Joints and Blunts

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Joint is slang for a cigarette rolled with cannabis, sometimes including tobacco or other substances. Usually, rolling papers are used, while in the developing world (where these are scantily available), brown paper, cigarettes with the tobacco removed, or newspaper are used. Papers made for rolling are usually made of rice. Some manufacturers use hemp as an alternative.
Joints are usually passed between people (generally to the left) when more than one person is smoking, unlike cigarettes where usually each person smokes their own. This is more common in areas where marijuana prices are higher. Some users curl their lips to prevent saliva buildup as this may be unpleasant to other smokers sharing the same joint. It may also ruin the roach.
Roaches
The most distinct product of the joint is the roach, or unburnt unconsumed butt end. Roaches are typically either consumed with the aid of a roach clip which offers a narrow grip without the risk of burning one's fingers, or are saved to be combined with other roaches and rerolled into a composite joint. Sometimes the roaches of these "roach spliffs" will be saved, in order to make what is called a second generation roach joint. Roaches are also sometimes finished by being smoked in a pipe, or (in rare cases) consumed by eating. This is sometimes referred to as "eating the peanut" or "popping the roach".
Roaches are often seen as unpleasant, since the proximity of the lit end to the consumers face causes uncomfortable amounts of heat, and sometimes burns if it is not handled carefully. Also, when a paper filter tip as described above is not present, the saliva from the smoker's mouth often causes the paper at the mouth end of a joint to become saturated, making it even more unpleasant to smoke as-is. The fate of a roach is often dictated by geography. Cannabis users in each town or city typcially have their own customs in regards to dealing with this. In places where marijuana is generally more expensive, smokers are more likely to go to greater lengths to conserve every last bit of pot. Whereas in cities where it is cheaper and thus more plentiful, it is less likely that somebody would go to the trouble of saving every roach.
Joints and blunts offer some advantages to pipes and other smoking devices, though some think they burn through cannabis faster. Others think joints get one higher more quickly. If smoking outside the home, joints are more portable and could more easily be confused at a distance with a tobacco cigarette, compared to a pipe
Tobacco Mix
Mixing tobacco in with the cannabis is much more common in Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East and stretching down through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and into India, partly because the majority of cannabis is resin which cannot be smoked on its own in a joint. People who use tobacco claim it helps the joint burn, when loose tobacco acts as "kindling" to ignite the moister and denser cannabis, while some non-tobacco smokers claim that tobacco destroys the cannabis high. Some smokers also avoid mixing cannabis with tobacco for fear of becoming addicted to tobacco. This option of tobacco mix is very rarely used in the United States, Canada, Latin America and other places.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.A blunt is a cigar which is wider than a cigarillo and not quite as wide as a traditional cigar. These cigars typically consist of two main parts; the inner leaf, which is similar to a cigarette rolling paper, except it is made of tobacco, and a thicker outer leaf which is rolled around the inner leaf in a spiral. In most commercially available blunts, the "leaves" are not actual tobacco leaves but rather paper made from tobacco pulp. The word blunt is also sometimes used as street slang in certain urban areas for a cigar which has had its tobacco filling removed by the consumer in order to replace it with marijuana. Other street names include "el-pees" (LP's), According to one source, blunts originated among Jamaicans in New York City in the early 1980's. Blunts take their name from "Phillies Blunt" brand cigars,
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.although other brands of similar make (such as El Producto, White Owl, and Dutch Masters) are also used for this purpose. Tobacco is removed from the inside of the cigar, and replaced with marijuana.
Blunts vs. Joints
Smoking marijuana inside the leaf or paper wrapper of a cigar offers several advantages to the user:
  • The tobacco wrapper slows down the burning rate of the joint. This allows a greater number of users to share the same joint.
  • A blunt holds more marijuana than a joint, and is convenient to use and store. A single user can smoke it, extinguish it, and easily relight it.
  • It looks like a legal drug. Even though it is illegal for adolescents to use tobacco products, blunts appear to be commercial tobacco cigars. Policemen, teachers, and parents who ignore cigarette possession in minors are likely to ignore blunts as well.
  • Nicotine from the tobacco content may add to the effects of the marijuana in a blunt. Nicotine is a stimulant, and marijuana is a minor hallucinogen with some depressant properties.

Pipes

Smoking pipes, often called bowls or pieces, can be made of blown glass, wood, ceramic, stone, or a nonreactive metal (to avoid inhalation of undesirable metal vapors). When speaking about a specific pipe, the term "bowl" often refers to the indentation where cannabis is placed in order to be smoked.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Glass Pipes
Blown-glass pipes are usually intricately and colorfully designed, and can contain materials that change color or become more vivid with repeated use. Such pipes usually have a rush, choke, carb (short for carburetor), or shotgun hole which is covered with a finger to draw more air through the combusting cannabis as the user inhales, and then uncovered to clear the pipe of smoke and slow down the combustion as the user finishes.
Glass doesn't burn, sweat, give a flavor, or impart any impurities into the smoke. It can be cleaned completely. Glass is naturally attractive and alluring to the eye, it is also more versatile in how it can be shaped and colored than perhaps any other medium. The translucency of glass has always appealed to people in a kind of magical way. Especially so in pipes as it lets a smoker see the smoke, and, more importantly, stale smoke, one can then blow the stale smoke out of the pipe before taking a hit. The vast majority of smokers would rather smoke out of glass than any other kind of pipe.
Glass is inert, and will not pose any risk of inhaling oxides (as with metals), or combustion products other than the material being smoked (as with wood). Soda-lime glass, or borosilicate glass (two common glass compositions) have very high thermal resistance, and so conduction from the heat source is minimal. However, with soda-lime glass, this same insulating property makes the pipe susceptible to thermal shock, and may shatter if exposed to great differences in heat environments (eg: smoking in cold weather).
Glass is very fragile, and is at high risk of being broken. This risk is compounded by the fact that some cannabis smoking rituals require that the pipe be passed around the circle, and so could easily be dropped when exchanging hands. This risk is further compounded by the inebriation of the smoker caused by the cannabis itself, or other drugs consumed at social events where cannabis is often smoked eg: alcohol, psychedelic mushrooms, ecstasy, etc.
Glass cannabis pipes (as oppose to crack or meth) tend to have a more artistic or whimsical appearance, with bright colors which tend to become more rich as the pipe is smoked. This is due to the build up of resin material on the walls, and so the (initially) transparent glass becomes opaque. It is not caused by any chemical reaction with the smoke or heat.
Well made glass pipes attain their colour during the blowing process, and thus, the colour cannot be washed away with solvents (except hydrofluoric acid, which attacks glass) as it is within the glass.

Metal Pipes
Metal pipes are often assembled with various fittings that screw together, with interchangeable, and frequently decorative, parts. Tobacco pipes are occasionally used. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Metal pipes are more generally associated with crack, cannabis and other drugs than tobacco use. Though steel was a common material, aluminium and brass are more popular materials now. The advantages of a metal pipe generally include interchangeable parts for optimization and certain components are limited to fit only a metal pipe, such as a threaded metal bowl with optional cap via thread interface that will prevent spills or accidentally blowing the cannabis from the bowl ("blow outs"). Their retention of heat can make them uncomfortably and even dangerously hot but most have rubber or plastic grips on the outside of the pipe. Another common method for burn prevention is the use of one or more rubber rings, which can be placed at the base of the threaded area and prevent conduction of heat. Another drawback of the metal pipe is its typical top heaviness which makes it prone to spills. This is compensated for by flat or squared ends on the 45° or 90° angled elbow piece. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of a metal pipe over a glass piece in many users' minds is that they are, in all normal circumstance, basically indestructible. some metal pipes are also known as sneakatokes do to small compartments that marijuana can be hidden and then smoked in a short time.
Metal bowls are usually overlooked by tobacco smokers because metal bowls require a break-in period of resination. During that time, when tobacco is used, the smoke passing though the piece has an aftertaste. Cannabis smoke usually does not have an odd after-taste and resinates the piece faster. A type of metal pipe usually associated with Marijuana is the chamber pipe, which has an accessible central chamber, which is usually packed with Marijuana to resinate, adding extra THC content when smoked. Also, loose bits of the marijuana fall down into the chamber and also resinate, speeding up the process of resination. The biggest drawback to a metal-stemmed or -bowled pipe is that the metal also creates a lot of condensation in the stem, making for a wet smokeAll metals create odors when heated and although the metals themselves can withstand temperatures of thousands of degrees they still release harmful toxins when heated. Steel has the least odor followed by brass which tastes horrible and irritates the throat after just a few uses, followed by aluminum, on the bottom of the list is copper which is extremely reactive and can create toxic chemicals when triggered by one of the thousands of chemicals inherent in any smoke. Gold is inert and has no taste and is sometimes offered as a bowl plating. Metal pipes are typically short because the metal absorbs the heat from the smoke extremely well whereas long pipes or roomy glass pipes use their larger air space to cool the smoke.

User ImageUser Image

Natural Methods
One of the less popular varieties of pipes are those made from natural materials, such as wood, meerschaum, stone, jade, and even various fruits. The benefits and drawbacks of using various materials compared to more conventional non-tobacco pipes are not well documented as glass pipes are the current norm. Pipes made from woods, some minerals, and even antlers are very porous, which makes for a smoother, dryer smoke. These pipes tend not to have the characteristic "carb" found on glass pipes, perhaps due to the fact a smooth hit can be accomplished without any additional ventilation.
Pipes made from stone, onyx, jade and other stones are non-reactive and allow more of the flavor of the smoke to come through.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.A chillum is a large conical pipe made of glass, ceramic, or natural materials, held vertically, with the bowl aligned with the mouthpiece, and without a secondary hole. This apparatus is traditionally used in Hindu and Rastafarian ceremonies.
A one-hitter is similar to a chillum, but is meant to be much more stealthy. They require a very small amount of marijuana, thus the name, and are usually made out of metal and painted to resemble a filtered cigarette. One-hitters are accompanied by a dugout so that marijuana may be transported and consumed without drawing attention to the smoker.

A Dug Out System is a very small portable smoking instrument. It has the size of a small flat lighter. This small container has a cavity User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.at one end and a mouthpiece at the other. You press the cavity into a small container of cleaned, chopped herbs to fill it and then it is lit like a cigarette and inhaled steadily until everything is smoked. You only get one inhalation per filling, therefore this instrument is also called a one-hit. They are perfect for those who like to smoke just a little at a time. This American invention is perfect for those who want a few quick puffs. It's fast and you don't need any tobacco. You can carry it with you all the time and it gives you the opportunity to smoke without it being noticed. In critical situations you can even pass it off as a cigarette holder.

When an actual pipe is not present for smoking, it is sometimes necessary to fashion a pipe out of available fruits, the most popular, arguably, being the apple. Fruit pipes are unique in that the smoke chambers are naturally wet, thus moistening and cooling to smoke in addition to contributing the apparatus' own characteristic flavor. Also, this particular kind of pipe is disposable, whether eaten or simply thrown out.

Bongs and Hookahs

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.A bong is a water-pipe by which the cannabis smoke is filtered through water into a chamber. It should be noted that smoking from a bong loaded with cold water, ice, or snow will greatly cool the smoke and reduce adverse effects of the heat. Using non-carbonated alcoholic beverages, such as wine or liquor, as a filtering liquid is sometimes preferred by smokers and is said to make the smoke milder, although, as THC is dissolved in alcohol, some of it remains in whatever spirit used.
Bong use is common and enables smoking techniques that are not possible with a simple smoking pipe. Bongs are one of the most efficient methods of smoking, because while very little smoke is wasted due to burning while not being inhaled, more active ingredients are lost than tars, due to the presence of a chamber and carburetor, although large-chambered bongs can ignite cannabis at a very fast pace. Some might argue that bongs are just as effective if not more than other methods simply because of the sheer amount of smoke one can conceivably inhale after having it cooled in the chamber.
Homemade bong designs commonly use a carbonated drink bottle, although any container, even glass, ceramic, metal, or natural (according to the skill and preference of the user) can be used. A bong pipe (or other improvised bowl) is inserted into a small hole, usually burnt or somehow put near the bottom of the bottle, but leaving enough room to allow for the stem to pass through the user's choice of liquid. A carburetor may or may not be cut, bored or burnt into the bong, according to the user's preference.

A hookah is a single or multi-stemmed, often glass-based, waterUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. pipe device for smoking; originating in Iran, it gained fame in the Arab World when it traveled from Persia to Arabia. A hookah operates by water-filtration and indirect heat. It can be used for smoking many substances, such as herbal fruits and tobacco. Depending on locality, hookahs are known as other names, such as a shisha/sheesha, water pipe, nargeela/nargile/narghile/nargileh/narguilé, argeela/arghileh/arguilé, okka, kalyan, gewat suckre, or ghelyoon/ghalyan. Many of these names are of Arab, Indian, Turkish, Uzbek, or Persian origin. Narghile is from the Persian word nārgil or "coconut", and in Sanskrit nārikela and it was made out of coconut shells. Shisha is from the Persian word shishe, literally translated as glass and not bottle, and is primarily used for water pipes in Egypt and the Arab countries of the Gulf (such as Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, and Saudi Arabia). Hashish is an Arabic word for grass, which may have been another way of saying cannabis resin. Another source states, "In early Arabic texts, the term hashish referred not only to cannabis resin but also to the dried leaves or flower heads and sweetmeats made with them". Hookah itself may stem from Arabic uqqa, meaning small box, pot, or jar. Both names refer to the original methods of constructing the smoke/water chamber part of the hookah.

Vaporizers

A vaporizer (or vapouriser) is a device commonly used to release medicinal and/or psychoactive compounds from plant material, commonly cannabis, although it can also be used for tobacco or to release certain therapeutic compounds from herbs and other plants, a practice now commonly known as Phyto-Inhalation. For medical or recreational cannabis users, vaporizing is an alternative to smoking. Rather than burning the cannabis, a vaporizer heats it enough (typically around 200 degrees Celsius) so that the volatile psychoactive and medicinal constituents contained in the plant's oily glandular secretions melt and phase into an aromatic vapor that does not contain the particulate matter (tars) found in the smoke.

Subsequently, the vapor is inhaled in the case of most vaporizers such as the dry extraction and hose delivery as seen in the vapor brothers or vapezilla models, or is moisture
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
conditioned and/or ice cooled in the case of the modular vaporization "tools" and "system" approach. With less or no smoke formed, and a cooler temperature, the irritating or harmful effects of smoke and associated toxins are greatly reduced or even eliminated.

The shortcomings of smoked cannabis have been widely viewed as a major obstacle for approval of crude cannabis for medical users even though many studies clearly indicate that the strong expectorant activity of THC probably compensates for much of the ingested tars in a manner not akin to the smoking of tobacco by causing the user to cough up the tars in mucous discharges subsequent to the smoking. Nevertheless, in response to the concerns several scientific studies have tried to establish whether vaporizers could offer a clinically reliable and safe method of cannabis use. Though vaporizers show great variations in performance, such studies have always found vaporization superior to smoking, and high-end vaporizers used with High Grade Hybrid Cannabis strains containing elevated levels of THC (the medicinal and psychoactive ingredient in cannabis) have been found to entirely eliminate inhalation of undesired compounds in a manner consistent enough for clinical trials. In comparison to cannabis use methods such as eating, vaporization offers the advantages of inhaling THC: rapid onset, direct delivery into the bloodstream, and the possibility to gradually increase delivery until the desired level is reached, in this manner enabling more effective self-dosage.

Health and Medicinal Uses
Regardless of the benefits of medical cannabis, the widely perceived health risks of smoking as a route of administration have been viewed as a major obstacle for the legal approval of cannabis for medical uses, though some studies indicate that the expectorant activity of THC may help the lungs remove much of the inhaled tar through coughing. In response to the concerns, several studies have aimed to establish whether or not vaporizers could offer a clinically reliable and safe route of administration for cannabis. Though vaporizers show great variations in performance, such studies have consistently found vaporization superior to smoking and with best case (high-end vaporizers used with potent cannabis) results showing an elimination of undesired compounds suitable for clinical trials. In comparison to other routes of administering cannabis such as eating, vaporization offers the advantages of inhalation - immediate delivery into the bloodstream, rapid onset of effect, and more precise titration, the ability to more accurately control the dosage to produce a desired effect.

Makeshift and Homemade

Gravity bongs
Gravity bong is a term which covers several variations, including waterfall bongs, bucket bongs, and torpedoes.
The bucket bong is commonly called a bucky in New Zealand. In Canada it is called a pail or aqualung, and the method is respectively called pailing or taking lung hits. It usually consists of the user placing the marijuana in a cone made from a standard bowl or socket set (13 mm) atop a plastic bottle with either a few small holes (2 cm diameter) in the bottom of the bottle, or a complete cut along the bottom of the bottle. The bottle is then lowered into a bucket of water so that only the cone is above the water level. From here, the user lights the cone and proceeds to pull the bottle upwards until the bottle is full with smoke from the marijuana. The cone is then removed by unscrewing the bottle cap, and the user then proceeds to place his or her mouth over the bottle, exhaling all air beforehand, then inhaling as they lower the bottle into the water. This method is especially efficient when marijuana supplies are scarce, but also can burn up marijuana at a very fast pace.

The Waterfall Bong is usually constructed using a drinks bottle with a large hole bored or burned into the bottom. The bottle is filled with water with the user covering the hole with his or her hand, the cone is then inserted into the bottle's top and the marijuana is lit as the user lets go at the hole at the bottom. The water rushing out of the bottle causes the smoke from the burning marijuana to fill it. When the marijuana is fully burnt the user removes the cone and inhales the smoke through the bottle top, the hole at the bottom of the bottle acting as a carb. This method is effective for inhaling large amounts of smoke in one go. Bongs, and gravity bongs in particular, are notable by some for producing a very intense experience.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

A bucket uses gravity alone to pull the cannabis into a chamber. A bottle with its bottom removed (glass recommended, plastic in emergencies) is used as the chamber - in the case of glass, a technique of placing stones or heavy crews into the bottle, re-capping it then placing it into a bag before shaking until the bottom falls off is pleasantly effective. Plastic, of course, is not recommended because it melts, which could damage the user's health or simply ruin their device! The body (neck etc removed) of a larger bottle is used for the container. The larger bottle is filled with water, and the chamber bottle is placed into the water. A 'gauze' (sometimes using a socket to fit the hole but usually not a true gauze, more commonly perforated tin-foil shaped to fit, or sometimes the bottle's lid - in good practice, scraping off the coloured paint, removing the inner plastic seal and shaping and perforating) is then securely placed on the bottle before the cannabis (normally raw, but can be supplemented with tobacco) is burned on. To extract the smoke, the bottle is pulled from the water slowly whilst the cannabis is being burned, with the gravity caused by the enclosed nature of the air trapped by the water sucking the smoke into the vacuum. To smoke the device, the lid is removed and the (raw) smoke is inhaled, sometimes pushing the bottle back into the water, though this causes discomfort with some smokers who prefer to lift the chamber bottle from the container bottle. Due to the quantity and the unfiltered nature of the cannabis the high from this method can be powerful and long-lasting.

A variation on the bucket bong is the lung in which the same technique is used, but a plastic bag (substituting the container bottle of water) is fitted, air-tight, to the bottom of the container bottle. The user grips the bottom of the bag, or sometimes a string is attached, and the bag is pulled out as the cannabis is burned. When inhaled, the bag shoots back into the bottle due to the force of sucking, resulting in the cannabis smoke being forced into the user's lungs - this leads to an intense high but can also be unpleasant and harmful to health. For this reason, 'the lung' (although more practical than a bucket, a waterfall or a conventional bong) is seldom used amongst seasoned smokers. A commercial version is for sale, notably in the drug-tolerant city of Amsterdam.
