A Murder of Angels
Magic, simply defined is using the power of your will to effect change in yourself or the world around you.

Basically, You're not physically changing anything, but the power of your mind creates a sort of cause and effect thing in the world. I good example is concentrating on healing a person, and your spiritual energy will aid their energy in rebuilding the injured part of their body faster than normal.

You can use power from within yourself, from God or the gods (or other spirits), or from the world and the energies embedded in plants, stones, the elements, etc.

This really made me think. Nurses and doctors focus their energys on healing the patient. Most care about people; why else would they choose their job?

Another thing is different types of magic. I guess like Christianity, we have to break down everything into different types. Maybe its a human tendacy?

Anyways, if any of you magicans over their can at least write in a way for us to understand magic, it'll be appricated.

The problem (or blessing depending on how you look at it) is that magic is viewed in different ways even among those who claim to practice it. Generally, what MoA wrote pretty much hits the nail on the head at least for what appears to be the more dominant school of thought on the issue. I'll put this in mundane terms for you though.

Human beings underestimate a whole lot of things. Whether or not magic operates on any 'supernatural' or 'paranormal' level, plain and simple, the formulas magic uses come right out of psychology. One could say that preforming magic is a form of self-help. It puts you in a frame of mind that gives you both the willpower and direction to effect changes in yourself or those around you. All of the rhyming words, candles, incense, whatever, are all simply means to that end. You know that saying that much of what you get out of life isn't what happens do you but what you do with what happens do you? Outlook is an extremely powerful thing. If you learn to change your frame of mind - your perception - at will that is an extremely powerful tool.

I could say a bit more on this subject, but I should be getting to bed for today!

Magic[k] is the act of causing change in conformity with will.

It can be psychic(involving spiritual energies of the earth/yourself/gods), or just psychological.

I perform a Destruction Ritual or Lust Ritual, I'm generally looking for the latter, but would love for it to be psychic.

With Compassion Rituals I am looking for the psychic kind.

I am almost certain that both work because there are times I can:
Smell my deceased step granpa's pipe smoke in the winter, outside.
I get a butterfly feelin' in the morning sometimes, which Im guessing is my other deceased step grandfathers spirit hangin' 'round.
I get visions in my sleep that will come true months or weeks later.
I read peoples minds on accident quite frequently.

Since I saw this thread, thought I would give what a sect of my beliefs say on magic[k]

Uzoma: The school of Ilmarinen. This is a subdivison of the followers of Uzoma.

There are two universes. The first; is the world of magic[k]. That world was created through the accrument of possibility. Once that had been created, then the raw stuff (There are two schools of thought on this, some say that it is magick itself, whereas, others say that it is antimatter.) built up, until it started leaking through into another universe. The material universe. In the beginning, the material universe was filled with nothing but emptiness.
Upon reacting with the material universe, magic[k] (or antimatter) turns into a force, ray or particle. The first thing that was created was heat, and through this; matter, through the crucibles of the Suns, that gave the universe it's birth. After this, the magic[k] turned into all the things we know today. Forces, Particles and Rays. After this, life was created. Matter was used to create it, and evolution was instilled in it. and magic[k] turned into its most powerful symbiosis; the mind and the soul.
Magic[k] works like this. The soul is that through which magic[k] is accrued, the soul cannot be seen by normal means, as it is not made of matter or rays, but is rather like a receptor for magic[k]. The mind controls the physical part of the body, to use magic[k], one simply must believe it is there, have the talent and strength to use it, and have the right kind of soul. It is easiest to use magic like this. The soul collects it, the mind directs and roughly shapes it, it, the mouth fully shapes shapes and it, and the hand refines and directs it into the force, ray, or matter that you wish. However, it is possible to take one or more of these factors away, until the soul collects magic and the mind directs, shape and refine it. That is how magic[k] basically works. Others belief or disbelief also projects out from themselves, so it's easier to use with other users than with disbelievers. It is easiest to change magic[k] into a force, and hardest to change it into a particle. All things use magic up at a steady rate, to remain stable. It is easiest to use magic[k]s that don't have an immediate or obvious effect, usually through ritual.

This is NOT what I believe.

I cannot say it as sophistically as you did and I really admire you. But magic is mostly about faith. If you do not belive into magic you cannot see or feel it. I do not believe in wicca charms or whatever these "witches" say. I help people with herbs and those sayings and "rituals" are there just to persuade people to belive in their healing. Magic is a lifestyle in our age. It means helping people and respond awkward question like: "Do you really drink blood?" or "Can you do a love charm for me?" These are stupid. People who really do believe in this, would never say something like that.
I have not explained it much but this is my point of view. Magic is a whole life studying about human body, herbs and wise. It is not a romantic and simply life.

What is magic? My stage act, where I make various small objects levitate, then re-enact my heroes (Penn & Teller), and burn an American flag wrapped in the Bill of Rights (or do I?), babbling on about how "even though the flag is gone, the Bill of Rights remains", revealing that, while I made the flag vanish in a fireball (but not really), the Bill of Rights remains unharmed.

In all seriousness, the idea of magic is awful nice, even sexy. But one can't will one's head back on after a decapitation, if you know what I mean.

I think that lots of instances of spiritual magic can be more readily explained through knowledge of how the brain interacts with the body, the same way we now know that tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon, and not a spiritual teenager stroking himself in perfect rhythm.

And so on.

Magic is the art of using spells to invoke supernatural powers to influence events. This is the same for every culture that consists primarily of magic, and even in history. Yet these supernatural powers and events are fundamentaly different, more or less. Magic is the spiritual part of all things - that make the universe. Most of the time we are unaware of the magic around us and this is why magic has been often been referred to as the occult, which means "concealed". So when something wierd happens we often put it down to coincidence.

Magic is often viwed in negative terms because of this. But it's important to know that there is positive magic as well as negative magic. Like all things in life everything has an opposite: without joy there'd be no sorrow, without evil, no good; and so on. I don't believe in "black magic" or "white magic", the same for "black witch" or white witch". Magic is a whole, even if it has positives or negatives, it's still one and the same. Magic does not discriminate nor does it stick by society's rules and cultures. Magic is older than us, just like time. When I say this I mean that even if you perform a blessing it can have negatrive effects. I don't believe that anyone should just do magic straight away. That'd be like riding a motorbike without a helmet! It can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Yes this has alot to do with karma, but don't forget, karma is just apart of magic. It just depends on how you view magic.

There are three forms of magic Arcane,Divine and Imperial

Arcane is magic that the world around you creates or you create
Divine magic is magic given by gods, spirits etc
Imperial comes from the imperial bloodline and is used by the empress and her closest relatives
there are hundreds of magic types but each one falls under the three catagories and has a good, bad and gray side

Humans cannot use true magic unless they have a refugee anscestor
in that case you would be hunted down by the popes renegade HUNTERS who have killed all but 20 of the gifted humans on earth
