The APG Story
THE APG STORY IS NO LONGER IN DEVELOPMENT. IT IS POSTPONED INDEFINITELY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

What is this?

Not too long ago, Hero and Kira started working on the APG Card Game. I had been playing around with a game maker for a while, not really doing anything. I decided that APG has enough inside jokes, references, and general lore to build a game off of. So I started designing an RPG based on APG and Gaia.

S t o r y
The story behind the game.

One day, a day just as average as any other, a special Gaia event was launched, where users were to surf and post around the site, hoping to find the "Crystal" event items. The admins said that the crystals could be traded in for special equippable items. But something went wrong...

When users collected five of the crystals, and went to trade them in...their computer screens would glow, their keyboards would shake, and they would be transported to the world of Gaia.

When these users arrived in Gaia, after an initial panic, they moved to their areas of comfort, some to the town square, others to the casino, and still others to the guild halls. One such guild, the APG, was determined to make a difference in the world..

G a m e p l a y
How you play this dern thing.

APG the Video Game is an RPG, with over 50 playable characters. The player will start out with seven APG mods, and explore the world of Gaia, doing quests for fellow Gaians and finding and bringing home the various members of APG.

It's up to you how you play the game. You can spend your time battling and earning money to get the best equipment and become the strongest fighter, or you can run around doing quests and making people happy, or you can try and find your way back to reality (the ending of the game). If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, this is very similar.

F e a t u r e s
The things the game will have.

Time System
Time doesn't pass realtime in this game, but it does pass. As the days change, so does life in Gaia. Everyone celebrates the same holidays, and on the special ones, you can obtain the special holiday items. (Just like the site!)

Gold Mountain
Play new and exciting games at Gold Mountain and get tickets to buy special items. Just like the site.

Daily Chance
Certain places on Gaia will have Daily Chance chests that refill with new items or gold each Gaian day. Make sure you check them if you're near.

Magical Giftboxes
These mysterious items could be anything! By using this item, you can gain a random item or equipment.

Petitions
Do the shops have really cruddy items? Then start a petition! The more people you get to sign the petition, the more items will be available in stores. For example, at the start of the game, only the basic Gumdrop is available in the food store. You go around and get 25 signatures, and now the shop is carrying Gummi Worms.

Class System
The new class system lets you assign a class to each character. Classes dictate the skills available to the class. Don't worry, you will never have your equipment restricted by character class, and you can change at any time. See the Class System post for more details.

Skill Items
Each class has a variety of skills to learn, but to learn them, you have to find the appropriate skill item. That skill item will teach that skill to the character at any time, but they will only be able to use that skill while in the appropriate class.

Want to see what the game'll look like?

VIDEO

User Image
The mystery man is not a real character. I just put him in there to illustrate what events/cutscenes would be like.

User Image
This is the equipment (avatar) screen where you change your character's equipment. All of these items are slated to appear in the game.

User Image
This is the status (profile) screen. As you can see, there are HP and SP bars, which will be present at any place you see the HP and SP displayed. This an almost final version. I still might include an area where you can see what elements you are protected against/use in your attack.

User Image
This is a demonstration of the Chapter start title that you'll see every time you enter a new chapter. New chapters don't affect gameplay, but they do help break up the story.

User Image
The completely redesigned title screen. I think it goes along with the humorous feel much better, and reinforces the whole "Story" theme. The game over screen will also reference this...with the words: "Your Story Has Ended"

WORLD MAP
This is a conceptual picture of how the world map will be laid out. Blue spaces are towns, green spaces are fields. Lighter green spaces are original, created by me. Light blue spaces are water (and thus inaccessible) and black are yet to be created, or dead space.

D e t a i l s
The nitty-gritty of the game.

Stats
Each character has the following stats:

  • Health Points (Hp) - When this reaches 0, you are KO'd.
  • Skill Points (Sp) - Used to power skills.
  • Level (Lv) - When this goes up, your stats go up.
  • Experience (Xp) - This is earned via battles and earning enough ups your level.
  • Strength (STR) - This affects how much damage melee attacks do.
  • Vitality (VIT) - Higher defense means being hit less often.
  • Dexterity (DEX) - This affects how much damage ranged attacks do.
  • Spirit (SPR) - Spirit affects the power of most skills.
  • Agility (AGI) - Agility is how fast you can act in battle.
  • Power (POW) - The power of all equipped weapons. Adds to STR or AGI.
  • Armor (ARM) - The power of all equipped armor. Adds to VIT.

Elements
There are 4 elements in the game. Each is weak to another element.

Fire - Power of heat and destruction.
Water - Power of water and ice.
Earth - Power of rocks and plants.
Air - Power of wind and electricity.

Party
A battle party will consist of up to six characters. You will be able to switch your party and change characters by returning to Guild Hall.

Equipment
There are seven types of equipment. Each character can equip one at a time. Here they are, along with examples.

  • Hand - Ancient Katana, Spirit Falcon, Basic Baseball Bat
  • Head- Dark Halo, OMFG, Coal Gunner Hat
  • Upper - Damascus Armor, Chestplate of Arachne, Red FLEX Top
  • Back - Chyaku Norisu Scarf, Celestial Wrap, Royale Purple Pimpin' Jacket.
  • Lower - Cache Pants, Goth Skirt, Romani Slacks
  • Feet - Hiking Shoes, Beatnik Sandals, Alice's Boots
  • Accessory - Gwee, Baby Seal Slippers, Cig

Items
There are various types of items to use. Here are the types and examples:

  • Baked Goods (Heals HP) - Cookie, Muffin
  • Candy (Heals SP) - Gumdrop, Truffle
  • Drinks (Heals Status) - Smoothie, Soda
  • Skill Items (Teaches Skills) - Dubloon, Dirty Mag
  • Misc. - Magical Giftbox, Skeleton Key

Rules
Please see the wiki for up to date info on this.

Skills
All characters can learn skills from posts. Some posts are one of a kind, so be careful who you give your posts to.

Super Skills
Super Skills have changed! OH NO! They are no longer going to be like limit breaks. I'm still trying to look for another system, but so far it might be: (a) the Super Skill requires all SP to use, (b) it requires a special, expensive item to be consumed, (c) Desperation move, only available when you're really hurt.

Date System
There will be no recorded time, but there will be dates. Dates can be advanced by sleeping at the inn. Sleeping also recovers HP and SP.

F. A. Q.
Questions and their answers.

What type of game is this?
Ever play those old 2D RPGs on the Saturn or PS1? This is what you'll find here. Not the best graphics or sound, but still fun to play. Not a 3D game, unfortunately.

Is this an MMORPG or regular RPG?
It is a completely offline, single-player RPG. However, much of the gameplay is open-ended and you don't have to advance the story if you do not want to. There are quests to do, mini-games, dungeons, to keep you occupied. In this way, it is sorta like an MMORPG. But to be frank, you're going to be playing this alone. But don't be scared to share secrets with people. (Like where you found that elusive Hammi Hat)

What kind of equipment can we get? Can I get a bunch of kick-butt swords?
Most equipment will be based on existing Gaia items. There will also be some petition items included. So you can bash someone over the head with a Pimpin' Cane or protect yourself by putting on your Flashion top. MCs will definitely be more powerful than regular items, and event items will be available with their respective events. Promotions items may also be available.

What program are you using to make this?
The actual game is being made using RPG Maker XP, along with heavy RGSS (Ruby Game Scripting System) modification. Graphics are made using Paint, iDraw, and Photoshop.

What are the requirements?
I'm not sure at the moment, the file size depends on the amount of graphics, sound effects, music, etc., to be included. I will try and keep it under 50 MB., as I want dial-up users to have a chance. As far as I know, Windows IS required to play this game.

Can I help you?
Of course! Unfortunately because of the nature of the project (lots of scripting, changes happening all the time, etc.) I'm not currently looking for people to help me program it. What I DO need help with is ideas, gathering info, and later on, playtesting/balance. I will post here if I need help with things like graphics, music, etc. Make sure and check the Current Issues so you know what I'm looking for at the moment.

What about downloadable content?
I do plan on adding additional content once the initial game is released. Currently I'm planning:

  • HD Music Pack - Containing large amounts of high quality .mp3 and .ogg music, the HD Music Pack is large and not for dial-up users, but will add some quality to those who have fast internet connections.
  • Game Guide - Hopefully I'll be able to release right after the game a Game Guide featuring all the information you need to know, including where to find all the secrets and the stats of all enemies. It will offer a peak into the code of the game as well. Not for those who want a challenge.
  • Expansion - After the first game is released, I plan on working on an expansion pack that will add newer members to the bunch as well as new items, classes, skills, areas, and quests.

C l a s s . S y s t e m
What do you want to be?

Newbie
Command: Basics
The starting class and the most basic. It offers a couple, very weak skills. But there are those that say the Newbie can be the most powerful class. I wonder what they mean?

Alchemist
Command: Alchemy
By finding and then mixing herbs with Bottles of Pure Water, the Alchemist can create a variety of powerful potions for use in battle. But be wary, for only an Alchemist knows how to handle these potions.

Animal Lover
Command: Call Animal
The Animal Lover utilizes their connection with animals to summon creatures to battle to perform a variety of attacks. Animal Lovers are a versatile, but not very powerful class.

Debator
Command: Speech
The Debator is the absolute best at speaking. By stating her point clearly, the Debator is able to manipulate the attributes of her foes.

Gambler
Command: Risk
The Gambler loves to risk all. A Gambler can use a variety of powerful skills, though their effects are often random. Gamblers are a good class, but be careful.

Hero
Command: Technique
The champion of good and an expert at fighting, the Hero can launch powerful physical attack skills that rely on Strength, not Spirit.

Karaoke Singer
Command: Karaoke
The Karaoke Singer can sing...badly. But it doesn't matter, because just the thought of the Karaoke Singer doing his best is enough to inspire his allies. This class specializes in boosting the stats of allies.

Lurker
Command: Reveal
You see them for a bit, and then they just disappear. The Lurker has very powerful attacks, but after using them, they must "lurk" for a certain number of turns. While lurking, the character cannot do anything.

Magic Gunner
Command: Magi-Shot
Utilizing great spiritual training, the Magic Gunner can fire bullets of pure energy from her finger tips. Magic Gunners focus on doing great non-elemental, single-target damage with their Spirit stat. They can even recover their SP in battle.

Ninja
Command: Ninjutsu
A warrior of stealth and cunning, the Ninja uses agility-based skills and attacks to take down his foes.

Perv
Command: Nastiness
What community would be complete without a pervert? Pervs delight in nasty comments and gestures that can inflict negative status effects on the enemy.

Pirate
Command: Pirating
The Pirate relies on booty to win their battles. Pirates are able to swipe gold, as well as launch attacks using the party's gold.

Priest
Command: Pray
Peace is the hardest path, but the Priest follows it nonetheless. She is able to pray for her allies, healing their wounds and curing their problems.

Troll
Command: Troll
You sick of the enemies getting all the fun? The Troll can learn many skills enemy Gaians use and end up throwing it right back at them.

Vampire
Command: Dark Arts
Vampires rely on the power of blood and darkness to use their skills. Many Dark Arts are powerful, at the expense of losing HP.

Wizard
Command: Spellcast
The Wizard specializes in casting powerful damaging elemental spells. Be careful not to make a Wizard mad!
