The sound of the crashing waves was what brought the lioness out this far from her usual roaming grounds. It was completely different from the home she had never really known. A nice salty breeze caused her to sneeze and giggle uncontrollably. Monifa'nkiruka was enjoying her solitude from her other half, Umasikini'mzaliwa.
They had been stalking for days, just outside of a certain pride she didn't know the name of. Why fight when you could love? It was so dull listening to Uma calculate and speculate over every minor detail. Finally, Monifa had shoved her up tight in her mind and gone on a little vacation for herself.
She left the cool water crash up on her paws, causing a small shiver to run over her body. The ocean was too cold for her to fully appreciate it. Usually she would go diving into the waves and letting it cool her down. She sighed forlornly. If she couldn't enjoy the water, she needed company to while away the hours. "Helloooo?"

In a shallow cave nearby, a huge shadow stirred. It was Mzimu, a jet-black lion who had called the sea his home for many years now. He wasn't too fond of visitors, but then, he had been feeling rather lonely since that anti-social Zizima had left along with the lovely Isilahi. Both of them were just trying to help, and although he ended up having a good time, he grew weary of their company fairly quickly. And now he kind of wanted it back.
At hearing the voice of a female nearby, he considered ignoring it, despite him wanting the company. It soon passed though as he slowly got to his feet and walked to the mouth of the cave. Before calling out, he sniffed the air in an attempt to locate her. Being blind from birth meant that his other senses had all had to compensate. It wasn't long before he was walking in her direction.

Her ears flicked in every direction, but all she could hear was the waves crashing on the sand and the gulls sing their high-pitched songs. She hated being only with Uma all the time. They never had fun anymore and she never got to keep any friends. Thinking that the beach was completely deserted, she sat down and allowed the sun to warm her blue fur.
It wasn't until the breeze stirred again that she caught the scent of someone else. It was a lion, but he had the sting of the salt as well, causing her to sneeze again. She tried to locate roughly where he was and looked in his general direction, completely unaware that he was blind much like herself. She wasn't sure if she should say anything. No words had been passed really, aside from her shout earlier. Was he friend or foe? "Hello," she asked softly.

When he had gotten to within a few feet of the voice, having heard it a second time, he sat himself down. He didn't like others to be aware of his disability immediatly, as he felt that they judged him because of it.
"Hello there." Mzimu called out finally, in the direction of the ocean. He knew that the female was sat more to the side of him than infront of him, but again, he wanted to make sure that the first thing she saw was not his milky-white eyes.

She moved towards the voice, able to pinpoint it better now that he had finally spoken. "I'm sorry if my call disturbed you. I'm not from around here, but wanted to smell the ocean breeze once without my annoying friend." She sat down near where he was, flicking her blue tail across the sand.

Mzimu shook his head. "Don't worry about it." At the mention of an annoying friend, the old lion let out a brief chuckle. "Thankfully I don't share in that problem. I live alone out here, in that cave." Saying that, he motioned towards his home, still completely unaware that the female could see it no better than he could. "The ocean is my oldest and dearest friend." He said after a short pause. "And there's nothing annoying about it."

Her maw curved in a smile. Normally she would be rough-handled for walking in on someone that didn't want company. Her joy lasted until he stated where his cave was. She couldn't really see it and said just as much, "I wish I could see it for myself. My sight left me when I was very young."

There was a very long silence after the female revealed her disability. All his life he had wondered if there were others like him, who had been born blind or had lost their sight later on in life. As a cub, his mother and the members of their Clan treated him exactly the same as they treated the other cubs, but he knew in himself that he was nothing like the other cubs.
As he reminisced, he completely forgot what had caused him to do so, until a large wave crashed against the nearby rocks, breaking his chain of thought. With a breif shake of his head and mane, he looked in the direction of the female. "I was born blind." He smiled a little, albeit solemnly. "Funny that we should meet like this, after so many years of me thinking that I was the only one."

She had a look of shock on her face when he shared the same disability with her. She clicked her mouth shut, but there was still sadness to her features. He had been blessed enough to never know what the world looked like before it was taken away. The plague had taken everything away from her; her home, her family, her eyesight. Her claws curled into the sand as she tried to control her anger, control Umasikini'mzaliwa from escaping.
"Monifa'nkiruka," she said quietly. She saw no harm in this lion. And actually found herself liking him because they had something in common. Perhaps friendship could be formed, so long as Uma stayed out of it.

"Monifa'nkiruka." He repeated, pronouncing it correctly. "That's a lovely name." With a small bow of his head, he decided to reveal his own name. "My name is Mzimu." He chuckled. "It's not quite as fancy as your name, but it'll do." Most Elas were given the surname of their mother, but because Mzimu was born of a couple who were from two different Clans, he wasn't allowed to take his mother's surname.
"Do you mind if I call you Monifa?"

"No, I don't mind at all, Mzimu." It sounded so weird to have another repeat her name. Her ears flicked in fear that this would bring about her other half. However, there was silence in her mind for once, nothing stirred. "Strange," she accidentally said out loud.

"Hm?" Mzimu tilted his head, wondering what it was that Monifa found strange. Since he was aware of the fact that she was blind, it certainly couldn't be anything she saw. And he couldn't hear anything that could be considered to be strange, so he was quite puzzled. "Is something wrong?"

She smiled, even though she knew he would never see it. Old habit die hard. "Nothing is wrong. I'm merely enjoying the silent company of the waves and yourself." She turned her head back out to the crashing water, unsure of how he'd take that.

"Oh, I see." Obviously he meant that as a figure of speech, not literally. "Well, the feeling is mutual." He said with a small smile, actually enjoying the company of another for a change. Having thought that he was the only lion in Africa who was blind, he felt somewhat comforted now knowing that someone knew exactly what he was going through. In some ways though, her blindness was worse than his, as hers had come later on in life. He was born blind, so he could barely even comprehend what he was missing, whereas Monifa knew all too well what she had lost.
"Do you find that some days are harder than others?"
