I'm good like that. I'm gonna close yours okay? Just to avoid people keeping both topics bumped to the top.

I'm a musical person so I have no real opinion on the play categories. I will focus only on musical ones.

Best Musical
Spring Awakening by a hair, passing off Grey Gardens and Curtians which will cancel eachother out. Mary Poppins doesn't stand a chance.

Best Revival of a Musical
CLOSE call! Could really go to any of them, though I think in the long run it's gonna come down to A Chorus Line and Company with Company JUST squeaking by for the win.

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical
Three way race between Michael Cerveris, Raul Esparza, and Jonathan Groff. Michael and Raul because they are so well established in the business and will get alot of votes for being big names alone. Jonathan is the fresh face that is getting alot of hype so he might win but in the end I think and hope that it will go to Raul. The boy deserves a Tony by now.

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical
Another close race. Laura Bell Bundy is the only one that doesn't stand a chance, but as for the rest it could go to any of them. They are all big names in the business and popular with the theatre community. If I had to guess I would saw it's gonna go to either Christine Ebersole or Audra McDonald.

That's all for now. I'll make more picks later.

Yup, thanks for that. I was looking around for a mod to ask to lock it, because I'm slow like that XD

Glad to see the Spring Awakening boy, as well as the music, and 11 things, are getting deserved credit. And a nod to High Fidelity's AMAZING set! Woot!

And now for Aries' official 2007 Tony Shoulds and Will! (Granted, the only 2 new Broadway shows I have actually seen this year are High Fidelity (pre-Broadway) and Spring Awakening, so the SHOULDS are completely biased or totally made up, and the WILLS are complete guess work.) But hey, it's worth a shot!

Best Play

Will Win: The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard

Best Musical
Should win: Spring Awakening
Will Win: Spring Awakening or Grey Gardens

Best Revival of a Play

Win Win: Inherit the Wind?

Best Revival of a Musical

Will Win: Company
Should Win, just because I adore the new cast and the show as a whole: A Chorus Line

Best Special Theatrical Event

Who's even heard of the other one?

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play
Will Win: Christopher Plummer, Inherit the Wind

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play

Should Win: Laura Bell Bundy. What can I say; I adore her.

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play
Will Win: Ethan Hawke, The Coast of Utopia

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play
Will Win: Xanthe Elbrick, Coram Boy
Dude, just her name wins, for being the coolest ever.

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical
Will Win: John Gallagher, Jr, Spring Awakening
Should Win: John Gallagher, Jr, Spring Awakening

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical
Will Win: Mary Louise Wilson, Grey Gardens or Karen Ziemba, Curtains

Best Direction of a Play
Will Win: Jack O'Brien, The Coast of Utopia
His show was 8 hours, and people still went. Props.

Best Direction of a Musical

Will Win: Michael Mayer, Spring Awakening or John Doyle, Company
Should Win: Spring Awakening

Best Choreography
Will Win: Anything but Spring Awakening
Should Win: Legally Blonde
Where there is dog choreography, there are should wins.

Best Book of a Musical

Will Win: Grey Gardens or, but probably not, Spring Awakening

I obviously know nothing about Curtains...

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre

Will Win: Curtains (what the heck, it's Kander and Ebb, worth a shot)
Should Win: Spring Awakening.
Should Win if Spring Awakening doesn't: Legally Blonde, because it's hot like that.

Best Orchestrations
Will Win: Spring Awakening?
Should Win: Spring Awakening

Best Scenic Design of a Play

Will Win: Ti Green and Melly Still, Coram Boy
It was expensive....

Best Scenic Design of a Musical

The money thing just has me sold on this one...

Best Lighting Design of a Play

Will Win: Jason Taylor, Journey's End
It's should probably win something, right?

Best Lighting Design of a Musical
Will Win: Kevin Adams, Spring Awakening
Should Win: Kevin Adams, Spring Awakening

Th-th-th-that's all, Folks!

Best Play
The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard
It's been winning everything anyways... and Tom Stoppard is a genius.

Best Musical
Spring Awakening
The same reason as above. I haven't seen it yet, but I've been told by someone who has similar tastes as me that I wouldn't enjoy it. I'll see it if it wins, I'm just not excited about

Best Revival of a Musical
Company
John Doyle was snubbed last year. I'm so excited to see it. I really don't think A Chorus Line will win. It followed the original too closely to be considered a revival (in my opinion).

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical
Raul Esparza, Company
Have you heard him? I get emotional just HEARING the soundtrack. Plus, Bobby is one of the most complex characters in musical theatre, and he is supposed to be amazing.

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical
Anyone besides Deborah Monk. Christine Ebersole and Donna Murphy have been getting a lot of publicity on how well they do the roles, Audra McDonald is always amazing (winning 4 Tonys for a reason), so they have my votes. I really thought that Laura Bell Bundy did a crazy amazing job in Legally Blonde. Granted, the character is not as nuanced as I'm assuming Ebersole and Murphy's are, but she was still explosive. She won't win though...

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical
Please, oh please anyone but
Charlotte d'Amboise, A Chorus Line
I hated her. She was a bad singer, and okay dancer, and not the best actress. Maybe it's me, but I hope not her.

Best Direction of a Play
Jack O'Brien, The Coast of Utopia
Once again, winning everything

Best Direction of a Musical
John Doyle, Company
Michael Mayer, Spring Awakening
I want John Doyle to win, but since he won last year for the same style, he probably won't. Spring Awakening has been winning everything else though.

Best Choreography
Jerry Mitchell, Legally Blonde
He turned the Bend and Snap into a 10 minute dance. The man deserves a Tony.

Best Book of a Musical
Steven Sater, Spring Awakening
Winning everything

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre
Music: Duncan Sheik; Lyrics: Steven Sater, Spring Awakening
Same reason.

Best Orchestrations
Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening
Not Company? Dang...

Best Scenic Design of a Musical
Christine Jones, Spring Awakening
High Fidelity was nominated for something! Amazing!

Best Costume Design of a Musical
Bob Crowley, Mary Poppins
William Ivey Long, Grey Gardens
These are the only two I think of, since they have the most interesting costumes.

Best Lighting Design of a Musical
Kevin Adams, Spring Awakening
The lighting seems like one of those "I'm totally going for the Tony award for Best Lighting!" designs.

Rest of my musical related predictions...

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical
Not really familiar with any of the gentlemen in this category so I will just say that it is gonna go to ummm... John Gallagher, Jr. I have heard good things

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical
Close race again. Gonna say that this one will go to Mary Louise Wilson for Grey Gardens.

Best Direction of a Musical
Gonna go to one of the Micheals. Either for Grey Gardens of Spring Awakening.

Best Choreography
Not Spring Awakening. That's for sure. I have a funny feeling that this is going to end up going to
Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear for Mary Poppins.

Best Book of a Musical
My money is on Doug Wright for Grey Gardens.

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre
Knowing theatre politics... it will most likly go to Kander and Ebb since it was the last score they wrote together. It SHOULD however go to Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater for Spring Awakening

Best Orchestrations
I never really understood the need for this category so I'll just go with Duncan Sheik for Spring Awakening

Best Scenic Design of a Musical

Close call. I think it's between Bob Crowley for Mary Poppins and Allen Moyer for Grey Gardens. Ps.. WHERE the heck did High Fedelity come from?!

Best Costume Design of a Musical
Gonna say Bob Crowley for Mary Poppins. I hear there are some crazy outfits in that show.

Best Lighting Design of a Musical
Kevin Adams for Spring Awakening

Summery... the prizes will be split mainly between Spring Awakening and Grey Gardens, but Mary Poppins might make a nice showing for the technical design awards. I really don't think that Spring Awakening is gonna sweep like everyone seems to be expecting it to do. I have heard just as much good things about Grey Gardens only it's not a show that has pushed peoples buttons so it has not gotten the same hype.

Ok, I'm sorry, but what you gusy SEEN the High Fidelity set? I know the show over all got trashed (even though it was super entertaining and didn't deserve it at all), but every single review you will notice never failed to mention the incredible set. Because it was, well, incredible. I mean, you wouldn't think you could make that much out of a few bed rooms and a record shop, but it was just insane.

Best Special Theatrical Event
Will Win: Kiki & Herb Alive on Broadway
Who's even heard of the other one?

Funny, I had the opposite reaction when I read the nominations.

I'm not going to make any predictions, since the only show I've seen is Curtains. But I gotta know, Mister, how come you said "Anyone but Deborah Monk" for Leading Actress in a Musical?

Best Play
The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard

I'm just glad all three parts count as only one, or else we'd have Part 1, Part 2, etc

Best Musical
Spring Awakening

Best Revival of a Play
Inherit the Wind

Best Revival of a Musical
A Chorus Line

I can't say Company, only because I saw the production of Sweeney Todd that was directed by the same director and the instruments take away from the acting, I don't care what anyone says.

Best Special Theatrical Event
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play
Brian F. O'Byrne, The Coast of Utopia

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play
Angela Lansbury, Deuce

I love Angela Lansbury, dont you?

Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical
Jonathan Groff, Spring Awakening

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical
Christine Ebersole, Grey Gardens

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play
Billy Crudup, The Coast of Utopia

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play
Martha Plimpton, The Coast of Utopia

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical
John Gallagher, Jr, Spring Awakening

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical
Karen Ziemba, Curtains

Best Direction of a Play
Jack O'Brien, The Coast of Utopia

Best Direction of a Musical
Michael Mayer, Spring Awakening

I swear if Doyle (director of Company) wins again, I'm throwing something hard and dangerous at the TV

Best Choreography
Rob Ashford, Curtains

Best Book of a Musical
Steven Sater, Spring Awakening

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre
Music: Duncan Sheik; Lyrics: Steven Sater, Spring Awakening
PostPosted: Thu May 17, 2007 5:33 am

What are you talking about he was snubbed last year? He won the Tony for best musical direction for Sweeney Todd, which had to be the worst production I've ever seen. Actors as the orchestra too! Please give me a break! What a way to keep costs low and bilk your audience. Not to mention screw the musicians.

Oh Tom Stoppard. Good for him getting nominated. Honestly though, I don't get some of his stuff. Whooo.

I heard Frost/Nixon and The Little Dog Laughed were both good, so my bets on one of those.

I'm surprised Legally Blonde got nominated for so much, but I kind of want it to win something, just for kicks.

Spring Awakening will probably win a bunch of awards too.

I'm sadly not farmiliar enough with most of the shows to give an accurate prediction though.
PostPosted: Mon May 21, 2007 9:14 am

Yeah, I'm not really into the whole straight play scene. Never really functioned for me, but musicals, now there's a different story. smile

Best Musical
Spring Awakening
It was definitely interesting. I wouldn't be surprised about curtains, and who knows, maybe Mary Poppins will pull an Avenue Q.

Best Revival of a Musical
A Chorus Line
Although Company should probably win, they hyped A Chorus Line way too much to not vote for it

Best Leading Actor
Michael Cerveris
Even though Raul deserves it just a bit more, I still say Michael simply because they'll want to honor him for Sweeney a bit more as well

Best Leading Actress
Not a clue
I really don't know these well enough, though I doubt anything from Legally Blonde has a chance of winning

Best Featured Actor
John Gallagher, Jr
They have to push Spring Awakening a bit and I think this is the place they will do it

Best Featured Actress
Charlotte d'Amboise
Everyone I know who has seen this has said she is amazing, so I'll trust my friends opinions on this one until I get a chance to see/hear it

Best Director
Michael Mayer
Again, Spring Awakening

Best Choreography
Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear
The sheer amount of work that went into this had to be simply astounding and the quality of the choreography should be honored.

Best Book, Score, and Orchestration
Not a clue on these two, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Ebb and Kander grab a couple of Tonys

Actually, I'm not really sure on any of the tech ones. I must admit that as a sound guy, I'm kinda frustrated that there is no Tony award for Sound Design yet. I mean, come on, it's about time. But those are my predictions, play with it as you will!

Ooh, I hope Angela Lansbury wins her category!! She's so wonderful. <3
And I want Raul Esparza to win for Company, and I think it'll win best revival, too, because I listened to some of the music and it sounds almost as good if not better than the original.
Aww, I hope Laura Bell Bundy wins just for the hell of it. x3
