Reeds are always a hot topic among the woodwinds that use them. There are usually a bunch of topics floating around about them (whether they be questions, advice, polls or general talk), so here is a thread to cover it all! biggrin

I've started to make reeds recently ^^~ They're pretty stress-relieving.

my friend plays the oboe and makes her own reeds. It's quite amazing watching her do it.
I play the clarinet?
with a 2 1/2 reed.(better for fluidity of notes & jazz)

I play clarinet too, and use a size 3 reed. I changed reeds recently and now it sounds really airy...and I don't like it sad

I play Vandoren V-12 reeds strength 3 1/2, but I'm thinking of switching to Mitchell Lurie reeds because I've heard good things about them.

Well, I don't know anyone who uses a Mitchell Lurie brand reed, but i've also heard good things about them.

I use Rico. only brand i'll use. and i'm very specific about my reed cases. i like the ones that open and close like a tiny plastic trumpet case, but they open on the shorter ends. our BD cadet told me it's the best kind of case.

Yeah, because there is less of a chance that you can damage the reed when you put it back in its case.

My band director gives me my reeds for free, and if I somehow get the money for private lessons, I'll be making my own someday.
I use Emerald oboe reeds.

I make bassoon and oboe reeds (bassoon from blanks and oboe from cut cane and 'staples' - aka the cork and tube part). I also make reed cases from brass candy tins and Styrofoam or felt. I use brass because it doesn't rust with moisture like the Altoids tins do. Also, they have a looser seal that allows moisture to escape.

I learned oboe reed making from my mother and bassoon reed making from the contrabassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra (US). I've had to make my bassoon reeds because I like super-resistant ones that just can't be bought. Even blanks are hard to find with enough cane left to get a good reed for me.

I generally recommend that anyone who buys bassoon reeds should at least learn how to change the wires properly and replace them with quality wire (because the silver colored stuff is crap). There is technique to that too though, so if anyone is interested, I'll post a how-to. Learning to tweak one's reeds is really important for anyone serious about music. Even single reeds can be tweaked to make them harder once they've been used too long by trimming the tip a little at a time (while keeping the appropriate curve) until it is strong enough to play again.

Another tip I have is that when reeds start to taste really bad or get moldy, they can be soaked in lemon juice - bassoon reeds go overnight because they're so thick but I don't know how long for other reeds. The acid kills the mold and bacteria without destroying the cane like mouthwash would.
