I've only read the original book, and I loved it. I much prefer that version of the story and characters to the musical/2004 movie, but it kinda makes me sad that no one I know in real life agrees with me. My mom read the book, and said it was really badly written and then my sister (not a young sister either - or she might have an excuse. She's 30something) started it and wouldn't read any more, saying she hated it as well. And none of my friends will even look at it (though most of them don't like the movie either XD, they're just phantom-haters in general ).

Well, you have Gaston Leroux's novel that started it all. But there are like a buttload more that twist the story or even make sequals.
"Phantom" Susan Kay
"Phantom of Manhatten" Frederick Forsyth
"The Angel of the Opera" Sherlock Holmes Mystery
"The Phantom Cat of the Opera" David Wood
"Behind the Phantom's Mask" Roger Ebert
"The Phantom of Paris" Gwenith M. Vehlow
"Progeny" Becky Meadows
"Journey of the Mask" Nancy Hill Pettengill
"Maskerade" Terry Pratchett
"The Phantom of the Soap Opera" Judi Miller
"Night Magic" Charlotte Vale Allen
"Phantasy" Becky L. Meadows
"Angel of Music: Tales of the Phantom of the Opera" Carrie Hernandez
"Angel of Music" C. M. Bernadette
"Phantom of the Opera" David Bischoff
And I'm sure there are more, but that's all I could find right now.

Woah...that is a lot of books. The Phantom Cat of the Opera sounds wild! And the Roger Ebert book sounds quite fascinating. And...just wow. Now I wanna go and read them all.

"The Phantom Cat of the Opera" is basically the original story told in a version using cats. I think it's a children's or young adult book. Roger Ebert's book is basically about a man playing in a West End production of The Phantom of the Opera and all the odd incidents he gets in with a murder and being a celebrity.

I love the original Leroux novel, but I must admit that I haven't read any other version. I must a get a library card, at once!

Has anyone read "The Phantom of Manhattan" by Frederick Forsyth? It is a great book detailing what might have happened after that faithful night down in Erik's lair... it is sad in the end but a must read (I think) and is really good!

I personally don't care for the book. Mr. Forsyth really ruined my opinion of him personally with his opinions on how much of "and idiot Leroux was" and praising Mister Webber instead. The book itself had many weak points and things that I'm sure would've been better left out of the book. I believe a lot of the characters are rather OOC and you barely get to see Raoul which I think is stupid because he is married to Christine. My opinion in a nutshell is I don't care for the book, but others might.

Weak characters, horrible narrative thread, and mediocre writing at best, especially when it came to the dialogue.

I had one really in depth one that took my opinion chapter-by-chapter, but I'm not sure if DL removed the thread or what.

I already did. Oh well. *shrug* Believe me, if I have to I'll call upon my supressive memory and write a long a** opinion from what I can remember. But that's only if people are being morons about the book.
