Techie L gripped Caleb's hand firmly. She didn't want him running off just yet. Not before his mentor got here. They were outdoors in a large partially forested training run. There was an enormous cement fence enclosing the area, but Caleb wasn't supposed to know that. The weather looked ominous and L checked her watch irrately although it was still early. She would hate to be caught out in a rainstorm.

Caleb's tail wagged excitedly as he saw the outdoors. Peering about, the boy didn't see the fence and couldn't wait until he got loose of L's grip to run as far as he could. They wouldn't be able to catch him!
Riordan and Kaden walked down the hallway hand in hand. They'd spent quite some time pouring over Caleb's file that they had got on the last trip and had noticed the many attempts at escaping. It gave them a bit of concern regarding potentially bringing him home, but they'd cross that bridge when they got to it, each hoping that a good home would make the boy decide to stop running.
This time, the men had managed to arrange a babysitter for Reese, hoping to be able to spend more time with Caleb without his future brother's interference. Plus, Reese could benefit from some time spent away from his parents for a change.

Sensing the motive that went along with Caleb's impatient squirming all too well, L only gripped his hand tighter as they waited. Briefly, she wondered if the Mentor had gotten the location. They were already several miles away from the main facility, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. She checked her watch again, hoping fervently that the Mentor would arrive before Caleb pulled some wacky stunt and she lost him.

Finally, the two men found the door that they'd been told to go through. "Bloody place is a maze," Kaden muttered as he opened the door. Both men blinked at the harsh sunlight and moved outside to close the door behind them once again.
Caleb's squirming halted for a moment as he spotted the two men coming outside. Tail wagging, he tried to pull loose from L to go greet the men that were moving towards him, but just not fast enough.
The two men grinned at the boy's enthusiasm, trying to quicken their step. Though they had a feeling there was most likely a fence around this area, they couldn't be too sure. Best to just get to the boy quickly and hope to distract him from any thoughts of escaping.

Techie L let out a mental sigh of relief as the two men appeared. Soon it wouldn't be her fault if Caleb got away..well, it would still be her fault, but she wouldn't be the one out in the rain looking for him later. With one hand still gripping Caleb's she put the other palm up to feel for raindrops. Was it sprinkling already? Nope. Just her imagination. Weather excluded, this was going to be a fairly simple test of the pass/fail variety. Either the subject Goldfur got away or he didn't. The three people involved weren't supposed to know that, of course.
"All right." she said while nudging a rubber container with her foot, "Frisbees, tennis balls, and all other toys in here. Meet me back here when the sun goes down. Have fun!"

Both men, expecting a bit more instruction than what they'd just received, blinked for a moment. Kaden recovered first, kneeling down to Caleb's level. "Sounds like they've got all kinds of fun toys for us to play with." The man fished into the container for a moment and pulled out a ball first, remembering the boy's love for the ball game they'd played last time.
Caleb grinned at the two men. These two were going to be much easier to get away from. Too trusting. That was what was wrong with some people. They would believe anything. But the boy's train of thought crashed as Kaden brought out a ball. He liked to play ball. Tail wagging in his excitement, he waited for Kaden to toss him the ball.
Riordan smiled and peeked into the container to get an idea of what was in there for later. Though Caleb didn't seem to lose interest in things fast from their last visit, it wouldn't hurt to be prepared to suggest another thing quickly.

Having ducked out of sight, Techie L pulled out her walkie and contacted the surveillance techies that were assigned to her for the afternoon. "This is L checking in. Goldfur and his mentors have been left at the primary location."
"Affirmitive." came the reply "No cameras there, but we've got them on audio."

Kaden grinned at the boy's enthusiasm and tossed the ball gently in Caleb's direction. The youngster eagerly pounced on the ball as it rolled near him. Wildly, the boy hurled the ball back in the general direction of the two men. Riordan stepped quickly to retrieve the ball, another ball bulging in his pocket. He tossed the first ball back towards Caleb.
The game of catch went on for some time before the first ball rolled out of sight when Caleb threw it a little too hard. "Oops..." the boy giggled and started off after it when Riordan pulled the other ball out of his pocket.
"We can go get it later. Why break our game now, though?" The man told Caleb, who frowned just a bit. Where they going to let him get away? Okay, granted, he'd been rather distracted by the game of ball. Curse his fun-loving side...
"Wanna go get ball now!" With that, the boy darted off, displaying that landspeed that the two men had read about. Kaden and Riordan threw each other anxious glances before running after the young boy. It wouldn't be good to lose their potential child...

"L! He's on the move!" the walkie crackled. They needn't have informed her. From her place atop a surveillance tower, she could see for herself the small form moving steadily over the landscape, occasionally flashing bright gold. Moving more slowly were two other figures, the mentor and his housemate. When she put down her binoculars they looked as if they were hardly moving.
"Goldfur rushing straight into Camera set 2. Let me know when you see him." She responded calmly. "I'm tracking them from the tower." Caleb might be making a run for it, but he hadn't gotten away yet.

Caleb grinned as he glanced over his shoulder at the slow men. Hah! He had gotten away from them. There was no way they cou- The boy came to a sudden halt as a bright yellowish-green color caught his eye. It was the ball! His tail wagged at the sight of it. The boy shook his head, but it was too late.
"Oh, look! You found the ball, Caleb!" Kaden said as his hand gently fell onto the boy's shoulder. "Good job on finding it."
He had been thwarted in this attempt... but he would succeed next time. Next time, he wouldn't allow himself to be distracted by something as simple as a ball...
Riordan had to pause and catch his breath. "Why don't we go back to the clearing so we can play ball again? There's too many trees around here..."

Hah! For all those nasty little tricks, he was still just a kid. Sometimes it was hard to remember that in light of what they were going to become. Sometimes, L regretted being normal..but only sometimes. "Goldfur has been reclaimed." she told the crackling walkie, maybe a little too smugly. It would still be a while before the dusk, but just then a fat raindrop plopped onto the end of L's nose. Well, she supposed it wouldn't hurt to end things a little early. She slowly made her way back to the meeting place, remembering to grab a pair of umbrellas on the way out.

Kaden grinned and kept his hand upon Caleb as they walked back to the clearing. "Or maybe we could even play frisbee..." The man commented, pausing to frown up at the sky for a moment. If only that rain would hold off... they hadn't had nearly enough time to play with Caleb yet. Though they'd have plenty of time if they were approved to be the boy's guardians.
Caleb frowned as he saw L in the clearing upon their arrival. Why was she back already? Was she mad because he tried to run off again?

By the time L was within hearing distance, the rain was already falling steadily. She was sheilding herself with one umbrella and held the other out to the two men, ushering Caleb under the shelter of her own. "This way" she commanded, tromping her way over the muddied ground with more confidence than a mere behaviorist should have when out in the elements. Once she had led the group back to the safety of the main building, she pulled a bundle of paperwork from an inside pocket of her labcoat. "Sirs, these are the release documents. Most of it has already been filled out, I just need you to sign here, here and.." She flipped through the stack until she came to the page that she'd marked. "Here. There is also the matter of living arrangements. Would you prefer to take Caleb home with you or have him continue boarding here? I understand that you have another child with special needs, and either is perfectly acceptable. His schooling will be done here, of course, unless you'd prefer to teach him yourselves."

The men gratefully took the umbrella offered, though already rather wet from their walk back. Caleb scowled as he was herded under the same umbrella as L. Riordan and Kaden gave a bit of a sigh once back inside and out of the weather. Both men's jaws about dropped when handed the paperwork. Riordan grinned from ear to ear as they scrawled signatures in the required locations.
Kaden smiled at L. "Home with us. We've already got a room ready for him in hopes that we'd be able to take him with us." He glanced down at Caleb. "What about it, little guy? Wanna come home with us?"
Caleb nodded and grinned, then took the hand that Riordan reached out towards him.

Well, this particular venture was a success. L wasn't sure to be pleased or not. Since the research department rarely got it right on the first try, she was a little wary of what might go wrong but all the signs were okay right now, so why not?
"All right Caleb. If you want to take any of your things with you we can go get them now. If not, you three are free to go. Faction S will phone in a week's time to see how things are going."
