Lybrel, a new birth control pill that stops menstruation completely is expected to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration next month. article
o.o
I'm getting on that! XP
The newspaper said studies have found no extra health risks associated with pills that stop menstruation. Some doctors, however, say there has not been enough research conducted on long-term effects.
Article This Article that I came accross states that it is safe to eliminate them, comming to this conclusion from low-dose contraceptives already on the market that reduce your menstration to 4 times a year.
What do you women think? wink Guys if you want to think aobut it, what are your thoughts? Is this a good thing? Do you think that there are some long-term effects? Could it lead to not being able to bear children in the future? What are your oppinions on birthcontrol in general?

I think it is a ok idea. I can't realy see the point the exsiting methods where fine and if you keep having more advanced ways of stopping pregnacys then the are bound to carry more risks...so wahts the point when the excisting methods where fine?

I can't realy see the point the exsiting methods where fine and if you keep having more advanced ways of stopping pregnacys then the are bound to carry more risks...so wahts the point when the excisting methods where fine? Well some women have extremely painful periods (myself included), so I can definitely understand why this would be big news to women like that.
I've been diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovary syndrome for the last four years. I rarely get my periods as it is (last time I got mine was November eek ), but when I do get them, the pain is quite literally crippling. The first day of my period is normally spent literally screaming in pain on the floor.
So to someone like me, a pill that can safely rid oneself from a period all together is a huge deal.
And you don't have to be in that kind of pain to benefit. Many women have at least discomfort with their periods. It might not be a big deal to all of them, but some women still might find the idea worth it. It might not seem like anything great to you, but believe me, so some women it's a miracle.

Drop 30% of your body mass in less then a couple of months and you'll stop. Happens to female olympians in training all the time.

Soldier Scientist Drop 30% of your body mass in less then a couple of months and you'll stop. Happens to female olympians in training all the time. This happens when the fat in a woman's body goes below a certain percentage, and it is not healthy over long periods of time. I could see this pill being used for women who have severe and intractable menstrual pain, but I certainly wouldn't use it for convenience or minor menstrual pain. Anything that disrupts the normal hormonal balance in one's body can over time produce unknown results. I'm sure this pill has not been tested with a large enough base over a long enough time period. I am not a guinea pig. If you are not menstruating you are not producing eggs, so I assume this would be a birth control method as well (sorry didn't check the links). The surest method of birth control is tying the tubes. This is surer than a man's vascectomy because a woman may not be faithful. Or, a man can lie. A woman can use the regular pill, the diaphram (yeah, messy), ask her man to use a condom, and a couple other methods to prevent childbirth. And I don't even like the pill... breast cancer runs in my female line, and I have been told never to use it. So here's another thing I would never use.

I just don't like the idea of messing with the body like that. I think that we have menstration for a reason and if biologically it wasn't supposed to happen the way it does, then we wouldn't have it.
For people with extreme pain I could see this maybe, but I don't like the idea for women who are in a little discomfort.

There is already a birthcontrol method out callled sesanoal or something like that that reduces your periods to 4 times a year... I don't see a problem with getting rid of your cycle all together, especially if you aren't planning motherhood anytime soon. Getting your tubes tied is permanant thing, reversing the process can be dangerous- and is not recomended by many doctors. I think a birthcontrol that can rid of your cycle is wonderful. I'd save on Tampax and Always and help the eviroment by not using them. XP xp

The reason for mestration is to have children - if your not planning that, then there is no problem in messing with the cycle and getting rid of it alltogether, since there would be no reason for you to have a cylce.
I'm not big on saying, "things are there for a reason..." especially when you then follow that by, "well if maybe..." Which is a contradiction in a way..
Of course everything happens for a reason, but if it doesn't have to happen, what's wrong with trying to not let it happen?

Sounds like if you took it for a few years you wouldn't be able to have children. I really doubt they have tested it for decades... It sounds a little scary. sweatdrop

I wouldn't do it. I believe it said they only tested the pill for one year (or maybe I missed the part where it said longer: in all honesty, I only skimmed the article). So if I was considering birth control, I'd probably not go for it.
I guess it is a good thing for people who get really bad cramps, but yet again with those long term effects that might occur....
There probably are long term effects. After a few years of non-stop usage, the body might adapt to not going through the menstration cycle. But I'm no scientist: I just know what I was taught in health and science class. They taught me that people adapt to conditions. neutral
I think it would lead to not being able to have children, but yet again, I'm no scientist. =|
Personally, I don't like the concept of birth control being used for any other reason than medical conditions such as really bad cramps. However, is a better alternative than letting a bunch of women have babies that they don't want/will treat poorly (though I'm not saying that is the case with all women who get "ACCIDENTALLY" pregnant). sweatdrop

It's the implied extrapolation. Any idiot knows that dropping massive amounts of body weight in a short period of time is bad for you.
