The sun was glaringly bright on a cloudless summer day, and while its rays drove many people to slather themselves with sunscreen, they merely warmed Pire's skin as he sat on a rock near the lake with Flametongue ((book)) open in his lap, carefully igniting the end of a dry stick.

A young girl of about 14 scanned the area, her pink eyes narrow as she tried to shield the sun from them. Kiraboshi looked down at the small cat-eared boy who was firmly attached to her leg. She gave a sigh, and patted his head. “I don’t see ‘em yet, calm down,” she murmured, rolling her eyes. Kira pulled her brown hair into a quick tail, carefully avoiding her feline ears, and gave her shirt a flap. Heat was never her forte.
Little Nyoko nuzzled against his mother’s leg. It wasn’t the heat that bothered him, it was who his playmate would be today. He had met the child before, and wasn’t quite too sure about what to make of him. He twitched his big brown cat ears, a sure sign of his nervousness, and eyed the park with his indigo colored eyes. He blinked; was that fire over there. Nyoko whimpered loudly and pointed.
Grinning, Kira ruffled his brown hair. “I think you found our friend,” she said as she took off, pulling Nyoko slowly behind her.
(X.x; I hope that’s ok~ He was playing with the fire stick, right? )

Pire pressed a claw to the tip of the stick, willing it to burn. The end barely started smoking, so he tried a little harder. Ah!! Too much power! The entire stick disintegrated into small pile of ash and sparks. He frowned, as he brushed the embers from the pages of the book (Luckily, Flametongue seemed to be fireproof.) and started re-reading the passage. Maybe there was something he missed.
Absently, he wondered when Nyoko was going to be here. They were supposed to meet at the lake, right? Pire had already been here for a few hours, but then again, Leon was at rehearsal all today and he'd forgotten the meeting time.

"Excuse me. Are you Pire?"
The Cat Youkai stepped forward, a sweet smile on her face. Her tail swished back and forth as she grinned, pulling on Nyoko's arm. He tumbled forward, only to squeal and rush back behind Kira. Sighing, Kira picked Nyoko up with ease, and sat him down squarely on the ground by Pire's rock.
"I'm Kiraboshi," she said with a slight smirk, "and this is Nyoko. I'm very pleased to meet you."

"Nice ta meet'cha!" Pire chimed with a bright smile, hastily hopping off the rock and sticking out one paw to shake while trying to brush the soot off himself and hide the evidence of fireplay. Other kids parents usually didn't let them play with him anymore once they found out, but he was getting better at controlling it. Really, he was! It was all in the book. The foxboy flashed her a cheeky grin and waved at Nyoko. "Hallo again. Are you still skert'a me?"

Kira tried her best to hide her laughter as she shook his paw. She had noticed his stealthy hiding of the ashes, although she was sure Nyoko hadn’t. Her sharp eyes caught almost everything, including Nyoko shaking behind her. She gave a light hiss, and pushed him forward. “Nyoko,” she said sternly, giving him a look. He gulped, shook his head, and retreated behind Kira once again.
Throwing up her hands, Kira patted Pire. “I’m sorry, sweetie. Nyoko’s shy, and he’s scared.”
“I am not Mama!” Nyoko cried, jumping out. “I have powers too! I’m not scared o’ him!”
Raising an eye, Kira retorted, “Then prove it, little kitten.”
Nyoko huffed. He HATED when Kira called him a kitten. He marched up to Pire, and threw out his hand. “I’m Nyoko, and I ain’t scared o’ you!”

Pire grasped his hand firmly and shook it once, then stuck out his tongue playfully. "Good, now I can try an' make you skert'a me." Of course, he wasn't serious, and if Nyoko was a water-mage like he said at school, it wasn't a problem anyway, since they were standing right next to a lake. Speaking of which.. "Hay Nyoko, you're a water mage, right? Ken'ya do anything besides make hearts?"

Blinking at the strange request, Nyoko glanced up at Kiraboshi. She shrugged her shoulders. "Don't exhaust yourself. I’ll be over there if you need help,” Kira told him, pointing to a bench shaded by a tree. She waved and trotted over, flopping herself down and pulling a book from her purple bag.
Nyoko gave a weary smile. “I…can sorta make water move. Mama Kira’s teaching me more, but I can do small stuffs now.” He moved to the edge of the lake, and closed his eyes. Breathing in for a count of seven, holding it for another seven, and exhaling in the same count, he calmed himself the way Kira taught him. Opening his eyes, he held his hand over the lake’s shore.
Water rose in a small stream towards his hand. It curled around his fingers, around his arm, down his back, like vines on a rock. He giggled; the water always tickled him. He turned and faced Pire, the water still swirling around his body. “Mama said I have to get the water to trust me, ‘fore I can do big tricks.”

Pire watched closely, entranced by the way the water moved and flowed. Sure, fire was beautiful in it's own way, but he had never seen anything move so gracefully. The catboy had such minute control over his element that it reached out to greet him gently, politely, like a friend. It was..tame, for lack of a better word. Pire had plenty of power behind his fire; so much that the flames seemed to blossom spontaneously into his hands, but after he brought it into existance, he couldn't even hope to control it, much less with the finesse that Nyoko had. Suddenly eager to learn, he questioned inquisitively, "What'dya mean 'get the water to trust you'? And what was that thing you're doing with closing your eyes? Is that supposed to help?"

Nyoko lost his concentration with the unexpected outburst from Pire. The water froze for a split second before it crashed down on the cat, drenching his clothes. Letting out an annoyed mew, Nyoko looked up. “That was something Mama Kira calls ‘meditation’. It calms the flow of energy inside your body, so you can work with it better.” Nyoko shook himself, sending water everywhere. “And Mama Kira says you have to get the water to trust you before you can fully control it. She says, it may use your energy to move ‘round, but you haffa get it used to the energy first. ‘Coz then it moves better. Once you work with the element enough, it‘ll trust you, no matter what form it‘s in. She says, one day, I‘ll be able to call on rain from the sky.”
Nyoko set his mouth in a firm line, and, moving down his body, called to the water once more. It burst upward from his clothes, forming a ball in his hand. His clothes now dry, he tossed the water back into the lake. “Mama Kira’s the best mage there is!” he boasted proudly, “And she trains me. One day, she said I’ll be a great mage, too!”

"Trust.." he said aloud, tilting his head to one side thoughtfully. The water had to trust Nyoko. Was the same true for him? Could he not control fire because it didn't trust him? Glancing quickly around to make sure Kira and any other nearby adults wasn't paying too much attention, Pire turned a paw palm up and ignited the air. Sparks shimmered in the roll of heat seconds before a cool reddish flame appeared. Trust. No, the fire trusted him. All fire trusted him. He'd been able to call fire for as long as he could remember. He could do it in his sleep if he wanted, and had done it in his sleep several times he didn't want it. Fire trusted him, it just wouldn't listen very much. In response to his frustration, the flame in his hand brightened to yellowish white and flared slightly.
"Hay Nyoko," he asked finally. "D'ya think you can teach me mekidation?"

Nyoko had taken a step back. He didn't really trust Pire yet, and he trusted those flames even less. Glancing nervously over to his mother, he said, "Mama Kira is a better teacher...."
In reality, Nyoko didn't want to teach Pire. What if his flame got out of control? He gave a light whimper. Being burned wasn't his idea of fun.

Sensing Nyoko's hesitation, Pire's expression soured slightly. "But you're great at taming the water. I'm sure you could teach me." And what did Nyoko have to be afraid of anyway? He was a water mage. He had the elemental advantage, plus they were standing right next to a lake. He couldn't possibly evaporate a whole lake.
More importantly, if Nyoko's mom found out that the foxboy made fire, she wouldn't let them play together anymore. Nobody's parents liked fire. There was Smokey the Bear and the lighting bug and all the other warnings that said fire was dangerous, yet it was just as much a part of Pire as his paws. It was natural to him, but dangerouos, which made him dangerous.
"Nyoko, I's got a secret." he said finally, pulling Flametongue out of hiding and running his paws over the pages of Firesign script. "I found a book that says how to not burn when I don't want to, but I can't do it. Fire doesn't listen to me. I wanna learn so I don't burn people no more."

Nyoko’s ears drooped. “Really? You have a book just about your element? That tells you things?”
Mama Kira had tons and tons of books at her place. Her room was crammed with them, and the another room was half-full as well. But Mama Kira had books on monsters, the ancient ways, mages as a whole. She didn’t have a book solely dedicated to water mages. Her brother, she had explained, was a water mage, but not a very good one. She didn’t know many of the spells he might be able to do. She was trying to find a book, she had said, but she didn’t go into town often, and when she did, she could never find one.
Nyoko yearn to know what kind of spells he could one day cast. He took a slight peek at the book. “Does it…can I…um...will you show it to me?” he mumbled after a moment of stuttering. “I’ll teach you to meditate, if you show me your book,” he told Pire slowly.

"It's a deal!"
Pire hopped back up onto his rock and balanced the book on his knee. He patted the space beside him as an invitation to sit down. "Dad doesn't know anything about magic n' stuff, so I hafta learn everything from this book. It's called Flametongue."
As he traced a claw along the lines of foreign text, they seemed to glow with energy for a moment. "I can read it, but it's written in something called 'Firesign'. It's got all sorts of spells and stuff and it tells about how other firefoxes used their power. What d'ya wanna know?"
