List all of your favorite sci-fi books.

I have read a few but none are my favorite as of yet. I prefer horror books over sci-fi. No offense was meant by that.

The Dune series - Frank Herbert
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein (Yes that's where I got my screenname)
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams

Those are just the ones off the top of my head and my absolute favorites. sweatdrop

Do you concider Eragon or Eldest a sci-fi book? Cause I love those

I can never really separate Sci-Fi and Fantasy so a few of those may creep in.

I read a lot (about 75 books per year on average and most are pretty good) so I will just list the first things that come to mind

My most recent reads are clearest to me so I will start with those.

Everything by Jim Butcher (Furies of Calderon, Academ's Fury, Censor's Fury (this setting is sometimes called Codex Alera) and then the Dresen Files Books: Storm Front, Fool Moon, Grave Peril, Summer Knight, Death Masks, Blood Rites, Dead Beat, Proven Guilty, White Knight). He has a really great writing style full of plot twists, turns, double backs, and convolutions. The stories move quickly and are probably the most fun reads I have ever had.

Eragon and Eldest

Caves of Steel, Stranger in a Strange Land, and Starship Troopers were all good from classic sci-fi authors (I love that Stranger in a Strange land and Starship Troopers were written back to back by the same guy but espouse completely different value and philosophies)

The Amber Series and Lord or Light were both good (Zelazny was a stylistic master, but you had to stay on your toes to keep up with him sometimes)

Lord of the Rings and the Hobit will always have a special place for me.

Diamond Age and Snow Crash are both really great cyberpunk reads.

The Mission Earth Decalogy, and Battlefield Earth were both pretty good reads also (Scientology ties aside of course)

If you are willing to go really old-school (pre general acceptance of relativity wink ) The lensman series and skylark of valeron are both very good (although a little hard to find).

Harry Potter of course. (it is just in a whole different league from anything else I have read that was published during my lifetime, like Lord of The Rings it will be a true enduring classic)

The Wheel of Times Series was pretty good (got off to a great start stalled out for a couple thousand pages, but showing signs of life again in the last two books, a good series but not as much so as some claim).

Wizard's First Rule was an excellent story and complete in itself (although I felt the rest of the series was pretty poor, I stopped reading after the forth book)

I really like some of the Bruce Covel stories I read when I was a kid (My teacher is an Alien)

Everworld and Animorphs also fall into the category of stuff I liked when I was younger, although I must say the K.A. Applegate just can't seem to do even a semi-decent job at ending a series.

Niel Gaimon is a great writer. Neverwhere, and American Gods come to mind as two really good stories he wrote.

The Nightside series and Hawk and Fisher stories including Blue Moon Rising and Beyond the Blue Moon by Simon R. Green are good reads.

The Otherworld novels by Tad Williams are very good (although it does drag for a little bit towards the middle end) his willingness to take on the implication of technology on human existance really remind me of some of the old classic writers.

Ender's Game was also a really great book (Speaker for the dead was ok, and Xenocide really just lost me though).

Dune was great (although I never read the sequels/prequels)

I could probably keep going for while but I need some sleep and guess this is a long enough list for casual discussion. Lots of great books out there though.

Also read Jim Butcher it is fun and addictive.

My absolute favorite Science Fiction book is "Riddley Walker", by Russel Hoban. It's set in a post-apocolyptic society in England, and alas, we humans barely speak English anymore. We don't understand exactly what happened except there was a big fire in the sky and we used to know more than we do now.

The book is written in the first person by Riddley Walker, one of the few people to read and write. He tells his life story, and he experiences the most profound event of his time... a rediscovery of some of the old technology. But on a very primitive basis. It's well worth reading, though the English written is rather difficult to understand at first.

My second favorite is "A Chronical for Liebowitz", another post apoclyptic story but this one involving the Catholic Church. It's set in America, mostly in the Southwest. It has depth to it particularly in the religious area... you don't have to be Catholic to enjoy it. It has black humor, political wars and an amazing ending. Well worth the read.

Can you tell I was raised to duck and cover in my schoolroom, under the desk? LOL.

I'd have to say that the Ender Series by Orson Scott Card is my favorite sci-fi series. But the Guardians of Time Trilogy by Marianne Curley is a close second. 3nodding

Yeah, I read more fantasy than I do sci fi, but that's ok...right?

Anything by Anne McCaffrey is amazing.
Eragon and Eldest are really good, but I think they're more fantasy than sci fi...
Garth Nix is good. His Abhorsen series has just enough science to be considered sci fi (if you squint and turn your head sideways).
Anything in my library. Seriously, we have a room just filled with sci fi stuff...(okay, maybe not. Half of it, though. The other half are my mom's historical romances, but we can ignore those.)

Yeah, I can't really list any off the top of my head, so...this is the end of this post.

I enjoy suspense, fantasy, and science- fiction, but certainly not that of
the horror genre. If you're curious to know of my likes, take a look at
the interest tags that are listed, in my profile.

I enjoy Sci fi, fantasy, horror, suspense.......

I guess my favorite sci fi book is Time Enough for Love by Heinlein.
It is an old book, but says alot about people. Fav authors: Heinlein, Asimov, Zelazny.

As far as fantasy goes, It is definitely easier to list Authors...
Anne McCaffrey, Ursula K. Leguin (Earthsea series), Piers Anthony, Tolkien,
and of course the Harry potter books!

I can read a paperback a night, so it is hard to pick favorites. I am going to have to read some of the ones you all have posted- Haven't found anything good on my own in awhile!

I don't read much sci-fi, so by default my favorite is Cell by Stephen King. It's apocalyptic, a government conspiracy sends a wave through cell phones that basically re-writes the hard drive of the human mind. I won't spoil it for you, but it's pretty good. I'm going to read The Stand (the government unleashes a deadly disease on the earth) soon, and I might like that one better. Oh! *smacks forehead* Firestarter! (The government experiments with drugs and the results are a little girl with pyrokinetic abilities). I think it's better than Cell by a long shot. Most of these are sci-fi/horror, but....oh well. ^^
