Make sure you have a connection between your router and DS (go to nintendo.com if you don't know how), and talk to the dog on the right in the town gate. I don't remember his name, sorry... ^^;

but you have to have friends outside of towns in order to go out. they won't let you out into "strange towns" because they say it's not safe
