((This is what happens when one is dying of boredom... xd )) Story
Parallel to our own, there exists another world, traveling along the same timeline as ours. The only difference between these two worlds is that technology had never caught on in the other world, known as Arkanna. Here, faeries and other mythical creatures are real; and two opposing, yet complementary forces hold everything in equilibrium. The High Priestess-Oracle, as old as time itself, serves as the protector of the Orb, the symbol of the balance in that world.
However, a dark shadow stretched out its hand over this arcane world and upset the natural order; darkness sought to overcome light. With the threat of perpetual chaos looming over the horizon, it was decided that the Stones of Power - once secreted in the Mages' Tower in Khraal, the central kingdom - be sent to our world.
There are eight stones in all: one for each of six elements and six outer kingdoms, and one each for the two overall forces and two inner kingdoms.
When the time came, six unknowing teenagers - hereafter called Guardians - would find themselves in possession of the six elemental stones of power. Upon the gathering of all six, they would enter into Arkanna, and strive to reset the balance between the two forces of Light and Dark. There in that world, the search for the two Keepers and the struggle between light and dark - and the fate of Arkanna - would begin.
But when four of their own suddenly find themselves under the Shadow Lord's control? Are they strong enough to fight off his spell? Are their fellow Guardians strong enough to help them break free? The Keepers may have been found and the chances of success increase in the Guardians' favor...but it may very well be at the price of someone's life!
________________________
The Setting
The first confrontation between the Light (Guardians) and Shadow (Daemn) occurs on Earth, but the rest of the battles take place in the mystical world of Arkanna.
Just like our Earth of time long gone from memory, Arkanna consists of only one continent. Most of the population inhabit the main continent; almost no one has explored the outlying islands scattered along the coasts.
The mainland is roughly divided into nine territories. The first is the central kingdom, Khraal, governed and protected by the High Priestess-Oracle. Immediately outside its walls lie the Kingdoms of Eilran and Akhtai - light and darkness, respectively. The six other territories - or Outer Kingdoms - each represent a particular element, and are also under the protection of the High Priestess-Oracle.
To the northeast is Ignis, the Fire Kingdom. With the Indrae mountain range protecting the northern and western borders and the Lyr River to the south, Ignis's geography makes it a relatively safe haven against the recent Shadow Uprising.
Towards the great ocean in the south lies the Water Realm, Umilnae, and to its west, its sister, the Kingdom of Ice, Fioraln. While both are open to a nautical attack, each kingdom is surrounded by a magical wall created by Yumeru, and protecting them from land seiges is the Brenwood: a great, ancient forest that spans the entire width of the Southern region.
A three-day journey East from Eilran will take one to Zuryph, the Wind Country, and the neighboring territory of Earth, Tersish. They do well enough, despite the lack of protection provided by a mountain range or a forest like Brenwood.
Immediately West of Khraal lies the Lightning Kingdom, Krield. Abandoned now, the fortifications of its outer walls fallen and destroyed, it had the misfortune of being closest to what is now known as the Dunzuren - the self-made Kingdom of Shadow - and so was the first to be attacked. After the attack, a new forest, now called Sylvane - Forest of Silence - sprung up, separating Krield and Dunzuren from the rest of the land.

General Rules
1. Follow the Gaian and Guild rules
2. No god-modding and/or auto-hitting.
3. Romance will be allowed, but keep it PG-13
4. RP-ers may apply for a minimum of two characters, with at least one character being canon.
5. Keep swearing to a minimum, and only if it fits the situation and character (for example, Max does not swear or curse. If he does, then he's really pissed at something).
6. It cannot be stressed enough, but please be at least semi-literate. ESPECIALLY if you're applying for a canon character.
7. Please PM me if you will be unable to post for more than a week. If you fail to provide an excuse for non-activity, you will be removed from the character list and applications for your character - or characters - will be held, even though the RP is, in effect, closed.
8. If you have questions about the story, the setting, the characters, or anything else, please PM me. DO NOT post them in this thread. I'm trying to keep this as neat as possible.
9. In the character list below (updated whenever new roleplayers audition and are accepted), character text colors have been provided. You may use these or another color, provided you inform me first and they won't confuse fellow RPers.
_______________________
How To Join:
1. Make sure you've read the story and the setting. Familiarize yourself with the 'map' provided. Another thing, this is an AU RP - no bitbeasts and Beyblades.
2. Check the list of characters still needed. PM me with 'Orb of Balance' as the subject and stating which character/s you want. Please provide an RP sample at least 1 paragraph [consisting of 5-7 sentences] long.
3. There are some roles needed that can be filled by either a canon or an original character. If you're applying for such a role, include this in your PM and provide an RP sample as well. A list of all chat colors that are applicable to Gaia forums can be found here.

This RP won't be limited to just the characters mentioned here. Okay?) ________________________
Note:
So far, I can think of only two antagonists. If you'd like to be in the RP but have found no role that suits you, feel free to make up an antagonist, either from this dimension (Earth) or from Arkanna. If you wish for your character to be from Arkanna, the possible races are listed below:
1. Veypr - the Arkannian version of the vampire; doesn't really drink blood, but can be just as dangerous.
2. Faerie - there are four types: fire, air, ice, and water.
3. Anima - these are pretty much like shapeshifters, but they can change only into one of the following species: hawk, snake, wolf, fox and bat. The complete race name would be in the form of 'animal name anima'
4. Elf - three types: forest, mountain, and shadow
5. Avian - something like Hawkman from the comic books, but an adult of this species is only as tall as the largest bird known to modern man (a species of eagle, I believe).
If you don't see a race that suits you, PM me with any ideas for additional races. I'll consider them, and update this list when I decide to add them.
Only three more antagonists will be excepted. After that, this RP will be 'closed' and no new applications will be entertained, except in special cases (please see the 'General Rules, item #7'). Minor/supporting original characters will still be accepted, however, provided they don't last as long as the lead characters - they're either killed off or they leave or whatever at some point.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS CURRENTLY IN THE RP
Name: Keiko
Played by: flameangel_child524
Age: 18 years old
Gender: Female
Role: the Shadow Lord's right-hand hench...woman
Appearance: Keiko sports long, black hair often tied back in a ponytail or a braid; deep amethyst eyes; pale tan skin; and a slight build. She detests having to revert to her anima form, as she deems it a "show of cowardice and weakness", there are times when she must, in order to utilize her full abilities. However, she does so only partially, and so gains a pair of fox ears, and in some cases a tail. She has yet to revert fully, however, something she prides herself on. (illustration in progress)
Race: Part human, part fox anima
Personality: Keiko comes off as haughty and spiteful, and as the Shadow Lord's right-hand man - er, woman, she knows she has reason to be. Silent when she needs to be, and definitely deadly, she prides herself on never having let a 'target' escape.
Background/History: Keiko's father was a fox anima well-versed in the dark magicks, and one of Daemn - servents of the Shadow - who ferried their would-be Shadow Lord into 'our dimension'. Whilst here, he looked after the Shadow Lordling and made sure he did not meet with misfortune, not until he was old enough to fend for himself and, with time, discover his birthright as leader of the Daemn. During that time, he met and married a young woman. Who could have known that their union would bear such a one as Keiko?
When the girl was but 2 years old, her dear mother died. Her grieving father left Earth, taking the young halfling fox-child with him back to Arkanna. There she grew up, learning the dark side of elemental control - specifically fire and plant manipulation - an offshoot of Earth control.
Soon after she turned 16, Keiko's father disappeared without a trace, and she wandered on her own, honing her craft and her combat skills. A few months later, she recieved a strange telepathic message; The Shadow Lord has returned... it said. Though she knew not the voice, she knew it spoke the truth, and that it was meant for her to greet him. Something guided her towards Dunzuren and the Daemn's Keep - the large, dark castle where she was to reside along with the most select of the Shadow Lord's henchmen. She displayed her prowess in tracking, killing, and capturing various targets; the Dark One, pleased with this, soon awarded her the position of Commander-General of his hand-picked army, which she holds to this day.
Name: Fubuki Miki
Played by: BloodCountess_Di
Age: 17
Gender: female
Role: Light Keeper
Appearance: Miki is almost never seen without her smile. Interestingly enough, she, like Kai, possesses two-toned hair, in practically the same shade. Her pale slate-blue bangs frame her face perfectly, while the darker cobalt strands just brush the upper edges of her shoulder blades. These, too, serve to off-set her just slightly tanned skin and friendly deep brown eyes.
Race: Human
Personality: Quite mature for girls her age but often childish and bubbly. Although she grew up knowing of her social class and high status, it didn’t stop her from being nice to everyone. Having the Shinsen High School principal as her father tended to make some students dislike her for thinking she gets special treatment. But due to her friendly nature, she makes more friends than enemies.
Background/History: Miki was born into a rather rich family, with loving parents. Though an only child, Miki wasn't spoiled to the point of being bratty, which is just as well. Her parents are protective of her, however. It is probably this close-knit relationship that influenced Miki's social circle. As of the moment, there are only three others in her 'group. The first is her childhood best friend Diana Murphy. Unknown to Miki, her parents had hired Diana to be her personal bodyguard acting as a friend in order to stay close to the young girl. In time, however, the act was lost and became genuine friendship.
The second in the group is Hiwatari Kai, although he acts more like an older brother to her sometimes. This is because when Miki was 6 years old, Kai rescued her from bullies. Ever since, the former has called th latter "Oniichan", and try as Kai might for otherwise, the name stuck. In time, he got used to the roll of 'adopted older brother'.
Last and certainly not the least is Tala, Miki's first - and current - love. They first met at a social function - both came from the same social class when they were young, but not so young that they'd easily forget who the other was. It wasn't the last time they saw each other, either; a few years later, Miki, Diana, and Kai found that Tala had transferred into the same junior high school they attended. Soon the group of three grew to four, as Tala began to hang out with them more. After a period of uncertainty and restlessness, Miki finally came to terms with her feelings, mustering up the courage to tell Tala exactly what she felt for him. To her surprise and delight, the redhead returned her feelings, and they've been together ever since.
Name: Diana Murphy
Played by: BloodCountess_Di
Age: 18
Gender: female
Role: Dark Keeper
Appearance: Layered charcoal-black hair with darker streaks in certain areas. Diana wears red contacts, concealing her real dark brown eyes that appear to be black when angered.
Race: Human
Personality: Diana is rebellious with a tendency to make almost every one who crosses her fear her, with the exception of certain others. She can be hurtful but at the same time, comforting to those she cares for. She will not hesitate to cause pain to those who cross her and this isusually is achieved by any means necessary.
Background/History: Diana came from a rich family who took pride in their family background of being bodyguards of high officials and the like. When she was younger, Diana was hired by Miki’s father to guard Miki; however, she was not to reveal her job by acting as her best friend. The act turned into the real thing after a time, and Diana found herself to be Miki’s most trusted protector and friend.
She has a reputation of being sent to the principal’s office more than a few times each term. Aside from this, nothing much is known to her, even by her peers at school. If she revealed anything else about herself, it was most likely to her small circle of friends - Miki, Tala, and Kai. Diana often agrees with Kai, even to the point of sometimes hinting at having a small liking for him; the dark-haired girl brushes this off almost always, though. She also often picks on Tala because of Miki’s feelings for him but she hides the fact that she is happy that Miki chose him instead of any other guy.
Name: Takenouchi Yuriko
Played by: flameangel_child524 Age: 16 Gender: Female Role: peacemaker; 'mother' of the group; 'tactical support unit' Appearance: Yuriko sports a lithe but well-toned frame, with pleasantly tanned skin and with slightly wavy hair that reaches just above her shoulders, so dark it shines a deep indigo when in sunlight. Her large, friendly, hazel green eyes are an interesting feature, drawing attention to her pleasant open face, upon which the faintest hint of a smile can often be seen. (illustration in progress) Race: Human Personality: Yuriko is amiable, friendly, and has a firm temperament. She does not anger easily - although she will get annoyed at times. When disagreements arise, she is usually the first to suggest talking it out; rarely will she stand by and watch as her friends turn to physical 'conversation' to settle misunderstandings and such.
In school, she is a good student, constantly one of the high scorers in her class, but humble about it; she won't hesitate to help a struggling classmate do better. Background/History: Of a relatively lower class compared to most of her friends, Yuriko nonetheless came from a rather well-to-do family. From the time she could read simple sentences - around 4 years of age, to be exact - she has had tutors in various subjects, as well as more recreational activities, such as playing the piano and martial arts.
It was this last that she especially enjoyed. As she would later put to her father when asked if she wanted to continue her training in kung fu and tae kwon do, "When I'm moving across the dojo, seeing but not really seeing my surroundings, knowing I'm supposed to attack something but wary about falling into traps and getting caught off-guard... it's then that I feel most alive, my own person."
Little did she know that the skills she learned from these two martial forms would aid her soon. Very soon.
Name: Aelian Zurea (pronounced AY-leen Dzu-REE-yah)
Played by: flameangel_child524 Age: 21
Gender: Female Role: Guide and helper to the Guardians and Keepers while they are in Arkanna Appearance: Aelian - Aela to some - has long auburn hair she often puts up in a loose bun, tanned skin, and sharp, sea-green eyes that darken when angered. She has less thin, pointed ears than accustomed to among the elfin races because her being a halfling.
(illustration in progress)
Race: Half elf, half veypr Personality: Aelian is a stern, no-nonsense sort. She takes her job as Guide very seriously, and will rarely joke nor try in any way to lighten the atmosphere. Background/History: Born to a nobleman of Tersish, ancestral home of the forest elves, Aelian was raised with the knowledge that, as nobility, she held more information about Arkanna than most others, and as a result would be a likely candidate to become a Guide - for what, the young half-elf didn't know, but she knew, from the way her father spoke to her then, that the role was an important one, and she determined that if she were chosen for the task, she would do it to the best of her abilities.
The Shadow first struck when Aelian was 19 years old. Already a master Tracker, journeyman cleric, and apprentice mage, she was affronted when she found out her parents had gone to the front lines - both were skilled magick-users, specializing in offensive spells and incantations - to hold off the Daemn, without telling her. And so she set out, gleaning from conversations she overheard where the battle was most likely taking place.
She arrived in time to see her parents struck down by a girl younger than she. Enraged at this casual disregard for life - elves are brought up with the belief that all life is sacred and should not be taken in so demeaning a manner - especially the lives of her parents, Aelian charged forward... right into an explosive spell. The force of the blast knocked her out, and the elfin girl's last coherent thought was that it was over; she had died without having had the chance to avenge her parents' brutal murder.
She awoke, seemingly days later, on the crumbled remains of what once was Krield's main plaza, surrounded by bodies, broken and bleeding. It was here that the High Oracle-Priestess made her presence known to Aelian, revealing at last the true role of a Guide and that indeed she had been chosen to act as one, when the time came. In the meantime, Yumeru-hime said, she had to hone her tracking, clerical, and magick skills. This Ailean agreed to immediately, and which she did for nearly two years.
Name: Joumyaku
Played by: BloodCountess_Di
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Role: A Daemn of considerable rank – one equivalent to captain – and answerable to the Black Rose; Doumyaku’s partner in battle and on missions.
Appearance: Joumyaku presents as a typical veypr, with pale, almost translucent skin and pale hair – his being tea green rather than completely white – a slight build with wiry strength in his arms, pronounced incisors (of course, one will see these only if he bares his teeth in a smile or a snarl), and ears that look like those of a bat. His eyes belie his elfin heritage, for they are cyan in color – veypr eyes are never light colored.
Race: Half veypr, half shadow elf
Personality: Obedient to his mistress but often dumb at times, Joumyaku tends to be rather uncontrollable. He is more like his father, with a tendency towards unexplainable urges of violence aimed at everyone and no one in particular. However, with elfin blood coursing through his veins, it’s only when his fiery temper gets the better of him that those unfortunate enough to have become targets will be slain by sharp-tipped boomerangs, his weapon of choice.
Background/History: Born of an elfin mother and a veypr father, Joumyaku was raised as any child within a veypr household. His parents were peaceful folk – his father was a rarity among others of his race, for his urges, although quite violent, were quite rare. From early on, the veypr-elfin child showed no outward signs of ties to magick, so his father trained him in physical combat.
His sister, Doumyaku, was born when he was but a year old, hence a connection between them similar to that between twins. The half veypr, half elfin siblings lost their parents, who were killed in a town raid by bandits. They would have been killed as well, without the Black Rose’s intervention. As it turned out, the leader of the bandits was one of her targets, and in slaying him – as was her custom – she slew his retinue as well. Forever grateful to her for sparing him and his sister, Joumyaku vowed to be of service to the Black Rose even unto death.
Name: Doumyaku
Played by: BloodCountess_Di
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Role: A Daemn of considerable rank – equivalent to captain – and answerable to the Black Rose; Joumyaku’s partner in battle and on missions.
Appearance: Doumyaku mirrors her brother in almost every physical aspect. Her skin is as pale and her hair is the same shade; her ears are of the same shape and she possesses the same slight but wiry build. Her eyes, however, are as pale as her hair, a very pale blue that seems almost white – again, a characteristic not typical of veyprs, these light-colored eyes.
Race: Half veypr, half shadow elf
Personality: Obedient to her mistress, sometimes the only one who can calm her brother in times of his sudden violent rampages. Doumyaku is the calmer and more silent of the two, tending to think before acting; she plans ahead instead of rushing headlong into missions and such. Though her elfin half tends to keep her temper in check, when her patience runs thin the steady control collapses under her veypr tendencies – the same violent rages her brother Joumyaku experiences at times. She fights using different forms of shadow magick rather than weapons; if necessary, however, she fights with short blades, usually a pair of sai.
Background/History: Born a year after Joumyaku, this half veypr, half elfin child professed a connection – or at least, an interest – in magick. Her elfin mother taught her as best she could. Through coincidence of by design, bandits attacked the town they resided in, only to be slain by someone far more fearsome, known then only as the Black Rose. Forever grateful to her, and following her brother’s example, Doumyaku vowed to be of service to the Black Rose even unto death.
((You guys're probably wondering what the heck Yuuhi_Kanamei aka Kana's characters are doing in this RP. Well, BloodCountess_Di and Yuuhi_Kanamei are cousins, and the latter gave the former permission to use her characters. ^^ Just a little info there.))

A whisper of silk as it brushed against the stone floor, the room's occupant moving across to stand at the single window that allowed one to view the outside world. A slight breeze blew in, ruffling the newly-made bedclothes, the girl's long, silver hair, and her pure white robes. As she stood by the window, a small, sad smile came to her face.
It was so peaceful out there, in Khraal, the Central Kingdom. The Inner Kingdoms Eilran and Akhtai seemed peaceful as well.
But all was not as it seemed, nor should be. Already the Shadow had crept further than Yumeru-hime had imagined. The High Priestess-Oracle of Arkanna called to mind the hour she sent the stones of power out into the world and beyond, to Arkanna's sister dimension, Earth. Whether or not she had been successful in trying to avert disaster would be apparent in as little as two weeks, or as long as a year or so. But to Yumeru it mattered not how long until signs started appearing...as long as they weren't signs of failure.
As Protector and High Priestess-Oracle, she had done her part. Now, all she could do was wait...
----------------------------------------
Hiwatari Kai groaned as he dabbed at his neck with a pale blue handkerchief. Damn, was it warm! He'd known summer was approaching, but he hadn't expected the heat to be this bad! He was just glad the summer uniform for Shinsen High didn't include a blazer - he knew of other schools' uniforms that did - it made the walk to school a bit more tolerable.
As he placed the handkerchief back in his pocket, his fingers came in contact with something smooth. Frowning, Kai drew the object out and examined it.
Oh, yeah... he thought as - grasping it between middle, forefinger, and thumb - he turned it and looked at it from every angle. In most cases, it would have been a nondescript, boring stone anyone could have found on the sidewalk or by a riverbed. But these were not normal circumstances; the stone he held now had somehow found its way to his desk that morning, when the slate-haired teen had no recollection of bringing one home that night. And why would he? It was just a stone.
Or at least, it could have been. One end felt less round than the others, and upon closer inspection, there was a strange marking on it. The mark looked like a wide, cursive letter 'M', only the left-hand peak was higher then the right-hand one. Also, the 'tail' curved down rather than up, as should have been the case with such handwriting - if the mark was even meant to be handwriting to begin with.
Sighing, he pocketed the stone once more, making sure that it wouldn't fall out somehow on the rest of the walk. He'd need it if he was to consult his science teacher on it later that day. That is, if Kenny didn't figure it out first.
Just to clarify: this is an AU fic, right? In this case, most of the characters start out as friends. And please PM me the other characters you'll play temporarily - until more people join, that is. =)

Quiet.
Turbulent, unsettling silence reigned. Other travellers would have stopped in their tracks, glancing every now and then over their shoulder, looking for something not quite right, while they journeyed through Sylvane, the Forest of Silence. So called not because often, birdsong and animal calls were lost within this woodland, but because it was said many creatures yet unknown to others made their home here, stalking and hunting in that unbearable absence of sound.
But I'm not 'other travellers', a young, dark-haired woman thought, crouched on a tree branch. Deep amethyst eyes scanned her immediate vicinity - a wood mouse in the bush there, with a snake poised to strike behind it, and a bluejay taking wing to her left, but that was all.
No sign of her target. She shook her head, then uttered a few words. Instantly, the weapon in her hand - a finely-crafted double-bladed short sword - shrunk until it was no bigger than an earring. Which it was when she was not on a 'mission'.
For weeks - perhaps months, she was uncertain which - the pale young woman had stayed within the area of the Daemn's Keep in Dunzuren, half a day's walk from the Forest. She barely left her room, save for meals, her daily training... and the occasional meeting with the Shadow Lord. It was for him that she sometimes travelled beyond the walls of the Keep when she'd rather supervise the fledglings soon to be drafted into the Daemn army. As Commander-General, directly answerable to the Dark One himself, she was called upon only when a target - or targets - proved too much to handle by her subordinates, whoever they may be.
The young woman leapt off the branch, heading for the river that split the Forest in two. While conventional trackers stayed away from bodies of water, claiming any trace of the target would be washed away by the moisture in the air, she knew better. Any source of drink was an ample site of information, if one knew what to look for and how to find it.
In minutes, she reached the northwestern bank of the river; it was only a tributary of the greater Lyr River, but wide and fast-flowing enough to merit being called the Silent River. If intel had been correct - and it most often was - her target, a forest elfin lady they had recently identified as one of the potential Guides for the prophesied Guardians and Keepers, would have passed here only an hour after the Black Rose began her journey from Dunzuren. She could not be far away, and given the strength of the current, she could not have crossed here.
The Black Rose. Scourge of Krield. Shadow-child of Earth and Arkanna. She had so many names, none she detested nor liked. Not even her birthname. Had it really been 18 years before that she was birthed and given a name that meant, according to how it was written in her mother's tongue, "Child of Light"? It seemed that her life had truly begun when she first arrived here, in her father's birthland.
Frowning slightly at the pause she'd taken to wallow in what were supposed to be memories, thoughts of little consequence, Keiko sped off, fairly flying for the speed and ease at which she moved. She was given a week to find and eliminate this Guide candidate and return to the Keep with her report. And while surprised at this sudden imposition of a time limit, the woman could not help but feel elated. She needed a challenge every now and then.

Summer days drifting again. The heat overpowering a few bystanders to take out their hankerchiefs to wipe their faces clean from sweat. Also a certain two-toned teen, just finished pocketing an item and continuing to walk until...
a blue blur zipped past and clamped it's arms around the teen male's torso. A big smile came and friendly dark brown eyes opened and then her mouth opened "Hi Oniichan!"
