Hi, guys. I know I'm not really an active poster in this guild, but I do come here often and I have been reading everyone else's posts and reading the tutorials posted in the sub forums.

Any way, I've been practicing HTML for a while now and am working on a new website. I need a lot of help with buying a domain, picking a host and getting the site online.

Anyway, I was shopping for that type stuff today online, when I realized that, even though I feel moderately comfortable in my HTML skills, I could be so much better. I have about a week left with HTML and then I'll be working on XHTML then CSS. But I haven't forgotten the golden rule of learning: One step at a time.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to review my HTML site. Since it isn't an actual site yet and I am doing everything in HTML and nothing is being hosted then you would have to be willing to receive the html document and just open it in your browser. Which is something I am worried about, my site not displaying properly in different browsers.

If you could do this, and then let me know what you think of the overall layout and design--don't expect anything great. Its just a few HTML documents linked together with basic HTML linking techniques--then I would greatly appreciate it. Please feel free to criticize, review, and even flame the site as you want. All I really want is feedback so that I can find room to improve--thanks!

Thanks for the link, now that I know about this site, I will use it. But this isn't really what I was hoping for. I was hoping for someone to tell me what they think of the site layout--visually, user friendly--that type of thing. However, I just accidentally deleted a lot of the HTML document *How depressing....* so I have to redo it. When I am done I will repost it so that someone can look at it. Thanks.

Just to let you know, learning XHTML isn't much different at all from learning HTML, really. Take a look at http://www.w3schools.com/xhtml/xhtml_html.asp for a quick rundown of the differences between the two.

I'll look at it for you, too. What worries me, though, is that you said you did it all with HTML... Tables are icky. >_<

Yes, though they can be useful, CSS = life and it's easier than HTML. biggrin So I might switch your priorities to CSS then XHTML cause CSS is really simple, though it might seem daunting at first.

I'm going to have to agree to the first response, the Validator is one of the best ways to go.

Having someone experienced go through manually will be a plus though, as there are a lot of errors that Validation alone will overlook (such as unnecessary even though 'properly' written code.)

As far as hosting and whatnot, I'm going to recommend two webhosting companies owned by friends of mine..

1) Surnaturelle.net - is owned by a friend of mine of several years, she's got a lot of clients and does a very good job at keeping them happy. The server is her own though managed by a relative company, very fast and I haven't seen any problems with them.

Her cheapest package is 50 MB of storage space, and 1 GB of bandwidth at $13.50 (USD) a year with a domain (com, net, org) or $5.50 a year without.

2) Tehlove.org - Cheaper than Surnaturelle, the servers are very reliable (I've been a reseller with the same company she uses, so I definitely know), her service is very fast (I have a domain hosted by her).

Her cheapest plan is 350 MB of space, and 6 GB of bandwidth at $15 (USD) a year, including a free domain registration (com, net, org).

Both offer Cpanel and Fantastico, and both will do custom plans if you'd like.

Wow, I sound like an advertisement. Hope this helps at all.
