I am horrible at auditions. They are so awkward. Cold readings are the worst. I have no background on the scene or my character, my eyes read faster than my mouth will speak, and I generally end up completely and utterly destroying the performance (especially when reading Shakespeare eek ). I don't know how to prepare ahead of time. How do you prepare for auditions?

Take your time. Read the thing you are going to read over a couple of times and pick out little things in lines that you notice and perform it in that particular way. The director will notice this and then you'll have a better chance of being cast as whatever part. Also try walking in there knowing that you have this part and you are the person they came to see and that they should be intimidated by your talent. Instead of you being intimidated by them.

Depends on the audition.

Musical:
1. Warm up
2. Go over your song 2-3 times
3. If cold readings expected, pray your not first.
4. Look over the scene and decifer what your character is: age, gender, what they're trying to get out of the scene.
5. If dance audition, stretch, stretch, STRETCH!!!

Comedy/Tragedy:
Steps 3 & 4 only.

Thank you both for the advice. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to read it before my audition earlier today, but it will come in handy later on. Your comments were very insightful. I may never come to love auditions, but at least they'll get easier as time goes on. Thanks again for the help! smile

Sweet Jesus I hate cold readings. I did a cold reading from The Laramie Project and I honestly wasn't sure how much of my shakiness was acting and how much of it was jitters.

I have an audition for The Music Man tomorrow and I am trying to think positive. I will definately take Rameses's advice.

I just auditioned for the role of Liesl for The Sound of Music. I got a call back but I did not get the part. Oh well.

Auditioning is pretty scary, but I find it best to just stay calm. Don't think about what you are going to do or what others are doing. The more I think about the actual audition process the more nervous I become. I just set my mind on other things, just keep my mind blank- and go off instinct. surprised

I hate the before and after of auditions... but during I kinda love auditions.. epeically if your with a group and you have confidence... I'm not so knowing with musicals but for regular (or anyshows) I
A) Usually do phyiscal warmups
B) Do a verity of tongue twisters (To sit in solomn Silence)
C) And listen to mood music for whatever show...

That usually helps me out.

Well I would personally suggest any song sung by Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, becuase he has so much emotion in that musical, you could really show off how well you act while singing.

I love auditions when they're not for musicals. The only musical that I have tried out for so far, I froze up during my song and forgot the words (the musical director sat in the back and mouthed the words for me, and somehow I got through). I kind of like cold readings so long as I can practice it before hand with my fellow partners in crime. And I really love improv if I get a topic that I can go off of and I have a partner. Normally I can get the rest of the auditioners to start laughing.

My college holds auditions for all the shows this semester tonight and tomorrow. Two minutes to present two contrasting pieces in front of the two professor directors, and the nine student directors. And all their AD's. Gulp!
No, it'll go fine, I'm sure. There's no use in psyching myself out for no reason. They're not going to flat out tell you that you sucked.

What?! No!!! I'm sorry. I totally disagree. JCS and Oklahoma are totally two different genres. Yes JCS songs will show off acting, but not voice. At least not the type of voice needed for the roles in Oklahoma. I suggest looking into another Rogers and Hammerstein piece from another show they've done. Or something from a show that has just a similar sound. Like something from Camelot or something from West Side Story. Don't do a pop musical song for an audition for a classical musical show.

Well it depends...if you did do both then they can see your diversity and maybe if you didnt get the first you would be considered for the next play.

It's happened at my school alot...they'll see youare good at something else and ask you to be in the spring musical etc..

but alas...ive been out of HS for almost 3 full years.
