Okay, this arises in part due to the new HP book, but also about what happened when the last book came out. Before my best friend spoiled who died for me because she saw it in a fanart. This time when I get my hands on a copy of the book and before I get a chance to read it, a college girl's boyfriend blurts out who dies in this one. *series of vulgar terms muttered under breath* Thankfully there was Dead or Alive 2 to relieve this tension or else someone was going to get badly hurt. domokun
I absolutely hate spoilers. Especially if you spend the money to buy the book, you want to be surprised and when you know about one of the key events it takes the pleasure out of reading you have that nagging in the back of your head wondering if this is the part where a certain someone will bite the dust. (Which is probably why I didn't go see the last SW movie since we all know what happens to Anakin!)
So how is it with you guys? Do you care if you get them or is it only for certain parts, like deaths?

People that spoil it for you should be tortured without end. Unless they want someone to, nobody should say anything and just let us find it out ourselves. My mother likes the series but she only listens to them on audio books so it takes her awhile to get ahold of them so she asks me to tell her what happens, in those situations its ok to spoil it, but thats the only time its fine.

I went to class the other day and two of my friends were talking about the said Harry Potter book. I said "Don't tell me, I haven't read it yet!" And they went on patrol to ensure no one else in the class said anything because I didn't want to know. Then I clicked on the entertainment forum on Gaia two nights ago and there, in the title of the post, was the spoiler. Right there. I didn't even need to click on the post. I was SO angry.
I must say, though, I don't think the book will be spoiled for me. It lacks some of the mystique that had surrounded it, but I'll probably still enjoy it. Similarly with Star Wars, though we all know what's going to happen, it's the how it happens that makes the movie(and as a side note, I would have never imagined that was how Anakin was going to turn .. you know).
Although, there are a few things that will really ruin a good book. Like a mystery. If you know whodunit, you really can't enjoy the mystery in the same way you would if you were trying to figure it out.
I guess spoilers can just be overexcited people, but they're also very inconsiderate, at best. At worst, they're sadistic (taking delight in removing the suspense from a good book).

I dont mind spoliers. if anything they make me want to read the book more to find out exactly how something happens. I was told who dies in harry potter 5 before i read the book, but not how. So i bought the book and read as fast as i could just to see exactly how everything went. I have a weird love of detail I guess sweatdrop 3nodding

I guess I don't need to worry about receiving spoilers for my unfinished books because I don't think that many of them are that popular. sweatdrop

I didnt think anyone would know who Tamora Pierce was, yet theres quite a few fans of hers in this guild alone. now I myself have never heard of that book series, but I bet someone else in our lovely guild has. 3nodding

Heh. It's just if I know how something ends I will rarely finish it. The same goes for books, games, movies. I honestly believe the only thing keeping me reading HBP was Remus Lupin.
My current reads for the next week or two will probably be biographies... I'm getting into those again.

Spoilers have never bothered me. I read not simply for the plot but for everything else that is behind the words. Therefore, things that happen in the plot don't always affect me as strongly as they might someone else. Granted, I do get upset when favorite characters die, or the author takes the book in a direction I feel it doesn't need to go in, but in general I read the book to read the book. I love words and stringing them together to form coherent page after coherent page is the best idea anyone has ever had.
Thus, it doesn't matter to me either way whether I know the whole plot before I read the book. Besides, what about the re-reading of books? I re-read books all the time, though I shouldn't since my "to read" pile is so large (and growing by the day), and knowing the plot doesn't seem to do much to affect my appreciation of the book and its storyline. It's still a good book and a great story.

Re-reading of books is a whole different subject. You can savor what you know and discover clues that you might have missed the first time through. I just think there's something magical about reading through a book for the first time and being completely enthralled by what could possibly happen next. Doesn't further my enjoyment to be wondering whether this is the chapter that so-and-so will die thanks to careless people.

Um ... I like spoilers. Half the fun of reading is the details along the way. Even if I already know what is going to happen. Just the act of reading is enjoyable.

I got lucky with HBP. I went away for a week-long camp the day after it came out and it was waiting for me when I got back. I didn't have much of a chance to talk to anybody who had finished it before me. I stayed up until 1 AM just to make sure nobody would be able to spoil it for me the next day in school (I go to a year-round school).
