Jerd someone who is obsessed about Japan. Also known as otaku. But otaku's wrong.

Because
I like Japan.
No, I'm crazy about Japan. In spring time, I photograph sakura, when I'm bored I fold origami, when I'm online, I hang out on this anime community, when my mum wants to eat lunch with me, we always eat sushi
and so on.
All I think about is Japan. When my friend put her sandwich on the table, I said "Eww, they would never do that in Japan.", if people talk about movies I tell them about anime, if someone mentions food in other countries, I say Japan has the most healthy kitchens.

So
this thread is for discussing or spamming or whatever
in the name of Japan.

Nihon ni kawatte oshiokyo, or something like that, but the word that means 'punish' should be exchanged for 'chat'.

I'm now moving a discussion here smile

Isn't ん n/m anyway. Not just n (though, as far as I remember, it usually is).

I'm upset I can't read that properly. crying I used to be able to read hirgana.

Well, in school we learned that ん is 'n' and nothing else, but I've seen on the internet that it's translated to 'm' sometimes, and in the media as well (like... sempai). I think it isn't that important. You know, romaji isn't their alphabet, we just want a way to explain hiragana with. When someone invented their writing system, /s/he probably didn't say "to write sakana, we should write 'さかな' or 'sakana'." The only correct way to write sakana is either 魚 or さかな .

Also, my computer doesn't translate 'm' with 'ん' (Yeah, because I think Windows is the thing to ask when it comes to Japanese)

Ah. We were taught is was a sort of nm sound, though depending on the word could be pronounced n or m. My teacher had spent at least three years in Japan.
And instead of r or l, they had a kind of combination sound (i.e. ra ri ru re ro in romaji). I'm not sure how to write in hirigana on here and I only know ri in katakana...and no kanji.

I like Jeek. Then we could be jeeky, ya know?

I want to study Japanese in college. Maybe study abroad in Japan, too. Funny, I don't think traveling abroad suits my major: computer science.

My teacher was born in Japan, but she married a Swede and HERE SHE IS! biggrin heart
Well, like 'ri', 'ra', 'ru' and 're' then? They have a sound that sounds like 'r' and 'l' at the same time. Once my teacher said "Lingo" and I was like "LOL? Wanna dance?" but then she repeated herself, saying "Ringo".
(ringo = apple )

I would teach you how to write in Japanese, but I don't know what all the computer-things are called in English ._.;; There's a language-panel. That's what I can tell you xp

I remember that Japanese doesn't have any syllables ending in "m", so when you transcribe foreign words with that sound into Japanese, it is approximated with the "n" sound.

For example, "lolicon" is short for "Lolita complex", so theoretically it should be "lolicom", but since Japanese doesn't allow that, the "m" becomes an "n" because it's the closest.

If you think about it this way, "m" and "n" only differ in that "m" is labial and "n" is alveolar - that is, only a little bit further back in the mouth, so it's as close as you get if you can't have "m".

Disclaimer: I've never had any formal instruction in Japanese.

I have like Windows 2000, I think. I don't know, something like that. But my computer is really outdated, so I'm guessing it's not already on there. D;

...Tee hee, we be jeeky jerds then. And it's all good. 3nodding

To bring up another aspect of Japan, I just finished watching Letters From Iwo Jima and found it to be very intense and sad.
Dedication to the country is extreme, to the point of ritual suicide, even with the expense of never seeing family members again. At the heart of every war, though, are just soldiers sending letters about the weather to mothers who only pray for their safe return home...

Anyway, what do the jerds think of Japan's military history, as in...involvement in WWII, strategies, even Japanese-Americans' imprisonment in concentration camps after Pearl Harbor?

*Shrugs* I think t'is interesting.

I don't know much about it. I always get so confused during History in school @__@ Who killed who?
Well, I know about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but that wasn't so much about what they did.

I've heard they thought they were protected by some God or something (you can't beat the land of the sun, can you?) and that it was impossible for them to loose...

Letters from Iwo Jima, eh? I really want to see that film. It would be a good Steven Spielberg piece to see. The last film I saw of his was Schindler's List, and that was phenomenal.

Didn't the US relocate thousands of Japanese-American civilians into internment camps and rigorously interrogate them, under the suspicion of being potential spies for the Japanese enemy?

I think I remember a history teacher of mine saying how grotesquely hypocritical that was on America's part, when at the same time we were fighting a war against the Nazis to put a halt to the imprisonment and extermination of the Jews.

Perhaps America's case was on a smaller scale and not as violent, but the concept is the same at the core. Americans were targeting people because of their ancestry, just as the Nazis did with Jews, the Roma, and many other people.
