass was more interesting. Or the tree. Or maybe she'd get really lucky and Zack would remember to come get her and he'd take her home. That would be the best. Hopeful, the small unicorn child glanced around the park, face falling when she found the black-haired man was no where to be seen.
There was a strange noise above in the tree and Devakanya looked up. Something was moving around up there.
Actually, something was falling...
THUD!
A black-haired man had just fallen from the sky.

Ignacio howled in shock and scrambled towards Devakanya on his hands and knees until he was between her and whatever just fell. His back to her, he hissed at the man who had landed and growled under his breath. If he had been planning to defend his would-be playmate more fiercely, however, he was prevented abruptly as he felt himself part company with the ground.
Devon clutched his wayward child under one arm, balanced precariously on his hip, while he tried to maintain hold on the stuffed horse and the small, blue girl that had been the "bah bah" which Iggy had been so excited over. "s**t," he muttered as he tried to scramble further away from the stranger.

Devakanya blinked, more surprised by the kid in front of her instead of the man that fell from the sky only moments ago. Was he...protecting her? Wasn't he planning on eating her, though? Before she had time to mull over this, the boy was gone and she was being shuffled backwards by the boy's man. His father, probably. His father was the one who saved Blackie. Were they both saving her?
Baffled, the small unicorn girl looked back at the man crumpled in a heap. He was groaning now, rolling around in the dirt like a doggy. Devi wondered if it hurt, falling from a place so high up. They sky was very- Was he wearing headphones? Yes! Those were headphones! That must be Zack! It was her daddy falling from the sky! Oh no! The sky was so high! He must be hurt.
Zack, unaware of his child's worry, eventually rolled to his hands and knees, shaking his head back and forth. <********> but that hurt. He didn't even have a shirt on, because it was summer and it was hot. He groaned again, pressing his head to an arm before looking around. There was Devakanya, staring at him...with two total strangers.
"Devi?"
What the hell?
"Don't touch her!" he barked, scrambling to his feet.

Devon blinked and took another step back, awkwardly adjusting his hold on both children to the movement wouldn't dislodge them. "Like hell," he shot back. "You almost landed on her, jackass. I'm not gonna let some freak just pick up a cute kid like her."
Ignacio added a growl to his guardian's words, eyes narrowing and his little fists swinging a bit. "Mmm, nah!" he managed to holler back.
"Her parents are probably somewhere around here."

Zack growled, pulling himself to the feet and brushing himself off. He picked some small rocks off his arms and looked up at the stranger, brushing a hand through his hair. He gave it a good shake, some leaves falling from the spikes. He motioned Devi over, giving her a little smile before giving the large, large man a dirty look.
"I am her parent, jerkface. Her name is Devakanya. That stuffed horse right there is hers, his name is Blackie, and you damn well better give him back to her. She goes every where with him," he rambled, sorta hoping in the back of his head this might prove he actually was her guardian.
Meanwhile, Devi sat silently, waiting for the man to put her down so Zack could take her home.

Ignacio blew a loud and obnoxious raspberry at Zack. Devon, meanwhile, looked down to the little blue-tinted girl cradled against his side. "Is that for real?" he asked with clear disbelief. "Is this bonehead your dad?"
