Joni Mitchell:
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all.

---

He drew a long drag on his cigarette, and snorted, which made him puff smoke like a dragon. It wasn't the most comfortable sensation in history, but he'd gotten used to it a long time ago, and he prefered his own cigarettes to the foul, treated stuff people sold in little paper boxes. Smelled like smoking a combination of outhouse and chemisty set to light up one of those things, though people often gave him an odd look for his hand rolled ones until they realized that it was just good tobacco they were smelling.
Sweeter smelling, cleaner even, than the smoke from regular cigarettes, he enjoyed the smell, and the way it covered the faint smells from the city. He wanted to get back out to the country again, but things were a lot more complicated 'out here' than he ever remembered them being. It was a damned shame really. You could barely cuss without someone throwing a fit, let alone what had happened when he'd said 'redskin'....it made him hesitate to use other terms, which was, though he didn't know it, an very fine idea.
Everything was just too damn wierd. Like here for example. Sitting in an outdoor table in the corner of an coffee restaruaunt. (An entire restraunt dedicated to coffee??? And then they look at you funny when you ask for 'black'.)....
People were still glaring at him for smoking, but no one was saying anything, just sitting further away. That worked just fine by him.

Harlequin cirtainly felt the fool just at this moment..
Kira had insisted they go out, and he didnt really like leaving Harlequin behind, as the 'card' had a habbit of wandering around by himself and losing himself in the maze of streets near where they lived, it wasnt like the labyrinth, there were no clues to help you in the city.
He felt out of place, horribly so with his strange hat and the large yellow flower that he never set down held between his fingers.
He was supposed to be eating, but he just wasnt hungery, he just sat there with a content happy smile on his face, keeping his actually feelings hidden away inside of him, he was happy.. that is what everyone was supposed to think, the fool was meant to be happy.
Kira had asked for happiness, wished for it above everything else in the world..
An orphan, abandoned, alone.. nearly dead.. abused... depressed.. he just wanted to be able to smile..
And So Harlequin was set to look after him.. and here he was, they were more alike that Kira knew, hidden away inside the happy coursier there was a past that he didnt care to be known.. a rare figure himself he found himself in a position where he was a joke.. an amusement..
It was a proud position was it..?
he didnt agree.. but it wasnt his place really. Too many years had passed for him to ever speak out.
No one knew him, all they saw was the smiling fool with the colourful hat and the bright eyes.
A smile to hide the past.
He looked over at Kira who was on the phone, to Chrys probably, he talked to the young man a lot, so that would be nothing unusual.
Harlequin just wished there was someone who, unlike his ward, would see through his happy smile one day.
At least the salad was good.. though somone was smoking...

Bat leaned back in his seat, rocking it back onto two legs with a draconic puff of smoke. The shirt he'd been wearing didn't make him look less so, though he still felt...awkward in a shirt with one sleeve, which left his tattoo visible to the world. He was less comfortable with it than he had been when he got it, it meant a bit more these days, things he didn't like.
Although at least, he reflected, he wasn't quite as eye catching as the young man over at the other table. The one in the crazy clown hat.
Clowns were supposed to make you laugh, but this one didn't look like he was preparing to perform, which begged the question why he was all gussied up like that, when he wasn't doing anything but having a bite. Maybe there was a play that had let out or somethin?
"....Whats with the get up?" He called over, finaly, gnawed at by Curiosity. "Carnival ain't in town....."

Perusian blue eyes flicked over to the speaker, as there was no one else he was likely to be speaking to..
How many other people in this fairly normal restraunt were dolled up like he was...
He was so used to the costume though that it was second nature to be clad in it now. He thought it pretty for the most part, he liked the patterns on the almost poncho like top he wore, and the streaked down make up he wore, the hat he could have done without but it was part and parcel he figured, so it stayed.
It was pretty.. it just.. as this smoking stranger had said.. made him look like he would fit in better in a travelling carnival. Before making any move to answer he cast an appealing gaze on Kira... hoping he'd save him, but his ward was engrossed in the phone call well and truely.. and he sighed.
"Its just my customary attire.." he said quietly in responce, his voice soft and light, a smile slipping onto his face, it was time to take the stage again. He seems aimiable for the most part, or at least he tried to.
"I am Harlequin.." He set the yellow rose that was held between his fingers down on the table and inclined his head.

Bat paused over this information, taking the cigarette from his lips and eyeing the glowing end for a moment before continuing, as though he was stingily measuring his words, as though that rather than his thick accent explained his droped sylables. "Thats some pretty eye catching a-ttire then." He noted, purposefuly drawing out the word 'attire'. The best he could figure was that the young man was some kind of actor, or maybe he was just playing things up a bit, because he sure didn't look happy to be having the conversation underneath his pasteboard smile. The kind very classy people used to get when they noticed you'd just tracked mud three steps onto their big ugly rug.
Still....he'd never been one who could walk away from the temptation to push the envelope just a little, as though daring people to call him on what he himself was trying to hide. He dropped the chair to all four legs with a thud, matched by the scrape of his booted feet hitting the ground as he pulled himself up smoothly, the cigarette put back between his lips to be growled around as he extended a hand to introduse himself.
"Bat King. You act, or somethin?"

"In a manner of speaking.."Harlequin nodded, the polite smile still on his lips, though he had a horrible feeling that that just wasnt cutting it with this fellow, with this, Bat King...
He had a feeling that the man could see more than what was presented, he could see past the surface..
This thought made him shidder a little.
He wasnt used to that, yes.. on some level it was what he had wanted, to be seen as more than the laughing joker, but he wasnt prepared for it to come from a random stranger.
"Sounds like a theatrical name you have there." he stated.
"What do you do with yourself then, Mr Bat King..?" He asked, the name was ironic.
He was after all, the kings fool.
Did fate find some amusment with him like the rest of the world did?
It was unseemly but never mind, he owuld smile through it, that was his way.
He just wanted to direct attention away from his own occupation.

Bat pulled a slight face, though it was difficult to tell exactly what Harlequin had said to make his expression take that somewhat sour turn, or if maybe it was just the cigarette pursed in his lips.
"I dun see how it's theatrical...." He noted, perhaps that was it? And added. "...Not much right at the moment." He admited. "Not a lotta call for my normal line 'a work. Not that I can find." It wasn't exactly an answer, but neither had Harlequins been.

"That sounds ominous.." the jester noted, quirking an eyes brow slightly, lifting a hand to curl a lock of his long blonde hair around his finger,
"You make yourself seem a lot more..d ark and dangerous, well suiting your name I suppose.." he smiled slightly again, this one actually reaching his eyes, the slightly sour man entertained him it seemed.
"You dont see how its theatrical..? Bat King..? It inspires all sorts of bizare images, vampires, royalty.. Its a unusual name in itself, though I presume its a shortened version of somthing else, however it does strike me as the kind of name somone who wished to hide a past might think.. and with your ominious answer to my other question, I feel you have supported that hypothesis somewhat.." he smiled slightly and reached out a hand, picking up his spritza and sipping it, his eyes staying fixed on Bat.

"Vampires?" Bat noted, with an raising of his eyebrows and a abrupt snort of laughter. "I aint no vampire. An' King's just the family name." Perhaps he had sounded a bit ominous, which amused him. He'd never thought of his name in such light. It was though, a shortened version of something. Bartholomew actually. He hated Bartholomew. Feeling like they were playing some sort of odd Poker, he shifted the Cigarette in his mouth slightly and exhaled another jet of smoke, thinking before he offered.
"I used t' ride Shotgun for folks on the move. Your turn."

((XD I just saw what elf you got! You got my favorate one! XD congrats! I can't wait to see him played!))

"I dance a pretty number for the fops at court.." He added, his tone tinced with a lilt of acide, this was obviously not a good point to call him on,
"They laugh and giggle like simpering fools, and have the nerve to call me the fool..?" He looked down at his glass, setting it down after a moment, not trusting himself to hold it as his knuckles were tinged with white.
His profession, his.. standing was not one that pleased him greatly, the laughing stock for no reason other than he had been selected at birth, some birthright!
If he had had the choise, had he wanted to amuse people for a living it might have been easier to bare, but as it was it was nothing to the like.
"I think your past has a more glamourous story to tell than my own.." His bizzare costume was explained at least..

"...Aint nothin glamorous about shootin' people. Nor gettin shot at. Or shot." Bat snorted, shaking his head slightly, though Harlequin's comment made him think of something a little bookish man had said once.
"Hey someone said somethin like that once. I don't got it right but it was somethin like: "People see that their nose crooked and they say it's the mirrors fault...something like that, eh?"
For a reason he couldn't imediately explain he felt a tinge of guilt at saying this, as though maybe he were also guilty of such behavior, and studdied the back of his own hand with an furrowed brow.
"....Well I aint a fop, and far as I can tell you aint a fool. You do look like a man that needs a drink though."
PostPosted: Tue Jun 12, 2007 2:12 am

"I never insinuated you were a fop.." he said quietly, his his faily long, feminine fingers curling around the stem of his wine glass, the bubbles inteh spritza clinging to the sides of the inside, it would have looked better if it had been fine crystal, but who was he to pick.
"I see your point though.." He smiled slightly, it wasnt a happy one though, and he flicked his eyes down tot he pale amber licquid he had been sipping.
"My problems are my own.. we all bring things upon ourselves.. and I completely concur that when we see problems we shouldnt try to blame other people for them.." He smiled slightly.
"Thank you for making that clear to me... and also, I have a drink.." he gestured in the slight manner of a toast to 'Bat'
"But thank you for not thinking I'm a fool, even though you did just help me realise that I am one through my own volition.." he smiled slightly again, once again not able to make it reach his eyes, he prefered to just smile it off, he shouldnt let his problems fall on other peoples shoulders.

"I was sayin' I aint one of them snoot-suits." He gestured vaguely in reference to one of Harlequins earlier comments. "But there also aint anything wrong with having another drink once you're finished with that 'un." He pointed out, which apparently in his eyes was not only reasonable, but normal. Refusing to be bought an drink? Madness!
He himself had only a passing appreciation over the difference in how wine looked in a crystal glass versus normal glass, being just as happy if it had been served in a tin cup, just so long as it was served. Still, he raised his own glass, probably whiskey by the color and the shake of the glass, and downed what he was drinking.
His own fingers were surprisingly faintly delicate. A little long, which made his otherwise rough, calloused hands look deceptively effeminite, and his motions a little more fluid, but his serpentine grace was an odd clash with the rest of him. Like two strangers stuck in an elevator, it elbowed uncomfortably with his rough manerisms, rough skin and strong lined features.

Harlequin smiled slightly.
"I'm afraid it wouldnt be so good for me to have another drink, I cant really hold my alchohol very well... besides, I dont really have the money to afford another one." He let his hand drop from the glass to brush over the yellow rose on the table for a moment.
This man was definately somone strange, what was it about him..? There was somthing that didnt seem to fit, it was almost as if somone had lost the last piece of a puzzle, and just made a new one.. only the puzzle was wood... and the new piece out of card...
It was a strange.. it really was.
And he just couldnt work out what it was.
He shook his head slightly, he was sure that staring avidly at somones hands was a rather unusual way to behave.

"Well I was offering to buy but thats your call." He shruged slightly, glancing away before it slowly dawned on him that Harlequin was staring, then snorted loudly and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Like I said...your call." He grumphed, uncertain what to say, and since he couldn't exactly figure out a way to call the man on staring at his hands.
