-----IC News
6.14.2007 Gavin has grown into a child!
12.1.2006: Tragedy has befallen the apartment, as Remi has disappeared.
5.29.2006: Gavin grows into a toddler!
5.3.2006: This journal is created and Gavin's a ball of energy...in the literal sense.
-----OOC News
7.7.2007: The journal's finally redone. Patricia has a background, more characters have been added, and Gavin's personality has been updated. Now I just need to do some self-RPs to fill in the gaps.
6.26.2007: Six months and no progress later, I'm finally getting back into gear. Starting a new journal to get a fresh start. For the record, we're pretending that Gavin's been a child since he came under Patricia's care.
1.7.2007: New year means new layout. I'm giving this journal a much needed makeover over the next week or so.
12.1.2006: I've finally come to terms with the fact that I really dislike the way I characterized Remi. I know I can do much better than her, and therefore have had her disappear to make way for a new guardian character that I've actually spent time developing.

Do not steal any art or graphics from this journal. Just in case this ever becomes a norm, feel free to leave gifts so long as it isn't interrupting an RP. Please ask my permission before posting, unless of course you are another guardian. Have fun reading!

Name: Gavin Stage: Toddler Blend: Hawk Born: April 30, 2006
Hair color: Orangish-red Eye color: Orange Clothing: Anything that hasn't been destroyed beforehand by his antics. His shirts all have holes cut in the back for his wings to move freely
Personality: Gavin is very--well, Gavin. He's a very curious little boy who can neither back down from a challenge nor deny himself the excitement of adventure. So far he's proven himself to be quite the escape artist, leaving the metaphorical nest both with and without his guardian's knowledge.
If there's anything that Gavin loves best, it's playing the noble hero. He's started showing a streak of pride that he feeds through receiving praise from others. As a result, he has a desperate 'need-to-please.' For the most part his intentions are selfless, but we'll see how that pans out in the future. Right now, he has no problems performing any task asked of him, up to and including battling giant man-eating flowers in the gardens. Unfortunately, his hero complex leaves him oblivious to other things, such as the intentions behind the person he's supposedly 'saving.'
Gavin isn't exactly the cleanest child in the compound. All his adventuring has left him with seemingly permanent dirt stains, and his clothes hardly ever come clean. As a toddler he managed to create his fair share of chaos. Broken priceless vases, thrown tomato sauce, spilled soft drinks, projectile vomit...the works. Now that he's older, he's less clumsy but can still cause quite a bit of destruction if he's not paying attention. Even now, he's not entirely fond of baths. That nice layer of dirt feels perfectly fine to him.
Gavin's scope of family is a rapidly closing window. As a toddler, just getting to know the world, everyone—including those not on the compound—was a potential friend. He was never suspicious, never questioning, never accusatory. However, as a child he's getting a pretty good idea of who is part of the 'family' in the compound. Souls and their guardians are the 'okay' people. With anyone else he'll be a little bit wary.
The change in guardianship has had its effects on him. The loss of his first guardian only made his desire to be around those he knows and loves stronger. He doesn't want to lose them. In regards to his new guardian, he remains in denial and continues to call Patricia by her first name instead of 'mommy.'
Likes: Fluffy things, colors, his feathers, other peoples' feathers, hugs, touching things he's not supposed to, friendly people, Hawk Man, being the 'hero' Dislikes: Things that bite him, graham crackers, bathtime, creepy people, being ignored
Favorite Foods: Spaghettios and dog food O.o Favorite Colors: Rainbow, orange, blue Favorite Sound: Himself singing, though no one else seems to really like it Favorite TV Show: Hawk Man!!! Favorite Toy: Hawk Man action doll Favorite Souls: Haki and Osha
Phobias: Baths Talents: Sneaking out of the apartment, breaking things, creating chaos
Abilities:
Creation: After collecting a few strange items, Gavin found himself with the ability to create things. The first of his creations was a ninja suit and a dagger, both of which have currently been confiscated by his guardian. Basically, he has to focus on what he wants to create in his mind, and then poof! it's there. However, this takes a lot of Gavin's energy, rendering him immobile for at least the next fifteen minutes. The first couple of tries knocked him unconscious.

Name: Patricia D'arque Nicknames: Dubbed 'Picia' by Gavin before he could pronounce all three syllables. The name has stuck. Gender: Female Age: 28 Occupation: Former graveyard watchman and currently makes a living as a toymaker
Hair Color: Mousy brown Hair Style: Long frizzy curls that reach down to her waist Eye Color: Green Skin Tone: Ghostly pale Distinguishing Features: An eye patch over her left eye Clothing: Usually long, black Victorian-style dresses, though she's slowly discovering the uses of pants
Personality: Patricia is not your run-of-the-mill woman. Firstly, she's a very private person. What she does is none of your business, and if you really want to know that bad, then hang out for a few years until she can trust you. She takes a very cocky attitude toward strangers, openly insulting them if she feels they deserve it. Not afraid to offend, she can come off as quite callous and anti-social. Just as she believes her problems are her own, she assumes it's the same for other people. Bringing your conflicts to her will only elicit an apathetic shrug and a, "Figure it out yourself," from her. That is, unless you're family or a close friend.
Years of working in the pitch black of night with nothing but a lantern has also given her the uncanny ability to tell when a person is approaching her. If you approach her door, she'll probably open it before you even have the chance to knock.
While she spent the last eighteen of her twenty-eight years trying to figure out how to get into modern civilization, she still clings to tradition. So though she enjoys the luxuries of indoor plumbing and grocery stores, it's a bit more difficult to conform to modern clothing conventions and the constant rush of city life. Therefore, she prefers to wear her homespun dresses and stay on the compound, leaving only to check up on her nephew at the small toy store she set up to make sure he hasn't destroyed anything.
In regards to those she feels close to, she's fiercely dedicated to them. Patricia will knock over any obstacle blocking her from the ones she loves. She still has the cocky attitude with them, but in a more muted and playful sense. With children, she believes in raising them with the right values and will be very protective of them if she senses the slightest bit of danger. Teenagers are a bit harder for her to deal with, which causes her to butt heads with Franz all the time.
Romantically, Patricia considers herself celibate and asexual. Men have held no interest for her, and the thought of being attracted to a woman is totally foreign to her. The whole attraction thing in general is uncharted territory that she has no desire to cross. She believes in making friendships, not romantic relationships. This is not to say that she despises men and women--in fact, she rather enjoys their company if they can get past her social barriers. However, seduction and temptation are not part of her wiring, and never will be.
History: Patricia grew up in a very traditional town. Very traditional. A town where electric lighting was a luxury, outhouses were standard, and getting milk for the morning meant asking to borrow the neighbor's cow. It was a fairly small town on the side of a mountain, cut off from most modern civilization, containing maybe a few hundred people. The only contact with the modern world occurred when a family was charged with traveling to the city once a season--a different family every year--to buy supplies they couldn't make themselves, as well as the occasional trader and mail carrier that drove through.
Patricia was born as the fourth of five children: three brothers and one older sister. While her brothers were definitely of the rowdy sort, Patricia was definitely the problem child of the family. Her reign of terror upon her family started at ten years old, when it came for her family's turn to make the seasonal trips into the city. Prior to these excursions, she only knew of carrying bathwater, milking cows, and cleaning the outhouses. Like most other children who made their first trips to the city, learning that the bulk of her chores could be bypassed with a few technological innovations led Patricia into a stage of rebellion against the simple life. When told to get water for the day, she would respond with, "If you would just get some plumbing, we wouldn't have to go through this every day." However, unlike most others her age, she never grew out of this stage and made it her life goal to get back to the world of modern technology.
Patricia was very close to her two oldest siblings, Jorge and Charlotte. Jorge, like her, also longed for the world outside their simple town, but was too busy providing for his family to act upon his wishes. Charlotte acted as her mentor. She did not approve of Patricia's desires to leave the family, but didn't squash her dreams either. Charlotte married and moved out when Patricia was seventeen. Her parents expected their youngest daughter to do the same within a few years, but Patricia had another agenda. Not that she was opposed to marriage or having a relationship, but rather that she lacked any kind of attraction for another human being. Therefore, when her twenty-first birthday came and went without anyone else in her life, she took it upon herself to burden her family no longer. She would find work, and when she'd gathered enough money, she would move to the city.
Patricia took the responsibility of watching the local graveyard behind the small chapel in the back of town. In exchange for a very meager salary, she would watch the one-hundred year old burial ground through the night, making sure no one decided to disrespect the dead in anyway. Needless to say, it wasn't the most exciting or desirable job, but it was there that she met Hans. Hans was current watchman, old and decrepit, as well as the one who took her on as an assistant. It was hard for an old man with a peg leg to drive off a cocky group of teenagers--wanting to know if Granny Meredith took her gold bracelet along to the grave--all by himself, and good help was hard to find from a willing person. Pleased to have the company, Hans would tell Patricia his life stories, impart his elderly wisdom, and taught her how to carve wood.
This nightly routine went on for another seven years, during which an incident occurred that cost Patricia her left eye. One day a letter came in the mail for Patricia. It was a letter from the city, asking her to accept guardianship over a small child. Even though she was very confused, she took the opportunity to get out. The housing was free after all, and she'd saved enough money to travel there. Though it was hard to leave Hans and her family behind, this was her chance to go live the life that she wanted.
Along with all her belongings, Patricia took along Jorge's second-oldest son, Franz. Jorge wanted his fifteen-year-old son to see the world, and asked that she bring him along. While Patricia's not entirely fond of teenagers, she agreed to do so to please her brother.
Hobbies: Toy making, reading, terrorizing visitors, interior decorating Likes: Black, gullible people, small children, classy restaurants, being alone at night Dislikes: Overly happy people, teenagers, angst, messes, socializing on a regular basis, sunlight

Inanna: Gavin loves Ina, especially her fluffy tail. Now that Haki seems to have disappeared, she's the female Soul he hangs out with most.
Haki: During his time as a toddler, Haki was his best friend. She liked having him play 'hero,' made bath time fun, and helps him with his insane adventure ideas. He also created a tiny stuffed dragon for her, affectionately named Hakinby (short for Haki-Gavin-baby).
 Ismet: Never met...
Osha: Best friend EVER! Gavin and Osha bonded as the only two boys during the first few months at the compound. Since then, they've been completely inseparable.
 Elisa: Never met...
Ophiera: Gavin's only met Ophiera a couple times, but she's alright with him. She can't seem to talk though, which Gavin finds slightly strange.
Holden: Alien, or Ina's evil tail twin? Only time will tell. Gavin's not too sure about the raccoon boy.

Hawks
The term 'hawk' is actually used to categorize over 250 predatory birds of small to medium size. Their name is derived from the Middle English word 'hafoc,' which means "to grasp or seize." This is referring to their large talons, which they use to latch onto their prey. The talons are also designed to capture smaller birds in mid-flight. Hawks are part of a group of raptors that hunt during the day, rather than at night, along with ospreys, vultures, and eagles. They are found across the world, except in Antarctica, mostly in forests, marshlands, or open grasslands. The largest hawk is the Rough-Legged Hawk, with a wingspan of 56in. Females are also generally larger than males.
Hawks are believed to have at least eight times more acute eyesight than humans, putting their vision at 20/2. According to Dr. Louis Lefebvre, who came up with a method of determining avian IQ, hawks are the most intelligent of avian creatures. However, this method of determining IQ is derived from a bird's predatory innovations, so all this means is that hawks are very good at finding ways to catch their prey.
While these are wild predatory birds, hawks have been trained for falconry for hundreds of years. As one hawk expert states on the use of hawks in falconry, "The attack of the accipiters [hawks] is extremely swift, rapid and violent in every way."
Hawks are known to be very territorial and aggressive. They will fiercely protect their nests, especially when young are present. Their hooked beaks make for sharp weapons to tear prey or predator apart.

Random OOC Note That I Feel I Should Say
This doesn't really need to be said, but I feel like I should say it anyway since it'll give me some peace of mind. Gavin was my first serious RP-breedable. When I won him from the first Ames flatsale, I honestly had no idea what I was doing. I was not used to RP, nor was I all that great at characterization. The crazy summer after I received Gavin was kind of a weird one for me, in a good way. I'd like to think I improved by leaps and bounds in my writing after that summer. However, once the summer was over and I'd gained a new knowledge of characterization and RP, I took a hard look at the characters I'd created for Ames. The character 'Remi,' was an indulgent semi-self-insertion product of my fledgling writing ability, so I got permission to scrap her in favor of a more interesting, better developed guardian OC. However, there are a few things that I've done with Gavin that I'm still headdesking over. Now that I know mostly what I'm doing and have done quite a bit more research on hawks, I'm faced again with the products of my early RPing ability. I just wanted to say I do realize that as of right now, Gavin hardly resembles a hawk, and that as he keeps growing I will slowly have him make the transition to the more dignified, aggressive personality of a hawk. Don't worry, the loveable Gavin won't disappear, but parts of his personality will shift to fit his blend.
I just felt the need to get that out, since everyone else seems to have really thought out their concepts when I spent a year floundering in the dark xD;;
