He swore that the little tree rats were all conspiring against him. That had to be it, because he had never been pelted by so many acorns before. The damn things were mobbing him!

This was not something he needed right now. Not when he was alone, bored, and worried. Deimos was certain now that it hadn't been his imagination that morning.

Moirai had stepped foot into the pack lands, which meant that his family was in danger. He couldn't deny it anymore. He couldn't hope that she would forget about him and leave him alone.

He had to face the facts; she was going to kill him.

But not if he killed her first.

His only worry was if he could ask for his packs' help. Did he want to drag them any farther into this than what he already had?

Sighing, he loped away from the pelting squirrels and wandered alone for the second time in as many weeks.

Hallie had awoken from her nap with a deafening rattle in her head. It didn't hurt, at least not in the beginning. But as the noise persisted within her skull she found her ears aching, though it wasn't her ears that were actually hearing the noise. It was simply an illusion in her mind, one that made her think she was hearing with her ears.

Groaning, she rose to her paws and shook off her fur to rid it of any leaves or dirt that might have collected. Almost instantly the noise in her head disappeared. She thought that rather strange, but she just remained thankful that it was gone and it wasn't bothering her any longer.

Making a quick check of her surroundings, both with her mind and with her normal senses, she found no one in the immediate vicinity. That was good for her. She didn't know what she would do if she found that someone was nearby and perhaps owned these lands. Yet, from what she could find out the day before, no one occupied the spot where she had slept. She'd made sure of that before she'd fallen asleep, vulnerable in her dreams to any who passed by.

Stretching out her limbs and her back, the seer then set off in a random direction. She wasn't quite sure what she was going to do with herself today, but she figured that she could handle that when the need arose. For now, perhaps she'd simply take a stroll. Find some breakfast, maybe.

Within minutes she was running on swift paws, feeling the wind through her fur. She hadn't known why, but for some reason Hal had wanted to run, not just walk. It felt good and it got the blood flowing. A perfect remedy for a sleepy wolf. Just a few minutes like this and she'd be ready to take on the world. It was wonderful.

Yet as she ran, her ever alert mind picked up on the angry chattering of squirrels, which she could understand. They were saying something about an annoying wolf, and she knew that they weren't talking about her. Instantly cautious, the female stopped her running and hid quickly, though who she was hiding from she wasn't sure. She just wanted to make sure she would be safe before she approached.

So she searched his mind, looking for clues. But what she found wasn't pleasing. He had murder in his thoughts. They seemed rather uneasy, but they were still murderous thoughts nonetheless. She attempted to sneak away, to simply just leave him. But the squirrels would have none of it. They spotted her light fur among the bushes and began yelling again, pelting her with acorns this time.

She growled and snapped, but knew that her attempts were futile. They were high in the trees and she was unable to reach them. Moving away, she began running again. Yet she had been so preoccupied with the squirrels that she hadn't exactly paid attention to what was in front of her...

Hallie ended up barreling straight into Deimos.

Deimos was a big, sturdy wolf, but he was distracted, and not at all bracing for a run in with another wolf. Tumbling to the ground with a surprised bark, he quickly rolled over to his feet, on them in an instant, tail high, ears flat.

His white teeth shone like pearls in the meager sunlight that filtered through the trees, and, in the mindset he was in, the big male thought he was being attacked. He only eased when he saw that it wasn't his sister, and that the femme looked as surprised as he felt. Legs still stiff, however, he cocked his head to one side.

"Are you okay?"

Even though he still had little liking for females, he had grown to tolerate some, and this one was very pretty, her fur creamy, yet shadowed, eyes glinting oddly. If he swung that way, he would think that she was attractive.

But he didn't, so she wasn't. It was nothing against her, that was for sure.

Suddenly, he smiled wryly, ears cocking towards the sound of the still madly chattering squirrels. "The little tree rats harass you too?"

The moment she had crashed into Deimos was the moment she had given herself a mental smack in the head. How could she have been so careless? True, those acorns had hurt when they had pelted her from high up in the tree, but she could have easily dropped each one of them dead to the ground with a single blink. If only she could be that heartless.

Grumbling and groaning, Hallie took just slightly longer than the male to rise to her paws. Even without looking, she knew that he was poised defensively but wasn't about to attack her. But he did think that he was being attacked before he had gotten a good look at her. That, at least, was a relief. She'd only woken up not too long ago and she was in no mood to start something up with a large male.

"I'm fine," she snapped, though her anger wasn't directed at him. "Those damn rodents," she hissed, by way of agreement. Lifting her head up, she glared straight into the midst of the gathered squirrels, chittering madly and some laughing.

"You better scurry back to your holes and mind your own business," she spoke to the squirrels through their minds, a dark threat unerlying her words. Each squirrel stood up straight, glancing around slightly. They were confused, not quite sure whether they had really heard that or not. It distracted them enough to where the female could rush the tree and bark madly, snarling viciously in between barks. This caught the squirrels' attention again, and they all bumped into each other as they scurried back into the safety of their holes.

Turning back to Deimos, she eyed him suspiciously. Her actions would come off as weird to him, and she was contemplating wiping his memory. But she hadn't tested it yet and she didn't want to get rid of any vital information, so she let it be.

"I hate squirrels," she said, by way of explanation.

Sitting herself down in front of him but a good distance away as well, she blinked her golden eyes at him. It seemed as if she were looking straight through him. "I'm Hallie," she spoke after a moment.

Dipping his head respectfully, he offered his own name, but he was wary, as he usually was with strange wolves. "Deimos." The way she looked at him, or rather, didn't look at him, made his fur bristle. Cocking his head to one side and keeping his tail firmly in place high upon his back, he added, "What brings you to this part of the forest?"

He only asked because they were very near the border of his pack land, and he took his position as alpha very seriously; any wolf that even came close was heavily scrutinized by either him or Alexander, to make sure the stranger didn't pose a threat to the pack.

Hallie noticed the way the male was holding himself and couldn't help but let a small smile cross her maw. It was a nice change to finally see someone who was serious about protecting his pack. "Pleasure to meet you, Deimos," she spoke softly, sitting down on her haunches comfortably. She wasn't in the least bit scared. She could read his thoughts and know his actions before he could.

To answer his question about why she was there, she merely shrugged her shoulders. "I'm just wandering." She eyed him for a moment, reading deeper. "I'm not here to invade. Invading isn't my thing. If I want to live some place, I ask for acceptance." Invading was a waste of time and relatively pointless.

"I didn't really mean to get so close to your packlands," she added. "I was following the noise of those squirrels. It sounded strange and curiousity got the best of me."

Then she sat back and waited for his response. The female had given several subtle hints that she wasn't quite normal in some way, and she wanted to see if he could figure it out.

Deimos could understand that. Curiosity usually grabbed him by the tail and dragged him into a whole mess of trouble more often than not. He turned and glared at where he knew the squirrels were; the shine of their eyes could be seen from the hollows they had disappeared into.

"The damn rats decided I was a good target," he murmured, wondering how she had known of his worry of invasion. She did seem kind of odd; distant, almost as if she were somewhere else, and her eyes looked as if they saw right through his very soul.

"Well, if you were simply wandering, care to have some company? I was on my way to finding something to eat. You're welcome to join me, if I can catch anything."
PostPosted: Tue May 29, 2007 6:49 am

Hallie shook her head, though it wasn't directed towards Deimos. She was shaking her head at the squirrels. They were so small and so vulnerable to predators and yet they seemed to stir up trouble any opportunity they had. One of these days the squirrels would get what was coming to them. But until then--

"It's a good thing we aren't able to throw things then," she chuckled. "There might be a war between us and the squirrels." If she could throw, she would make sure that those squirrels would never come out of their holes.

As the male offered to give her some company, she thought for a moment. Or at least it seemed as if she were contemplating whether to go with him or not. She was doing that, but on a much deeper scale. She was searching his mind, looking for anything in his past or personality that she should be wary of. She tried not to be too thorough however, since she didn't want to give him a headache.

Finally, finding nothing alarming, the female nodded her head. "I would like that, thank you. What did you have in mind for food?" she asked.

He blinked, ears twitching when an odd feeling in his head made him shiver. It almost felt like someone had touched the inside of his skull. When she said yes, however, he grinned. Company always made a meal better.

"I caught the scent of an old doe not too far from here, but I got sidetracked by the squirrels," he told her, silently adding in his head, And thoughts of how long it will take for my sister to kill me . . . "Her tracks show that she's limping, so she doesn't have much more time."
PostPosted: Wed Jun 13, 2007 8:04 pm

With the mention of a sick doe in the area, Hallie immediately widened her mental scope, searching for said doe. And, sure enough, there was a prey animal with a sour mind, just on the edge. This doe knew that she would not last long with her limp. It was difficult for her to run from predators and it was a wonder she had lasted this long.

But beyond finding the doe, she did nothing else with her mind. She felt that using her seer powers to hunt was cheating and that it gave her an unfair advantage, so she always 'turned off' her extra senses and hunted the old fashioned way.

"Let us hurry, then. If she is limping there will no doubt be another predator on her soon," she spoke, reasoning logically out loud so that she didn't seem too supernatural. She was still slightly uncomfortable with her powers. Especially when she heard thoughts like those which had resounded within the male's mind, the ones about his sister killing him or some such thing. Family politics. Nothing that sounded too pretty.

Yet she ignored it for now, giving away no sign that she had heard his mind. Instead, she looked at him expectantly. "Which way?" she asked, though she could have easily figured it out for herself. But to him, she was normal, and she wanted to keep it that way.

Grinning and convinced that she was actually going to hunt with him, he lifted his nose to the sky, sniffing once or twice. Then he was on the scent, pivoting on his hind paws and bolting left as silently as the wind through the leaves. He was all liquid grace, moving as if the trees and shrubs, bracken and dead fall, weren't even there.

His mind was on his next meal, on the hunt, and he only assumed that the female was following him. If she wasn't, well, that didn't mean he wouldn't share. He would simply eat first; hunter's choice.

Suddenly, the scent hit his nose like slamming into a tree, and the doe, who had been hiding in the thick bracken, bolted from her hiding spot, stumbling on her wounded leg. If she had gotten up differently, she might have been able to run for a bit. As it was, the stumble was her downfall.

Jaws salivating, Deimos slipped in for the kill . . .
PostPosted: Wed Jun 20, 2007 4:08 pm

As Deimos sniffed the air for signs of the doe, the female merely stood by. She had confidence in him that he could find the doe and bring it down, with or without her help. But she had said that she would hunt with him and so she was going to stick to her word. Whatever he wanted her to do, she'd do it on the hunt.

When he started off, she didn't immediately follow him though. There were thoughts on her mind, thoughts regarding what she had heard within the male's head. It was troubling her, but she didn't want to pry. So after a few moments she padded forward quickly to catch up to him, immediately slipping into hunting mode as well.

And then the scent came, clear as day. She could tell from his expression and his mindset that he had found the deer. Then, as if answering his discovery, the doe foolishly darted, attempting to escape. But it was obvious that she did indeed have a limp, for she stumbled clumsily and couldn't seem to find her footing.

The male seemed to go straight in, and in response Hallie ran wide to cut off the doe's escape root in case she randomly found her footing and was able to run for a bit.

If Deimos managed to get close enough to bring the doe down, then the seeress would rush in to help. But for now, she simply made sure the doe had no means of escaping.

The doe, her nostrils flared in fear, eyes as wide as oak leaves, suddenly pivoted her entire body mid-leap, angling left. Deimos took his opportunity, his hunger giving him speed. The big male was suddenly under her as she landed, his fangs closing tight over her windpipe. The two fell heavily, Deimos under the big doe.

Yet he never let go, a muffled snarl bubbling from his throat. The deer kicked frantically, but not for long. She knew her time was up.

Hallie stopped running wide. She had tapped into the doe's brain and she knew straight away that the prey animal had given up. She had attempted to run away before, but it was apparent now that she understood: there was no escape for her. She was going to be the wolves' next meal.

Watching with golden eyes, she headed closer towards the doe and Deimos. When the creature fell on top of the wolf, she didn't break stride nor did she speed up. She had tapped into his mind as well and knew that he was going to be fine. He was strong and he wasn't going to let a mere doe get the better of him.

Heading closer all the while, the seeress eventually came upon the two. She blinked down upon them and pondered giving the doe a bite of her own. But the life flickered from the doe, her mind going numb, and Hal knew that there was no need.

"Impressive," she said to Deimos, sitting herself down calmly.

Prying himself from his hunting mindstate, Demios slowly released his prey; he had had his jaws locked so tightly, they now ached. When he looked up at Hallie, sighting there so calmly, he grinned sheepishly.

"Um . . . thanks. I'm sorry, I kind of stole the hunt from you." Lifting his muzzle, he gestured towards the kill. "Take your pick. It's the least I could do for being a glory hog."

Fact of the matter was, he had gotten caught up so easily because a flash of his sister had come into his mind unbidden. Moirai going after Alexander, his pack . . . him.

Right than, the deer had become her, and thus her life had to end, before she could kill the ones he loved. Now that his mind was clear of the fog, he felt ashamed. There had been an easier way to kill the deer, and end her suffering faster. But he had lost himself.
