We all know about the books of the late JRR Tolkin. His trilogy, preceded by a prequel, have been adapted into numerous movies and sparked what has become one of the largest literature genres of our time. Yet, now, thirty-four years after his death, his son has now published another book under his name. Having gone through his manuscripts, the son has collected the works of the father into a new, "seamless" novel, claiming he didn't add a word. Part of me wants to be appalled at this use of a dead man's work, and part of me wants to go read it.

It's called Children of Hurin, and while the story is in The Silmarilion (so it's not like Tolkein didn't want anyone to read it) it is now published as a narrative like Lord of the Rings. I just want to read it. smile

Quite a lot of Tolkien's work is like that. He left endless piles of notes behind when he died; no wonder it's taking so long to get everything published.
(And, just for future reference, The Lord of The Rings isn't a trilogy. It's just one book that was published in three volumes.)

There is no shame in reading it. But if it ends up being bad, just tell the entire world so they never make the mistake of reading it. Any good reviews must be sent out as well.

Yes, it is indeed enticing to go read. I had heard, though, that this was an unfinished manuscript, and his son just finished the ending. Am I the only one who heard it? I don't know; I suppose it doesn't really matter either way. We have a new Tolkien story to read, Peoples!

It's Tolkien razz
The Silmarilion, you say? It's a good read, like a Middle Earth bible in ways. Still have yet to finish it myself... sweatdrop

My eye is twitching. Tokien, for one, and please (dear Lord, please) capitalise the 'I' in the title!
Yep, that's why I joined the guild. Grammar Nazi.
I read the Children of Hùrin and thoroughly enjoyed it, actually, but then again I am a huge fan of all of Tokien's work. I've read other works that have also been compiled after J. R. R. Tolkien's death by his son Christopher, notably some of the History of Middle Earth series. The Lay of Leithian, for example, tells the whole story of Beren and Lùthien in far more detail, and I enjoyed it so much that I learnt the first one and a bit cantos.
