The growth of spring fascinated a young blue mare, who leaned her head down to investigate every unfamilar flower, and looked up at each new bird. Unfortunately, no matter how graceful one is, neglecting to watch their path tends to lead to embarassment. As Akila soon found, tripping over a dip of the ground and sliding onto her side with a grunted, "Ooof!" The smile on her muzzle was rueful as she picked herself back up, shaking the dirt from her coat and taking stock of the damage.

Ah, Spingtime; when the world came alive with color, energy...and clumisness.

Antony wasn't sure what it was about the season, but it seemed that whereever he went these days, he encountered someone tumbling or sliding or generally slipping about. Maybe it was something in the grass, or everyone had polished their hooves, or maybe they were just too darn distracted by the abundance of spring.

Regardless, watching the blue mare fall was like deja vu all over again, and something that he couldn't refrain from commenting on.

"You ok?"

"Yeah, I'm alright..." Akila's smile turned rueful as she responded to the voice cutting through the clear spring air. Her head turned as she drew a breath to thank the stranger for his concern...and paused as azure eyes widened in a mixture of shock and awe. Kalona wings...but would a true kalona have bothered to ask if she was alright? "I'm Akila and...those wings are amazing."

"Good, good; given how easy it is to break a leg tumbling about, one can never be too sure." Antony's tone was laced with amusement; though his words recognized the potential seriousness of falls, one only had to look at him to know that he wasn't worried at all. But why would he be, when she'd stood up so easily?

He could tell the exact second she looked at him her shock and surprise at seeing him. Not surprising, but slightly frustrating all the same. Then again, brief look of shock aside, there didn't seem to be any negative reactions. He could deal with that.

"Well, they do their bit to further the cause of flight, I'll grant that. It's all that one can hope for in wings, so I'd say they work well enough."

If he didn't have this sort, he's likely have another sort, and they all did the same thing. His just happened to have negative recognition, that's all.

"And it's nice to meet you, Akila; I'm Tony, and it's a pleasure."

"Well, Tony, I'd like to think I'm at least smart enough to avoid areas with footing that tricky. It's not like I've got a familiar following me anymore, ready to get help if I need it." Akila grinned wryly, shaking out her long mane. He almost looked frustrated when she first looked at him...maybe he was hoping for fear? "Surprised I'm not screaming in terror or something? I think if you were truly kalona, you wouldn't have asked if I was alright in the first place. So...there." She stuck her tongue out at him defiantly, scrunching up her face.

"And even you had a familiar, it's doubtful that they would have been able to be much help. For example, if you'd fallen ON the familiar, it would likely need help more than you! That said, being followed around all the time sounds like a real drag, as far as I'm concerned; like being a foal all over again."

Especially if the familiar knew one's parents. Then again, Antony had never had a familiar and his mother's familiar was...elusive, at best. He never saw much of Yzma, and actually preferred it that way.

However, jovial banter went right aside at the mare's following statement; had he been an actual kalona in spirit, that would have truly been a "fighting word" instance. Lucky for the mare she was totally off the mark. Furthermore, he didn't realize she'd noticed the look, meaning that her comment came literally out of left field.

"If I WANTED people run away screaming, I'd go for a much more hardline approach. Screaming has nothing to recommend itself anyway, as it grates on the eardrums and is rough on the throat. That said, do you always greet strangers with piquant sayings?"

The look on his face was one of true amusement as he spoke; it was a strange mare that said such things to an unknown stallion, after all, especially one that looked at all kalona-like.

"It was that or having to stay by daddy...I think you can guess which I'd pick." Akila rolled her eyes, snorting. At least Mai had been rather unobtrusive, not really bothing to come into view unless she was needed. Flicking an ear, she continued, "As I remember, you greeted me. I drew my conclusions from that greeting, as it didn't fit what I'd heard of most full-blood kalonas. If thinking about what I hear is what you mean, then yes, I do."

"There's always the chance that you like your parents enough to not worry about it. Personally, I'd rather not take either, but that's just me. And I don't see why anything that full-blooded kalonas would do matters; one look at my tail, hooves, and lack of horn ought to be that much of a tip-off. And if getting a greeting is reason for you to wonder at not being attacked...I don't think that I'd want to be in your shoes growing up!"

To put it mildly. He might have had to deal with paranoia and slight dementia, but he could take being greeted without worrying!

Then again, he could understand being put off by his wings. It was just weird to be challenged under the guise of BEING a kalona.

Akila raised a brow. "Did I say that I thought you were full kalona? Like you said, just a look at you is enough to convince me of the folly of thinking that. I do wonder how much you might have been teased though...you did seem a little surprised to see me." She tilted her head with a slight smile. "And I did express admiration for the wings, not otherwise."

"The bit about being surprised about you not screaming was what threw me, actually. It was rather random, to be quite honest." He wasn't even going to touch the teasing thing; that hadn't really been relevant as a child, and he certainly didn't feel like discussing his childhood with a stranger anyway.

But she wasn't being unpleasant, if a little 'off' with her word choices. "Regardless, the important thing is that you didn't hurt yourself."

"Well...you looked surprised. Maybe it was just because I fell though, or you hadn't noticed me yet." Akila's ears flicked back and forth in a bit of a worried fashion. Oh, she just seemed to be jamming a hoof further and further into her mouth with each sentence. She wouldn't be too surprised if he got angry with her...she wasn't being very good at getting what she meant out in an understandable fashion. "I'm sorry if I offended you..."
PostPosted: Thu May 10, 2007 11:42 am

"Surprised?" Now it was his turn to be confused. When had he been surprised, and about what? He'd greeted her before she'd noticed him, if her expression had been any indication...

Oh, wait a moment; had she been referring to his reaction to HER surprise? That might make a bit more sense than this current bit of nonsense.

Grinning at their shared ability to completely miss the point, Antony gave Akila a chuckle. "I think that we're talking at cross-purposes. If you're talking about what I'm thinking of, my sigh earlier was the result of your first sight of me. You know, when you're eyes are as dramatic as yours are, it's noticable when they flare. Especially when the flare is accompanied by a pause in conversation. Don't think that I haven't had to deal with the shock of people thinking that they're seeing a kalona before."

Fighting back a blush at the comment on her eyes, Akila tossed her head and laughed lightly. "Well, I'm sure that your wings have caused a few cases of mistaken identity, as eye-catching as they are. Yeah I was shocked at first, but reason intervened. Otherwise..." She grinned. "Do you think I'd be standing here talking otherwise? I'm pretty fast." She skittered sideways a bit, as though to prove her point.

At the mare's blush, one of Antony's brows rose and he grinned slightly in perfect imitation of his father. Did she know that when she blushed, her cheeks turned purple? Probably yes, since that was what color she was...but it was still amusing.

Still grinning, he blew off the wing comments with a mere shrug of his shoulders. "Mistaken identity or not, it does have a tendency to create a few problems. Luckily for me I'm not at all fearsome on my own, so as long as those that encounter me give me even the tiniest benefit of the doubt, I'm good. And who am I to assume anything based on your lack of running?"

He was grinning wider now, his pale eyes sparkling with mischief. "You could be a masochist, a suicidal, or even a realist who knows that legs aren't much when pitted against wings. The options are numerous!"

"I can see how they would." Akila nodded. "My father told me that when he was younger there was only one or two kalona that he knew of...but even those were quite feared. He's much more wary of skinwalkers, though." The mare shrugged and grinned. "Not sure what a masochist is, but I know I'm not suicidal. It's so much easier to find a cliff or one of those skinwalkers if I was, you know? But..." She stuck her tongue out. "Wings aren't much use if your prey's run into a forest."
