Vera Lachlan was not impressed.

Everything had seemed so official. So organized, proper, and maybe a tad pompous. For heaven's sake, the organization's name was Divinity. Despite that -no, maybe because of that -she felt secure. It was something you trusted off the bat, without a conrete reason.

Standing before the shoddy entrance into the compund, she felt that confidence waver. What sort of place had such a crappy looking entrance? First impressions were important to a woman like her, and the disdain she felt was quite apparent. She looked embarassed to be entering such a place. Chin held high, Vera knew she would endure it, and briskly swung open the door, entering as discreetly as was possible. Her loudly clicking heels ruined any hope of subtlety, and the brief pause in noise when she stopped in her tracks made it even more noticable.

"Now that's more like it," ran through her mind as she glanced around the entryway. Ignoring the leeting suspicion that maybe it was shoddy outside because there was something suspicious going on, Vera pressed forward into the next room. Her sights landed on a nervous looking blonde, who Vear was disappointed to see, was sorely in need of a haircut. She coughed quietly as she appraoched to get the young man's attention.

"Excuse me? I have an appointment."

The first words that popped into Nikita's mind when he saw Vera, were scary and high maintenance. Of course, scary went with pretty much everyone, but she seemed a tad bit more intimidating then many people he had met.

He offered a timid smile to Vera, before speaking.

"Are you Ms Lachlan, then?" Somehow, she didn't strike him as the first-name's sort, "I'm Nikita, the one in charge of greeting potential guardians..."

Although he still thought whoever it was that got him assigned to this job was insane.

"We sent some of the basic information with the invitation, but before we start, did you have any questions?"

The basic information...about the Sylphs, guardianship and so forth. Divinity's origins weren't covered, of course; that was something they preferred to not shout out to everyone.

Well, the boy needed to be cleaned up some and was a tad on the wibbling side, but at least he was polite. None of that first-name-basis nonsense coming from him. Respectful and mindful or patrons. Vera smiled at Nikita briefly, maybe it would ease his nerves. Even those not as jumpy as he was had a tendency to become so when around her. and she had come to the conclusion that she did, in fact, like him.

"Yes, I am Vera Lachlan," she affirmed, "And I don't have any questions, for now. I assume I'll be coming to you if I have some later on though?"

Vera peered at him, eyebrow raised. He didn't really look like he'd be that much help anyways, but Nikita did look like he would atleast try to. She understood all the details that this entailed, and felt that she was ready to handle it. Interstingly enough, that was petty much her outlook on life. How suprising.

The thoughts she had when she first entered the building wormed their way to the front of her mind. Feeling stupid as she asked, Vera felt it was necessary to do so anyways, "No, wait. I do have one. Forgive me for sounding rude, but this is all completely legal, correct?"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 17, 2007 9:16 pm

"Oh - entirely!"

In Gaia, anyway. But who ever said anything about elsewhere?

"According to Gaian laws, it's completely legal. Divinity prefers to stay out of the public eye though, because of the delicacy of what we're doing."

True, for the most part. Taking magical beings and making them human...it was something that sounded like it could very easily go wrong. It made sense for them to stay out of the public eye.

"Now, ah...you've already received the information on what the Sylphs are and what we're trying to do, so I'll explain some of the specifics. Also, if you'd like, I could give you a tour of a few of the options for apartments when we're done with this..."

He had mentioned that in the letter, right? He hoped he had. She didn't seem like the sort to take being forced to move to an apartment well, if she hadn't heard.

The assurance of legality sealed the deal. Vera felt relieved, though apparently she didn't really have that whole "women's intuition" thing down. Not that she needed it, she could fend for herself in other methods.

Ah, the apartment. Deffinately the worst part of this deal, but maybe even that would wind up not being as horrible as it seemed it would be. Even so, her voice was slightly clipped when she adressed the matter with Nikita.

"Yes, I think I would like to see the living arrangements. Are these prefurnished, or will I be brining my own furniture here? I'm not sure if everything will fit very well through your entrance," She frowned, her hand motioning towards the door of the entryway.
PostPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 4:56 pm

"We do have a back entrance, that's a bit larger.."

That one was made for this sort of thing. And trash pick-up, anyway; it was just a little alley that it led into. At least the entrance there was probably big enough to move things in, so she could get her furniture in.

"They all have basic furniture..b-but it could easily be arranged to move furniture in."

Standing up, he gestured for Vera to follow him, as he began speaking.

"The Sylphs are very unique, even when they become human...we've determined that they have one sense which is more heightened then the others, and one becomes weaker."

Vera already knew the basics (some guardians came in not even really aware of that), so he was jumping ahead to more 'advanced' things.

"We haven't figured out exactly why yet, but we think it has something to do with what they were most curious about as a Sylph..."

Placated at the thought of the comfort of her own belongings, Vera smiled once more. Not a particularly warm smile, but one that displayed pleasure nonetheless. She wanted to do this, yes, but it would be nice if the apartment didn't feel alien to her. After all, this was going to be her home for some time in the future.

She followed in step with Nikita, listening intently. She wanted to know as much as possible about this whole thing, and he had seemed to have calmed down a bit.

"How affected are their senses? Is it to the point of a disability, or is it more subjective child to child?" Vera wasn't exactly sure if she was ready to handle a child that needed extra caring for, but she was willing to try. Even though she was a bit intimidating -especially at first -that wasn't to say Vera was heartless. She had always liked children, and because of infertility issues, this was something that was very important to her.
PostPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 6:53 pm

"Well...it is very bad."

To the point of a disability, yes. Sariael, the sylph he had been raising - although she had grown so fast she acted older then him now - had been practically blind.

"But it gets easier as they get older, because their enhanced sense seems to help out. I helped raise one of our Sylphs...and she's practically blind. Her sense of smell is incredible - and, well, you wouldn't think that would help much. But she's learned to use it so that she can find things and people just by smell alone."

Sariael carried a cane, but her sense of smell was very handy; no one could sneak up on her. Unless they were in a dumpster, or something...then she might have trouble.

"So, it's not quite as bad as you would think. But it can be a... little difficult... when they're young."

Indeed, Nikita had calmed slightly. But it didn't mean he still wasn't nervous, especially when imparting information Vera may not like. While they talked, he had led them through the hallway with the mailboxes, and out into the open area.

Damn. That certainly added a complication she hadn't expected.

"Is there a particular reason that wasn't addressed in the letter I was sent? It seems rather important, don't you think?" Vera asked cooly. It wasn't going to sway her from doing this, but she wished that she had been more prepared for it.

Through her annoyance, Vera couldn't help being impressed by Nikita's little anecdote. Locating things and recognizing people by smell alone was rather impressive. Perhaps it wouldn't be all that bad after all.

"So, besides the skewed sense, the Sylphs are just like any other human?"
PostPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:19 pm

"Yes, as far as we can tell so far. It's still, well...experimental. The oldest Sylphs we have right now are teenagers, so we still aren't a hundred percent certain if there will be any more surprises...As for the letter - we thought it would be better to see if you were interested at all, before getting into specifics."

Nikita could hardly keep himself from cringing when Vera's tone had cooled - he had been beginning to calm down, but he could already tell she was one of those people that would always make him nervous. He knew several of them.

"I, ah...could arrange for you to meet Sariael as well, if you would like, to get a better idea of the Sylphs? She's the one I described."

They passed along one of the paths, and headed over to one of the central buildings. It had a large entryway, and seemed to be of good quality, although not showy.

"This is one of our apartment buildings..."

Entering, it was much the same as the entryroom to the compound had been: seek, gleaming oak, and very simple yet elegant design. There were stairs and an elevator, in this one; some of them didn't have elevators, but he didn't think Vera would be interested in those.

Vera's lips pursed, Experimental? Ah, so that's the catch. She was silent a moment before nodding, "Yes, I would very much like to meet her."

As they walked along the path, her eyes scanned the view. It was a bit plain, but it was still pretty. The buildings were of a decent size too; she had rather thought the worst of them until she had visual evidence.

As they stepped indoors, Vera voiced her approval, "This one would suit me fine, I think." It was classy, not garish and strange. A bit empty, but no one was living there yet, so that was to be expected. Venturing through the apartment, she was finding herself to be quite pleased. It was much roomier than she had gathered, looking from the outside. Most of the furniture was up to her standards as well, so she wouldn't have to bring as much as she initally thought.

"Yes, I've decided. There isn't a need to look at the other apartments, this one is just perfect." Vera announced, as she made her way back to Nikita.

"Alright...I'll mark you down for this apartment, then..."

There were many apartment buildings, but not many of them were actually open for guardians; most of them were already taken up by Divinity employees. He had a smaller apartment, himself; it was a smaller building, with the stairs outside...he preferred it like that. It felt more private to him, since it was in a corner of the compound.

Although the view really wasn't that great; the compound wall wasn't the most appealing feature.

"I think Sariael is busy today, but I can arrange a meeting for another time, if you would like..."

Things were going smoothly now, and Vera was pleased. In her mind, she was already figuring out where her belongings would go in her new apartment. She'd have to go shopping to get things for the Sylph as well, so she'd be ready when it arrived.

"Another time it is, then. And I have only a few more questions before I can let you go."

Vera had visibly lightened up again, and was back into non-threatening mode, "Do you know what senses the Sylph I'll be caring for has affected? Also, if you know what the gender is, that would be helpful."
PostPosted: Tue Jun 19, 2007 2:12 pm

"Senses...I checked this morning, on the readout I received. It looks as if this Sylph will have a heightened sense of touch, and limited sight."

Gender...now there was an uncertain area. Nikita wasn't sure if they higher ups just weren't sharing, or if they didn't know - after all, they hadn't had genders as Sylphs. The Sylphs were beings of energy; he wasn't even certain if they picked their human genders, if Divinity did, or if it happened without effort from either side.

He wasn't exactly on the 'in' with the work to transform Sylphs to human.

"Gender...I'm not sure, actually. The Sylphs don't have a gender, before being human - so I'm not sure what this one will wind up being."

Limited sight.. Vera had rather hoped it would be something like taste, or smell. Atleast there were many things out there to help the child, as blindness wasn't extremely rare.

"How curious," She mused, "I hadn't known about the lack of gender. Gender isn't as important as the senses though. I'll have to make sure to make the appartment safe enough." Heaven knows how Vera would react if the child was hurt because of something she could've prevented.

"And I suppose a suprise couldn't hurt anyways. Well, I think I'm set for now. I'll get a moving van to transport my belongings here sometime this week. Judging by the fact you don't know the gender, I suppose it's safe to assume that the kid isn't quite.. human yet. Make sure to contact me as soon as that occurs," Vera fished through her purse, digging out a pen and piece of paper.

Jotting down a phone number, she handed Nikita the paper, "Here's my cell phone number. I always have it on me, so most times are good."
