NANA (ナナ, NANA?) is a shōjo manga by mangaka Ai Yazawa, serialised in Cookie published by Shueisha, which tends to print more mature shōjo titles. The first twelve volumes of the series have cumulatively sold over 22 million copies. The manga derives its title from the name of the two main characters, both of whom are called Nana. What sets them apart, however, is the stark difference between their personalities. One Nana has a childlike innocence and tends to lose touch with reality, while the other is a strong, self-confident singer in a punk band.
NANA is presently being released in North America by Viz Media in Shojo Beat magazine. It will end its serialization in the August 2007 issue of Shojo Beat, being replaced by Honey and Clover. It will continue, however, to be released in tankoubon(graphic novel format). The manga has also been adapted into a highly successful live-action movie with a sequel released on December 9, 2006, and an anime adaptation that premiered on April 5, 2006.

Plot synopsis
Nana Osaki is a punk singer who wants to debut as soon as possible to leave her ex-boyfriend, Ren Honjo, behind. Nana and Ren were members of the same group, and lived together as lovers in an apartment. When Ren was offered a chance to debut in Tokyo as a replacement member of the popular band TRAPNEST (TRANES for short), Nana had to choose between either going with Ren and being his stay-at-home girlfriend, or remaining with her own band. Realizing that following Ren would mean giving up her own dream to be a singer, she chooses to cultivate her own band, BLACK STONES (BLAST for short).
Nana Komatsu, the other Nana, is called Hachi by everyone in the manga after she met Nana Osaki (as explained in the manga, to avoid confusion of their names). Nana described Hachi as a little puppy, very loyal to other people but demanding much of their attention. ("Hachikō" is the name of a famous dog in Japan, while, appropriately, "hachi" is the word for "eight" in Japanese, while "nana" is the word for "seven".) She grew up in a sheltered suburban lifestyle in which she was treated as a child for much of her life. With a habit of falling in love at first sight, Hachi has always depended on other people to help her, especially her high school friend Junko Saotome. However, Junko eventually had to leave Hachi to attend a selective art design college in Tokyo. Hachi desperately wanted to follow Junko to Tokyo, but had no means in which to support herself there. However, after working hard on her own, she was finally able to move there as well. Nana had a boyfriend at that time, called Shoji Endo.
Nana and Hachi meet in a train by chance, and after a string of coincidences, they come to live together in an apartment numbered 707. Despite having contrasting characters and ideals, the Nanas like and respect each other.
While the BLACK STONES begin to gain popularity at live gigs, other issues need resolving. After discovering the past story of Ren and Nana, Hachi invites Nana to the TRAPNEST concert in the hope that the couple will reunite. Nana accepts the invitation, but she goes with the determination of tying up her feelings for Ren once and for all. However, things go a little differently, and with some help from their mutual friend Yasu, Ren and Nana get back together.
Though Nana's romance with Ren has been rekindled, Hachi's own lovelife is in shambles. She discovers that Shoji has been cheating on her with Sachiko, one of his coworkers. Hachi ends their relationship, saying that she never wants to see Shoji again.
Nana introduces Hachi to Takumi Ichinose, her favorite member of Ren's band, TRAPNEST. The two begin a romantic relationship, though it isn't an ideal romance. Hachi only sees Takumi when he has time off from touring and doing work for Trapnest. It seems to be purely physical, with Hachi aware of the fact that she doesn't really know Takumi as anything other than an iconic guitarist, and that he is notorious as a ladies' man. At the same time, the guitarist of BLACK STONES, Nobuo "Nobu" Terashima, declares his love for her. Hachi is torn between her love for Nobu and her relationship with Takumi. In the end she chooses Nobu, and splits up with Takumi over the phone – although Takumi doesn't realise it.
For a while Hachi and Nobu enjoy a happy, loving relationship – they understand each other and have fun together. Then, Hachi finds out she's pregnant. Unable to bring herself to abort and knowing that it must be Takumi's, she becomes listless and unhappy. Takumi returns, makes the discovery, and challenges Nobu – he'll take care of Hachi and the baby no matter who turns out to be the father. Hachi, thinking of her child's future, knows that while she loves Nobu, he can't support her. When Takumi offers to marry her, she accepts.
Hachi leaves the apartment she shares with Nana and she regrets it, but she can't bring herself to say it directly. Nana is also unable to express her feelings about the separation, though a marriage proposal from Ren offers hope for the future. Though the two friends are far apart, their thoughts remain with each other.
During this time, Blast's popularity continues to rise. However, with this rise, both its members and some of their fans felt that Blast's music have become too commercialized. A tabloid magazine, Search, first zeroes in on Ren's and Nana's relationship. When their photographer managed to obtain photos of Ren and his bandmate Reira (Named after the song Layla) together, the editor sends them over to Nana. To avoid the leak, Takumi decided to reveal his relationship with Hachi and to register their marriage immediately. Meanwhile, both Nobu and Yasu got into relationships with actresses managed by their company.
Still not giving up, Search then decides to focus on Nana's past. They've established that the mother of one of Blast's fans, Misato Uehara, is Nana's mother too. Meanwhile, they've dug up that the surname of her birth father may be Tsuzuki, and Mai Tsuzuki (the "fake" Misato Uehara) apparently has something to hide; she has expressed her wish that Misato and Nana not meet.
The story is to be continued in upcoming chapters.

Characters
The two main characters are the two Nanas: Nana Osaki, a punk-rock singer with a style to match, and Nana Komatsu, also known as Hachi, a small-town girl who moves to Tokyo to start a new life. They meet on a train, and their destinies are sealed. VIZ Media, the English translator of the manga, often refers to the girls as "Nana O." and "Nana K."
Other important characters include Hachi's friends and ex-boyfriend, the members of Nana's band, and the members of the band TRAPNEST.
Black Stones
Black Stones - normally shortened to Blast (ブラスト, Burasuto?) - is a popular punk band within the series. Ren was once a member of the group, but, after his departure to join Trapnest, they recruit a new member, Shin. They attract a large following, and ultimately sign a deal with Gaia Records.
Nana Osaki (大崎 ナナ, Ōsaki Nana?) is a fictional character in the manga/anime series Nana, by Yazawa Ai. She's the titular "Nana" of the series, along with Nana Komatsu.
To disambiguate between the girls, the English-language publisher of the manga, VIZ Media, uses Nana O. to refer to Nana Osaki.
Information
Name: Nana Osaki Occupation: Musician Gender: Female Born: March 5, 1981 Family: Misuzu Osaki (mother), Miyuki Osaki (grandmother (also foster mother), deceased), Misato Uehara (half-sister) Portrayed by: Mika Nakashima (film), Paku Romi (anime series), Anna Tsuchiya (anime series singing voice), Minagawa Junko (video game)
Character History
Nana O. was born March 5, 1981 in Meguro, Tokyo. She is the illegitimate daughter of Misuzu Ozaki, who left Nana in the care of her grandmother when she was four years old. Nana has not seen her mother since, and has thus forgotten what she looks like. Nana's grandmother, Miyuki, was very strict, and forbade her from wearing the colors pink and red because she did not want Nana O. to "tempt" men and become like her mother.
Nana O., however, had a rebellious streak. In high school, she was friendless until she met Nobuo Terashima, who introduced her to punk music and bands such as The Sex Pistols. She was falsely accused of prostitution and was expelled when she didn't deny the charges. Nana O. soon regretted her decision; she believes that the accusations led to her grandmother's fatal illness. However, as a present to herself, Nana bought her first red dress.
Nana O. wore the red dress to a punk concert with Nobu, where she first laid eyes on Ren Honjo. Nana was instantly captivated by him, and accepted Ren's offer when he asked her to join the band he was starting with Nobu and their friend Yasu.
As the lead singer of the band Black Stones (Blast, for short), Nana gained a rabid following of fans in her hometown. She developed a typically "cool" appearance, wearing the punk fashions of Vivienne Westwood and getting a lotus tattoo on her arm. She also moved in with Ren, and the two shared an intense romance until Ren told her that he had been offered a big record deal and would be leaving Blast to play with the band Trapnest in Tokyo. Though Ren and Nana still loved each other, they believed that a long distance relationship would be pointless. Nana proudly refused to abandon her own musical career to follow Ren; thus, their relationship ended.
Determined to "polish the shards of her dreams" and become a successful musician, Nana moved to Tokyo and re-formed Blast with Nobu, Yasu, and a new bassist, Shin. She also befriended Nana Komatsu, a kind-hearted but scatter-brained girl who, like Nana Osaki, wished to fulfill her dreams in Tokyo. The two Nanas shared an apartment (numbered 707, "Nana" being the Japanese word for seven) and became quite close despite their different personalities and aspirations. Nana gave Nana Komatsu the nickname "Hachi," which was adopted by their mutual friends. Nana also became fiercely protective of Hachi, going so far as to physically threaten Hachi's philandering boyfriend, Shoji. However, Nana is also somewhat possessive of Hachi, and feels jealous when anyone appears to be taking "her" Hachi away.
Hachi helped reunite Nana with her first love by inviting her to attend a Trapnest concert. At first Nana turned her down, but eventually gave in and agreed to go. For the first time in two years, Nana saw Ren in person. Ren saw her too, and they rekindled their romance that night. Nana thanked Hachi by introducing her to Trapnest's guitarist, Takumi, whom Hachi idolized. However, Takumi's cold "playboy" personality put doubts in Nana's mind, and she wondered if he was a suitable partner for her friend.
As the story progresses, Blast gets a record deal at Gaia Records and is quickly thrust into the public spotlight. Nana has trouble coping with the paparazzi, especially when tabloids print stories about Ren's possible affairs and probe into the location of her long-absent mother. Though Ren proposes to Nana and asks her to move in with him, their relationship is often volatile and Nana wonders if it will last. Nana also feels Hachi slipping away, since she has moved in with her now-husband, Takumi, and rarely sees her. Nana hopes to reconnect with Hachi, and their time in apartment 707 remains special in her heart.
Subsequently, both Nanas manage to catch up, first during Layla's birthday party and later, after Hachi's official engagement to Takumi, which Nana compared to as becoming "the wife of an underworld leader".
Later in the series, it is revealed out that Nana's mother is actually alive, and her whereabouts are exposed by a magazine called Search, which had previously exposed Ren and Nana's relationship to the public. It turns out that Nana's mother had actually maintained a fairly normal lifestyle and even had a child of her own, Misato Uehara. The Misato that the band knew was really Mai Tsuzuki, who borrowed Misato's name to feel like Nana's real little sister. Mai was the grandaughter of a man who was a lover of Nana's grandmother, and subsequently reading her grandfather's diary became a fan of Blast and Nana. The real Misato has an incredible likeness to Nana, and when she finds out that her mother abandoned her idol, she flees.
It is hinted at that Nana disappears and is never seen again, throughout many manga chapters. She is seen, though, with long blonde hair, while there are many rumours and speculations that she is dead. A mysterious person sends Hachiko pictures of her singing, with the Ren lotus still on her arm. And Hachiko exclaims and breaks down crying, because she always believed that her friend wasn't dead, and that she waited for the day for her and Ren to be reunited again.
Notes
*She may have gotten her lotus tattoo because of Ren (Ren is a Japanese name for lotus).
*Her name is written in katakana, a contrast to Komatsu's (which is in kanji with the second one being a symbol of repetition for kanji).
*She has been on the cover of every volume of the manga series. Also, the covers depict her activities with Hachi, which includes meeting her in apartment 707, shopping and watching a movie, among others.
*Coincidentally, the favourite designer of Mika Nakashima, the singer/actress who portrayed Nana in the live-action movies, is also Vivienne Westwood. Nakashima also became good friends with Yuna Ito, the actress portraying Layla (Reira Serizawa), which is ironic, considering that in the manga series, Nana actually dreaded having Layla around, as she felt that Layla was too cute for her comfort.
*For her portrayal of Nana in the anime, Romi Park won the "Best Main Character (female)" award at the first "Seiyu Awards". Also, at the same ceremony, Aya Hirano, who voiced Layla, received the "Best Newcomer (female)" award (though for her role as Suzumiya Haruhi), while Akira Ishida, who voiced Shin, received the "Best Supporting Character (male)" award (though for his role as Athrun Zala).

Nobuo Terashima (寺島伸夫, Terashima Nobuo?) a.k.a. Nobu (ノブ, Nobu?) He is the guitarist of Blast; attended the same high school as Nana Osaki. He is friendly and optimistic, but at times, he tends to miss the focus of conversations around him. Before Nana's "smoking ban", he's the only non-smoking member of Blast. But, his poor threshold for alcohol meant that he leaked many secrets while he's drunk (most notably, about Nana and Ren's relationship to Shin). Like Yasushi, Nobu comes from a rich family (his parents own an inn). Despite this, he is still very passionate about music, even sharing Osaki's dream of making it big with a band one day.
Shinichi Okazaki (岡崎真一, Okazaki Shin'ichi?) a.k.a. Shin (シン, Shin?) He is the bass player of Blast. The youngest member of the band, he is 15 years old and from a dysfunctional family. He moonlights as a male prostitute, with Reira being one of his "clients." Among other things, he's an expert mahjong player, and a confidant of Nobu. He's also the only member of Blast who smokes "Black Stones" besides Yasu.
Yasushi Takagi (高木泰士, Takagi Yasushi?) a.k.a. Yasu (ヤス, Yasu?) He plays drums and is the leader of Blast. He dated Reira in high school. He is also a lawyer, despite his "scary" appearance (clean shaven head, many earrings and dark glasses). He's a big brother figure for Nana, and sometimes Nobu. He acted as Nana's "guardian" when she first arrived in Tokyo. Also, he's the oldest member of Blast, which Nobu sometimes make fun of (by calling him "old man"). His favorite cigarette brand is "Black Stones", from which the band got their name.

Trapnest
Trapnest or Tranes (トラネス, Toranesu?) for short, is a popular band in the manga. Nana wants her own band to overtake Trapnest as the leading one in Japan.
Ren Honjo (本城蓮, Honjō Ren?), also known simply as Ren (レン, Ren?) is a fictional character in the manga/anime series Nana (manga), by Yazawa Ai.
Character
Ren was an orphan who was abandoned outside a port warehouse as soon as he was born. According to Nobuo Terashima, the incident was even reported in the news. Subsequently, he stayed at the same orphanage as Yasushi. After Yasu was adopted by the Takagis, Ren frequently visited his friend, so much so that Yasu's foster mother offered to adopt him, an offer which he refused.
Later, he formed a band, Blast, with Yasu as leader/drummer, himself as bassist, Nobu as guitarist and Nana Osaki as lead vocals. He also fell in love with Nana. (Like his idol, Sid Vicious, Ren wears a a chain with a lock around his neck that has the initial, "R" on it, to which only Nana has the key.) Blast was moderately successful in their town, but Ren doubted that they would make it big. He then joined Trapnest as a guitarist. Their leader, Takumi Ichinose, is a good friend of Yasu as well. As he left Blast, he also broke up with Nana.
After Hachi (Nana Komatsu) learnt about his relationship with Nana, she invited Nana to Trapnest's concert back in her hometown. The couple made up, but Nana promised Ren that Blast would become more popular than Trapnest; their new bassist, Okazaki Shinichi, wanted to surpass Ren himself.
Although the couple had made up, Ren was still afraid that Yasu may become his rival for Nana. Also, Nana was uncomfortable with Trapnest's vocalist, Layla (Reira Serizawa), who seemed to be interested in Ren as well. To make matters worse, a tabloid magazine, SEARCH, was determined to expose the couple's relationship, as Blast's popularity had been rising steadily.
Personality
Beneath his idol image, Ren actually has problems of his own. He's addicted to drugs, much like his idol Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. As leader, Takumi knew about this and warned him of the consequences. However, other than that, he tolerated Ren's practise. However, Ren has been trying to quit his habit, cold turkey style.
On matters concerning the band, he trusts Takumi completely. Using the series' running gag of comparing Trapnest to an army, he said, "We (Trapnest) do not need soldiers who won't fight alongside Takumi."
However, he could also be playful, frequently teasing Nana and Layla. Another gag in the series is that in front of Nana, he would purposely get intimate with Shin.
Notes
In the PS2 game, he's voiced by Takahiro Sakurai.
In the anime, he's voiced by Kiuchi Hidenobu
In the first live-action movie, he's portrayed by Ryuhei Matsuda.

Reira Serizawa (芹澤レイラ, Serizawa Reira?), also known simply as Reira (レイラ, Reira?) is a fictional character in the anime/manga series Nana by Ai Yazawa.
Character
Although her name is often transliterated as "Reira", her actual name is "Layla", after Eric Clapton's famous song of the same name. She is half-American, half-Japanese, and is the lead singer of Trapnest. She also penned some of their songs.
Layla's friendship with her band comes all the way back to her high school days, with Takumi Ichinose and Naoki Fujieda. She's a carefree girl, although she could be sensitive at times. She was in a relationship with Yasushi Takagi, the future leader of Blast, but it didn't last.
Within Trapnest, she has at times expressed interest in both Takumi and Ren Honjo, drawing the ire of Nana Osaki. To make matters worse, the tabloid magazine, SEARCH mailed to Nana photographs of Ren and Layla together. To stop the magazine from publishing the photos, Takumi decided to reveal his relationship with Hachi (Nana Komatsu), who initially was suspicious of Layla as well.
On top of all this, she's also in love with Blast's young bassist, Shinichi Okazaki. Knowing that the teen was underage, Takumi warned both parties to think of the possible consequences; however, the two kept on meeting as lovers. In the end, they broke up. It is clear that they loved each other a lot, but it's unknown whether they will date again in the future, when their relationship would not be as risky.
Personality
To fans, Layla is the archetypal idol: beautiful, charming and possessing a good voice. However, to her circle of friends, she's probably as well known for throwing silly tantrums, and making silly demands, as well as the qualities listed above. Together with Naoki, she's Trapnest's main source of laughter.
When Takumi became linked with Hachi, Layla ran out of the recording room throwing a fit . However, it seemed to have cooled, seeing that she personally invited Hachi to her birthday party. As for Ren and Nana, Layla has the thought that Nana had misunderstood her; during a long distance call over to the UK, Nana realized that Layla was in Ren's room at midnight (local time).
Seiyu and live-action actress
*In the anime, she's voiced by Aya Hirano. Her singing voice is provided by Olivia Lufkin, who is herself half American, half Japanese.
*In both live-action movies, she's portrayed by Yuna Ito, who interestingly is half-Japanese and half-Korean-American.
Notes
Through the filming of the movies, Yuna Ito became good friends with Mika Nakashima, the actress/singer portraying Nana Osaki, which is ironic, considering that in the storyline, Nana was not too fond of Layla.
Takumi Ichinose (一ノ瀬巧, Ichinose Takumi?) a.k.a Takumi (タクミ, Takumi?) The leader and bassist of Trapnest. He is quite handsome, and has a reputation of being a playboy. Despite his raw sexual charisma, Takumi can also be cold and controlling. His favorite brand of cigarettes is "Gitanes".
Naoki Fujieda (藤枝直樹, Fujieda Naoki?) He is the drummer of Trapnest. Like Nobu in Black Stones, he's the "clueless", loud-mouthed teenager of his band. As with the rest of his bandmates, he's a friend of Yasushi's. His background story, along with his friends', is featured in volume 9.

Komatsu Family
Nana Komatsu (小松 奈々, Komatsu Nana?) is a fictional character in the manga/anime series, NANA, by Ai Yazawa. She is the titular "Nana" of the series, along with Nana Osaki.
To disambiguate between the girls, the English-language publisher of the manga, VIZ Media, uses Nana K. to refer to Nana Komatsu.
Character
Komatsu came to Tokyo, looking to find her dream. Unlike Osaki, Komatsu came from a large and happy household, though her childish outlook prevented her from living on her own initially. She's the middle child of three sisters.
Her chance encounter with Osaki began a friendship which changes Komatsu's life forever. She is introduced to Osaki's band, Black Stones, and their members (Nobuo Terashima and Yasushi Takagi initially). She later even helps "Blast" to find their bassist, by drawing a poster to advertise the vacancy. Much to her surprise, she also discovers that the members of Blast were friends with the members of Trapnest, a popular rock band of which she's a very big fan. After learning of Osaki's breakup with Honjo Ren, she helps the two to reconnect after realizing that they were still very much in love with each other.
In the early stages of the manga, Nana was dating Shoji Endo, until he cheated on her with Sachiko, a co-worker at the restaurant where he works. Even though they had broken up, they still had some feelings for each other, as shown in their meeting after Komatsu entered an engagement with Takumi.
After Shoji, Komatsu found herself caught between two men: Takumi Ichinose, the leader of Trapnest, and Nobuo, the guitarist of Blast (Osaki's band). Komatsu discovers she is pregnant, and although she loves Nobuo, she realizes that Takumi would be in a better position to care for her and her unborn child. Her child would be named Sachiko but in the end turned out to be Satsuki.
She is now the wife of Takumi (initially in name only, for Takumi delayed their wedding because of Oosaki's engagement to Ren) and expecting a child. Her married name throughout the series is Nana Ichinose (一ノ瀬 奈々, Ichinose Nana?). She hopes that she will be able to live happily. Her nickname is "Hachi" - a shortened version of Hachikō because she always tries to be kind and faithful to her friends, like the dog from the Hachikō legend. (Hachi means eight in Japanese, and the kanji for seven can be pronounced as 'nana'. This also clears up confusion between the two Nanas.) A running gag in the series is for Hachi to suddenly sprout a pair of dog-like ears and a tail whenever she's very happy.
With the reporters of SEARCH (a paparazzi magazine) snapping photos of Ren and Reira together alone, Takumi decided to do some manipulating by revealing his relationship with Komatsu to SEARCH, who decided to run that news instead. As such, the couple were formally married.
However, trouble was brewing. SEARCH's photographer decided to show Hachi photos of Nana's birth mother. Hachi then travels to Osaka to uncover the truth for herself.
Personality
As noted above, due to her sheltered raising Nana Komatsu is initially a rather childish and self-absorbed person. She relied heavily on Saotome Junko, a high school friend of hers.
When it comes to relationships, Hachi has fallen in (and out of) love many times. The first man she ever slept with was Asano Takashi, who was a lot older than her. During a chance encounter in Tokyo, she comically warned him not to cheat again. However, like her subsequent exes, she could only forget about him totally after being together with another guy (in this case, Shouji). Though capable of great acts of kindness and caring for her friends, and even strangers, Hachi tends to be very self-absorbed at times failing to take into consideration the feelings of others. Though her friends care for her deeply, they sometimes seem to think of her as burdensome as well.
Voice actors and live-action actresses
*In the PS2 game, she's voiced by Rumi Shishido.
*In the anime, she's voiced by Midori Kawana, alias KAORI.
*In the first live-action movie, she's portrayed by Aoi Miyazaki. Since Miyazaki turned down the offer to appear in the sequel, Yui Ichikawa replaced her as Hachi.
Notes
*The covers of the manga series depict her activities with Oosaki, which includes meeting her in apartment 707, shopping and watching a movie, among others. Also, she does not appear on the cover of volume 1, which is her only absence so far.
*Her birthday is on 30 November, 1980 (She celebrated her 21st birthday on 30 November 2001, which is featured in volume 16.)
Nami Komatsu (小松奈美, Komatsu Nami?) Hachi's younger sister, and the youngest in the Komatsu household, she has the appearance of a ganguro girl because of her suntan and bleached hair. Nami is very outgoing and loud, and is a Trapnest fan.
Nao Komatsu (小松奈緒, Komatsu Nao?) Hachi's older sister, who looks quite a bit like Natsuko. She is married, but still lives near the Komatsu family home.
Natsuko Komatsu (小松奈津子, Komatsu Natsuko?) Hachi's mother. Kind and understanding, she is a model mother to her daughters, and Nana Osaki considers Natsuko to be cool. Hachi, however finds it weird since she thought that her family is nothing but 'normal.'

Crew members of Blast
Ginpei Shiroboshi (諸星銀平, Shiroboshi Ginpei?) Blast's manager. He talks in a very feminine way, and he also has an interest in Yasu.
Mai Tsuzuki (都築舞, Tsuzuki Mai?) / "Misato Uehara" (上原美里, Uehara Misato?) An ardent fan of Blast since its inception, Misato loves Nana and has befriended the band. However, "Uehara Misato" is not her true name. Misato/Mai claims that a fortune teller told her that if she used the name "Uehara Misato" she could become closer to Nana, but may have actually chosen it because it's the name of Nana's half-sister. Mai later joins the staff at Gaia, Blast's record label. She came to know about Nana and Blast when she read her grandfather's diary and discovered that he and Nana's grandmother were once lovers. Recent chapters reveal that Mai may actually have a secret she prefers not to reveal since the tabloids have discovered Nana's father's surname may actually be "Tsuzuki", which would imply that she, like Uehara Misato, is Nana's half-sister.

Acquaintances of Hachi
Junko Saotome (早乙女淳子, Saotome Junko?) Hachi's sensible, no-nonsense best friend. Junko is much more emotionally mature than Hachi, and often pushes her to be more independent and responsible. She's the host of the omake (bonus) section at the end of each manga volume, reading fan mail and displaying fan art. She's often called "Jun-chan" by Hachi.
Kyosuke Takakura (高倉京助, Takakura Kyosuke?) Junko's boyfriend, who currently shares an apartment with her. He's also good friends with Hachi and Shoji. His laid-back attitude to life may deem him a slacker in the eyes of many, but he's actually quite perceptive, though he coddles Hachi more than Junko would like.
Shoji Endo (遠藤章司, Endō Shōji?) He is Hachi's ex-boyfriend. He is a struggling art student and works as a waiter. He met Hachi through his old friend Junko, and Hachi originally moved to Tokyo to be closer to him. However, their relationship gradually cooled and he cheated on her with Sachiko, a co-worker and classmate. He leaves Hachi for Sachiko.
Takashi Asano (浅野崇, Asano Takashi?) Hachi's first lover. A handsome, older, married man, Asano carried on a secret affair with Hachi that ended when he was abruptly transferred to Tokyo. Though Hachi believed that she was in love with him, she made the painful realization that he saw her as merely a "fling". Hachi encounters him again in Tokyo and, after resolving her own personal issues with him, tells him to stop cheating on his wife.

Others
Chikage Fujimoto (藤本千景, Fujimoto Chikage?) She is the real Misato's friend, a Blast and Shinichi's fan. She was among the trio selected to represent Kansai at Blast's special fan gathering.
Koichi Sato (佐藤公一, Satō Koichi?) A waiter at the Jackson's Burger restaurant. He is friendly with Hachi, Junko, and Shoji, who curiously address him by his full name. Misato Uehara (, Uehara Misato?) (real Misato Uehara) Nana Osaki's half-sister, who appears before Nana at a special "thank you" concert for Blast's fans. She is unaware of her true relationship with Nana. Mai has said that it is not a good idea for Nana and Misato to become too close, though the reason why she has said this has not been disclosed. Misato bears a striking resemblance to Nana.
Miu Shinoda (篠田美雨, Shinoda Miu?) / Myū A morose actress who shares a boarding house with Blast and Yuri. She is older than she looks (27), and her name is often mispronounced "Myū" by Nobu. Miu wears long sleeves to hide the scars on her arms from self-mutilation. She is currently dating Yasu. Also, in volume 11 (the volume where she first appears), it's shown that she's a very good mahjong player. (She claimed that she learnt her skills by having special training for her role in a mahjong movie as a nameless rival.)
Sachiko Kawamura (川村幸子, Kawamura Sachiko?) Shoji's sweet-natured girlfriend. She works at the same restaurant as Shoji. Early on in the manga, Hachi once dreamt of Shoji two-timing her with a buxom, Prada-loving city girl named Sachiko (she thought of the name randomly). Ominously, it later turned out to be true, though the real Sachiko is nothing like "virtual" Sachiko. Interestingly, Hachi also plays with the idea of naming her unborn daughter Sachiko.
Satsuki Ichinose (一ノ瀬皐, Ichinose Satsuki?) The daughter of Nana Komatsu. Not much known about her, and she makes only a few appearances later in the series. When she appears, she is 6 years old (presumably showing the future outlook of the story). During her pregnancy, Hachi and Takumi unofficially called her 'Sachiko'. It is not known if she is truly Takumi's or Nobu's child, but in the anime she bears a striking resemblance to Takumi, with black hair and hazel eyes.
Yoshiyuki Arai (新井良行, Arai Yoshiyuki?) Search magazine's second editor. He has already been married for 2 years.
Yuri Kousaka (香坂百合, Kōsaka Yuri?) / "Asami Matsumoto" (松本朝海, Matsumoto Asami?) A giggly, giddy AV idol (porn star) who shares a boarding house with Blast and falls in love with Nobu. Yuri was a teenage runaway before she starred in adult videos, and she has financial problems due to her sleazy manager and her own fickle nature. Her real name is "Asami Matsumoto".

NANA has been made into a movie which was released on September 3rd, 2005. The movie stars Mika Nakashima as the punk star Osaki Nana, and Aoi Miyazaki as Hachi (Komatsu Nana). The DVD edition was released on March 3rd, 2006. The film did quite well at the Japanese box office, staying in the top 10 for several weeks.
Main Cast
Nana Komatsu (小松奈々 Komatsu Nana): Aoi Miyazaki Nana Osaki (大崎ナナ Ōsaki Nana): Mika Nakashima Ren Honjo (本城蓮 Honjō Ren, レン Ren): Ryuhei Matsuda Takumi Ichinose (一ノ瀬巧 Ichinose Takumi, タクミ Takumi): Tetsuji Tamayama Shinichi Okazaki (岡崎真一 Okazaki Shin'ichi) a.k.a. Shin: Ken'ichi Matsuyama Nobuo Terashima (寺島伸夫 Terashima Nobuo) a.k.a. Nobu (ノブ): Hiroki Narimiya Reira Serizawa (芹澤レイラ Serizawa Reira): Yuna Ito Sachiko Kawamura (川村幸子 Kawamura Sachiko): Saeko
Theme Songs
In addition to creating a NANA craze throughout Asia, the movie also helped launch Mika Nakashima to the peak of her career as she released the single "GLAMOROUS SKY" under the name NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA. The single created topicality with its special collaboration between Nakashima, HYDE (who wrote the song), and NANA author Yazawa Ai (who wrote the lyrics). The single became Nakashima's first number one single on the ORICON Charts.
The movie also helped promote another artist, Yuna Ito, who starred in the movie as TRAPNEST vocal REIRA, released her debut single "ENDLESS STORY," the insert song of the movie, under the name REIRA starring YUNA ITO. The single ranked second on the ORICON charts, next to Nakashima's "GLAMOROUS SKY," and made Yuna Ito one of the most successful debuting artists of 2005.

Movie Sequel
NANA 2, the sequel to the first movie, was announced right after the first debuted. However, on August 4, 2006, Toho stated that shooting will begin mid-September and that the movie is supposed to be released on December 9, 2006. Aoi Miyazaki and Ryuhei Matsuda will not be reprising their respective roles as Nana Komatsu and Ren Honjo; as such, their roles have been assigned to Yui Ichikawa and Nobuo Kyou, respectively.
Two new singles will be released under NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA and REIRA starring YUNA ITO. Mika Nakashima is one of the confirmed cast members as well as Yuna Ito, who had recently confirmed that she would reprise her role as Reira in the upcoming movie.
However, the sequel was a let-down for fans and company, it only peaked #4 at the Japanese Movie Rankings, and had much more bad press than any good. Critics have claimed that the exchange of both superstars Aoi Miyasaki and Ryuhei Matsuda were two reasons.
The movie had its international premiere in New York City on December 15, 2006. It opened for a single showing at the IFC in Soho. Both Mika Nakashima and Yui Ichikawa were present.
Main Cast
Nana Komatsu (小松 奈々 Komatsu Nana): Yui Ichikawa Nana Osaki (大崎 ナナ Ōsaki Nana): Mika Nakashima Ren Honjo (本城 蓮 Honjō Ren, レン Ren): Nobuo Kyou Takumi Ichinose (一ノ瀬 巧 Ichinose Takumi, タクミ Takumi): Tetsuji Tamayama Shinichi Okazaki (岡崎 真一 Okazaki Shin'ichi) a.k.a. Shin: Hongo Kanata Nobuo Terashima (寺島 伸夫 Terashima Nobuo) a.k.a. Nobu (ノブ): Hiroki Narimiya Reira Serizawa (芹澤 レイラ Serizawa Reira): Yuna Ito
Theme Songs
NANA 2 once again featured the two artists Mika Nakashima and Yuna Ito, releasing songs under the names NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA and REIRA starring YUNA ITO respectively. NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA's new single, "Hitoiro," which featured TAKURO of GLAY as composer and NANA author Yazawa Ai as the lyricist again, did not do as well as its predecessor "GLAMOROUS SKY," peaking at only #5 on the ORICON charts. Two weeks after the release of the single, however, NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA released her first and last album, THE END, which managed to rank at #2 on the ORICON charts.
REIRA starring YUNA ITO's "Truth" had no more luck than Nakashima's new single, ranking in only at the tenth place on the ORICON charts. The music video of the single was filmed in Scotland and used as scenes of the movie. Neither singles were as record-setting as their predecessors.
