I'm appalled.
I just got back from the gym and whilst I was there, on the radio, I heard a cover of Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. I don't usually listen to mainstream radio stations so I don't know how old or indeed new this cover is but I don't care, all I care is that it was so bad it made me want to cry. I mean, how could they ruin such a fantastic song? It's a crime against humanity I swear.
Although I think it's new because some girls in my class who probably don't even know who Simon and Garfunkel are were singing it today, and I was very confused because of it. It now makes sense though. gonk
And also, does anyone else think that they've completely ruined the Band Aid song?
I hate covers. Do you?
[/end rant]

A cover was often a homage to a band you admire, in which case I have no problem with it.
But more often these days it's not the case stressed in fact the new act may not even have heard the origianl scream

The problem is there's too many shitty bands covering really good songs and trying to be "artistic" i.e. churn out mass-produced crap. It doesn't ruin songs, just perverts an aspect of them. Fortunately the original is always there.
Another thing that pissed me off was in the late 90s when it was hugely popular to sample classic rock in rap and hip hop. A lot of good songs got used for a lot of bad artists in that era.

******** Band Aid, have you heard what Gareth Gates did to Suspicious Minds? I'm still recovering from that two years later.

Maybe it's what you use when you're a little raw. On account of all the sex. You know, the lots of sex which ends up causing friction on your bits and pieces which makes them painful because they got used so much during all the sex. I blame Canada.

Sometimes cover versions are better than the original, most of the time they're worse and sometimes they ruin the song. It's just the way it goes. I think the new Band Aid is pretty close to being in the last category, it's the chorus, it's changed. If I were a musical person I might be able to explain how but as I'm not, it's just different... the tune has changed, or something like that. It just doesn't sound the same, sort of flatter. I don't know!
