It has recently occured to me, because of someone's join request, that perhaps a specific Steampunk Queries thread be set up.
If ou have any queries at all pertaining to Steampunk, just post them here, and [hopefully wink ] someone more knowledgeable will be able to provide and answer for you!
I assure you that you will not be judged no matter how silly your question seems, everyone has to start at noob-level sometime.

KumaBlind How can one become more acquainted with the concept of steampunk, excuse my asking. My suggestion would be to check out sites such as Brass Goggles and this one as well.. We can help as well, but frankly we'll do so better if you give us more direct queries. Otherwise we'll just bore you, most likely.

And I sincerely apologize for providing such a vague question.

Hmm....
Does the sub-culture steampunk have anything besides our lovely DIY clothing and fascination with all things past? No night clubs with this theme? No....events? If not, it saddens the Cheshire Cat and someone should immediately jump to it. If so...well I'd like to know what they are ^^ I'm all alone in my stempunk-ness in this section of the country T.T

Who would I query for permission to start a thread? I'm interested in starting one on Steampunk-themed anime [being as this is a site predominantly for the anime fan] such as Full Metal Alchemist and various Hayao Miyazaki films [Steamboy duly noted]. I'm also wondering if anyone would approve of the idea of a Victorian afternoon tea RPG in the Recreation subforum? I just thought those were good ideas but I generally prefer to ask permission before starting "official" threads in someone else's guild. pirate

Please, just throw them any which way you can! Although I'm not sure what you're talking about with 'official' threads, you can't exactly start an Official Victorial Tea Party RP!

Here is what I've always understood to be Steampunk. It's the idea of the future that people had in the fifties. That psuedo philosphical look into what's to be by basing it on what is. Nuclear power was meant to revolutionize the world, cars were to fly, houses were to serve you with robot maids and ovens that cook by themselves, and those pesky russians were american enemy number one. Technology got better, but nothing else was going to change.

Technology got better, but nothing else was going to change. Erm... I hate to say it, but you seem to have made some terrible mistake. Put simply, everything you just said is wrong. :/ For starters, Steampunk is set in the Victorian era (way before the 50s ><) usually in the British Empire but often USA and other palces too. As a genre, Steampunk is essentially Victorian science fiction (think Jules Verne) where steam powered machines are capable of going into space, and we have steam-powered rockets etc. There's a kind of hint in the Steampunk. You'd be best looking it up on wikipedia. If anything, what you're describing is retro sci-fi. Bad retro sci-fi. neutral

I based my opinion on lonny toons cartoons. Those days of the future deals. I understood the steam aspect, I just always thought they were one and the same. I guess I was mistaken, and judging by your tone, horribly so. Well, like you said, we all have to start somewhere. I'm not much for research, but if I mention it to my cousin she'll go OCD all over it then tell me about it nonstop as she looks up stuff on it. I might even get a few stories out of her.

Okay, I think I got it right this time. As I said before my cousin went nuts overnight and I have now been fully informed of my misjudgments in the genre. I've also been refered to a comic called Girl Genius (which she has stacks of) to get a rather entertaining view of it. I also got a good smack to the head for mentioning my whole 50's bit. Honestly, on retrospect, I'm not sure how I managed to mix them together. Course that could just be the sense knocked into my head talking.
