Verior made a point in the anime section of the guild that made me think~Verior Light, since the Death Note came into his possession, has suffered from a simply, yet extreme, god complex, in which the victim believes that they are, or they aim to be, a greater being than that of society. After giving up possession of the note, he was cured of this, as he no longer had the power, or the incentive to live the ideals he had as Kira, which he only came across by chance. One could say that Light was simply unlucky, as he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had he found the note at another time, he may not have begun to use it for mass murder, as the incentive, brought upon by violence and corruption, wasn't there. It was also Light's intelligence and curiosity that led to the birth of Kira, as he was curious if the note actually worked, and wanted to test it. In the end though, M.P.D. was not the problem, it was just that he had more power than he, or nearly any mortal person, could handle, so his downfall could only be explained as a result of bad luck and human nature, which is why one cannot truly blame him for what he would become.
I, for example, would use the DN to kill criminals, as Light did, and end up getting too deep into it too quickly. However, five years ago I would have used it to kill my family because they took away my puppy(childish drama FTW!). I didn't have the maturity to handle such power back then. Now that I'm older, I'm pretty sure it would result in, more or less, the same way.
As it stands, I don't think any of us normal people would have the mental capabilites to use the DN for an extended amount of time.

If I were to get a Death Note right now, knowing all I do about the series, I'd probably fling it to the ground, stomp on it several times, and burn it. Twice.

But were I to get one without any prior knowledge of it in any way, I really don't know what I'd do...
I'd probably be too scared to use it, and leave it where it was, or hide it (though isn't there a rule about keeping it and not using it? confused )... I don't think I'd be able to live with the guilt of killing anyone, good or bad. Plus, I'd probably screw things up within the first year, if not sooner. I'd be caught in a second...
It would be really rare, if not utterly impossible in real life, to have such a maddeningly analytical super genius as Light or L on hand.I'm sure it's not impossible for a person to be that smart (I'm sure it's unlikely, however), but it certainly would be strange in real life if so many things just fell into place for you. No one can really plan ahead THAT much, anticipate the actions of a completely different person so efficiently.
At least, I can't. sweatdrop
As Light says at a certain point in the series... He's the only one strong enough to use this book to make the world a "better" place.
I guess, in some ways, he's right.

If I remember correctly, it's that you have to use it within 200 and something days or its ownership passes on to somebody else, most likely the shinigami possesing it. During that time the shinigami possesing the notebook has to try everything possible to get you to use the notebook. In any instance, if I were to come across a Death Note, with formal knowledge of its powers and purpose, or not, I have analyzed that I would go insane with power, at least at this age and maturity level. I think I explained in a post of mine, prior to this one, that I would not, on the other hand, use the note to rid the world of any wrongdoers, specifically. I would, of course, have a certain favoritism in store for those who do not corrupt society. Anyway, my world would consist of a totally chaotic and incoherent system where only, if anything, the economic state of things would have improved. God, but there would be so much cruelty to be expected from me. I fear my kingdom.

I might not be able to use it successfully but I'd sure as hell die trying. |: I'd kill criminals as well, but even though I most likely wouldn't feel bad doing it (The way I see it, I don't even know who I'm killing, and I'm a b***h, so. xD) but I'd have issues getting all the information. Light had an upperhand for a lot of the time because he ended up in the police force and before that he was able to hack into it because his father was in the police force.
Most normal people would not have that much of an upper hand. :/
I'd probably go crazy eventually and start killing off my friends who suspected I was Kira but I wouldn't just not grab the opportunity if it presented itself. xD

Even if we were okay with killing all those people we wouldn't be able to avoid being caught like Light. Light was a genuis who was able to avoid L's traps among other things and he was even able to outsmart him.
If I came across the Death Note I wouldn't pick it up. Picking stuff off the street with your hands is bad! 3nodding

If I had gained possession of one, I'd be smarter about how I used it in the beginning. I would space out deaths over a longer period of time, killing less people, in different ways.
That way, it'd be harder to track me.
I also wouldn't kill criminals on the local news, because that pretty much pinpoints it to your region.

I agree with Captaincarnival's idea of keeping the killings random. I'd have the CIA looking for me, and I'm not nearly as cocky as Light. I'd keep the criminals in general, patternless areas. Screw challenging my opponent. Hide all the way!

Well, I don't think I'd ever go to the extremes of what Light went through, because I wouldn't have the courage to do something like that and if I hadn't even read DN then I probably wouldn't even think of killing criminals off and I wouldn't try to test it.
If I found I would either think it was a joke and write someones name in it accidently, for a joke, or just completely freak and think that I had to get this away from anyone who might want to use it and try to hide it somewhere.

if i knew everything about the series when i find the DN i would keep it hidden from everyone else so that it wont go into the wrong hands, or give it back to the shinigami if he/she did drop it by accident and if they didnt i would then keep it, because they might do it again. Then also try to be best friends with them ninja im not to sure what i would do with it if i didnt know the series, i might of just left the thing on the ground.

I'd have problems with the first kills...I could not be a killer. I have too much of a conscience. And I'm a chicken.
But, it would seriously screw with me long term if I actually could. One, I would get caught within the first few months, and two, being a ruthless murderer of that many people, believingI was saving the world, would mess me up completely.
