I looked through the forums, and I couldn't find anything that related to sunburn and how that leads to cancer. I found quite a bit on cancer itself, but I didn't think that was the appropriate place to post my question. So, here I am, and since I'm new here, I do apologize if I'm not supposed to be doing this.
Okay, my question: Sunburn is, quite literally, light burning away the top skin cells. That's about all I know. I would like to know a little bit more (and it doesn't help that I got really sunburned a week ago). Do the cells die immediately, or are they simply burned and then die later, and that's what all the 'peeling' is that you get with sunburn? But, my major question: how does getting too much sun lead to skin cancer?
Thanks to anyone who knows anything and is willing to respond!

I'm not sure as to why a sunburn becomes a sunburn Exactly, But I do know why the Sun can cause Cancer. Simply, it's the UV Radiation penetrating into your cells and damaging your DNA, now your DNA Codes for all your proteins(Including Enzymes, 'cause Enzymes Are proteins.) And if the Particular Gene that Codes for the Enzyme that Signals your cell to stop, er....Splitting for lack or Remembering the Actual name, then you get an uncontrolled growth of cells, thus Cancer. That sums it up to the best of my Abilities, I'm sure there are other genes and Ezymes that are also affected.
* EDIT * Ha! Mitosis! That's the one! Not splitting, Mitosis, even though it is technically still splitting to a degree. mrgreen

Like Tiki mentioned, Simply put UV light can cause damage to your skin. So does sunburns due to over exposure to the sun. Of course there are other factors, depending on your heridity and the enviroment you live in. If you live somewhere, where you get sun all the time, your skin is more adapted to absorb sun therfore less likely to get skin cancer.
Tanning can also cause skin cancer! So watch out for that, just becuase your not in actual sun, tanning is your skin's natural responce to UV light, so your still being exposed...even if the light is "artificial".
Did you know that most people recieve 80% of their lifetime exposure to the sun by the age of 18yrs?[X] This web page I linked here goes threw a perty good intro to skin cancer. You might find it helpful.

Sun Charm Just as a little fact but doesn't sun give you vit. D? Yes, I do believe you get Vit. D from sun exposure, but it's still not smart to think that any kind of intentional sun exposure for any given time can be benificial. Normal Vit. D levels can be maintained trew a normal diet. The sun is NOT good for you! It's a ball of buring gas, not that far away....it's dangerous! gonk mrgreen Skin Cancer is increasing exponentioally! MOre and more people are suffering from Skin Cancer and there is plenty of scientific research that confims that the best thing to do is avoid excessive unprotected sun exposure.
This website debunks some myths about Sun exposure. I want to point out Myth #3 which perty much states that if you wear sunblock your body can not get vit D.
The fact is that even the best sunblock can't block out UV radiation 100%, so the ray's that do hit your skin do provide enouh Vit. D. [X]

Because ultraviolet light has so much energy, when it is absorbed by organic molecules such as DNA or collagen in skin the covalent bonds in these molecules may break. When DNA is broken in this manner it can form new incorrect bonds, basically mutations, that may lead to cancer. The sunburn itself is largely due to the degradation of other tissues such as collagen. Even it ultraviolet rays do not strike these tissue polymers directly they can form free radicals from other molecules in your cells, which in turn can damage tissue.

Sun Charm Just as a little fact but doesn't sun give you vit. D? Vitamin D is produced by conversion of cholesterol by specialized cells(Ill find out exact what kind) which is done through use of the suns light.

Rulixs I don't think you can get Vitamin D from diet... it has to be from exposure to sunlight... From fortified food, such as Vitamin D milk and such.

I believe it's a mixture of both. Vitamin D is found in foods such as milk, but the UV in sunlight causes it to change chemically into a form usable by the body. At least that is what I remember learning.

It leads to cancer because of over exposure of the skin to the sun's heat we get burned and it will turn into red and when you touch it. it will be so painful. maybe you have stayed outside the burning sun for many hours

Yes, you need to see sun to get vit. D (unless you have fortified food - it doesn't come naturally). However, just fifteen minutes with your arms and face exposed can get you enough to keep your processes running smoothly.
Fast fact: It can take years to recover from a serious sunburn - even if it looks and feels like the burn is gone.
