Yeah, that controversial song by the British band The Prodigy.
The lyrics: Smack my b***h up Change my pitch up
Is it sexist? Does it promote domestic violence? Or is it harmless?
Have you seen the video, directed by Jonas Akerlund? (Warning- it's rather explicit, contains nudity.) Opinions?

geez. i havent heard of that but stuff like that really pisses me off. scream
why would you honestly want to listen to "music" that contains lyrics like that. from what it sounds like, they probably are treating women like crap in the video huh? if thats the case then who the hell do they think they are?
yeah it sounds pretty sexist to me. and even if i could watch the video, i still wouldnt

Personally, I love the song and I don't think the song is sexist at all.
Even though the lyrics say "Smack my b***h up", there isn't much meaning to it. There's nothing backing it up. Who knows whether "my b***h" even refers to a woman or not? "Change my pitch up"? That doesn't mean anything.
There's been talk that "smack my b***h up" is a term for shooting heroin, or that it has something to do with "creative expression", but I think that's bull. I think the song is making fun of gangsta rap.
I'm a big fan of the video. I don't want to give it away because there's a twist in the ending. But if you watched it, you'd know why it wasn't sexist. I'm not pressuring you to watch it or anything, though.

ooooh. well, the fact that it could have a double meaning involving sexism is bad enough. they dont have to use those phrases anyway. stare I guess thats what really bugs me.
i'll stick to TJO though!

I haven't seen the video, but I seriously doubt there's any intended meaning of actual violence towards women. That's just not part of the subculture they're in. I'm not implicating everyone in the hiphop subculture, I know it's not homogenous, but a line like "bitches ain't s**t but hoes and tricks" is much more likely to actually be sexist than something from the Prodigy. "Smack my b***h up" in this context means the same thing as "change my pitch up"...er, nothing, really...it's just something to dance to.

I don't think it's sexist. I also don't think the lyrics are to be taken very seriously. I have the video downloaded. I love the video. I thought it was amazing.

You will probably assume the person doing everything is a man right? It's actually a pretty cool song and Prodigy is a cool band.

Yodilit If that is the case, I'm all for it. "Gangsta" rap is the most disgusting excuse for music in most cases.i think it used to be really good back when it was all about overcoming "the hood" and a lot of typical black stereotypes. now "gangsta" is sort of viewed as both a cool fashion statement and mediocre rappers who are all in it for the money.
