So I'm posting this in here 'cause Hairspray is a musical about a big girl xp
Also, I'm a big girl, and I want help!
If you don't know by now, I work at a movie theater and I'm a part of the promotions committee... as much as I dislike the way it's handled, I'm always very invested in the success of the projects we take on (I spent 77 hours off the clock to do work for Nightmare Before Christmas, 33 hours of it was painting windows).
So right now the group has decided to work on Pirates of the Caribbean (not that I mind, I've insisted on painting the windows for it heart ) but when the managment points out that our actual project we'll be focusing on is Hairspray, nobody seems interested sad Well, other than me and my plus-sized manager. I have trouble believing we're only more interested in it 'cause we're into musicals, the 50s/60s, and that we're into the promotion of big girls as beautiful... but I wonder why other than everybody wants to go with the easy one.
Hairspray is a mandatory promotion with a competition. We won the contest for Nightmare Before Christmas, I want us to pull a win again (not only for the money, 25,000 cash prize to the first place winners--to be split up amongst the committee hopefully by effort, I also feel it helps promote bigger girls in a positive light and size acceptance.)
The only problem is, I've never seen the musical myself, and I'm not quite sure what all we can do that my theater will allow/ find a way to fit in the budget/ that might interest people and bring them in. Our manager has hinted at another local branch throwing a sock hop out in front of their building, so obviously that idea is kinda out gonk I'm supposed to watch the (I suppose original) movie Thursday with co-workers in order to brain storm... but I somehow doubt how helpful that will be when we watch it and are expected to come up with ideas right then.
So has anybody seen the musical who might have suggestions? Or do they know what might draw them/their friends and family in to see the movie? I plan on painting the windows for this too, but other than that I'm not sure what to do sad I just want some really good possible ideas (even if you've never seen the movie/musical, feel free to give ideas, I'll throw them out if I don't think they'll work or go along with the movie once I see it)
I'm only asking 'cause I figure maybe somebody in here has seen it or might be excited at the idea of a movie about a bigger girl and want to help get it out there to the public xp
If you've never heard of it and want to know more, here's the website for the movie: here
The website for the broadway production is here.

I've never seen it either, but maybe you can find a transcript online that you can skim through before Thursday?

I've actually downloaded some of the songs, and I'm even more excited about it now whee
Just a few snippets...
*cough* Long... snippets... sweatdrop
From Big, Blonde and Beautiful: "I offer big love With no apology How can i deny the world The most of me
I am not afraid To throw my weight around Pound by pound by pound Because i'm Big, blonde and beautiful There is nothin' 'bout me That's unsuitable
No one wants a meal That only offers the least When girl we're servin' up The whole damn feast "
"Now, don't you sniff around For something fluffy and light I need a man who brings A man-size... Appetite " And from Without Love: "Once i was a selfish fool Who never understood I never looked inside myself Though on the outside, i looked good!
Then we met and you made me The man i am today Tracy, i'm in love with you No matter what you weigh 'Cause...
Without love Life is like the seasons with No summer..."

I saw the movie a couple of years ago. The plot was kind of stupid, but Rikki Lake was amazingly cute as Tracy Turnbland.

lol, I'm likely going to push to have somebody dress up as Tracy Turnbald, and if I'm still there in July, I'm probably going to insist it's me unless a cuter fat girl comes along (pfft, not even possible, I know
Just my hair might be too long for the beehive hairdo by then gonk

I'm excited just to see John Travolta in drag! That and the other message of the film, the fight for racial equality.

I saw the musical three years ago when it was touring. I really love the musical, it's really bouncy, energetic and fun. But you should know that the movie isn't necessarily about chubby girls, it's just a minor aside that creates conflict between Tracy and Amber, and the greater theme is racism and discrimination. But if you're looking for design ideas. It has to be as corny and as kitchy 50's as possible. Use extremely bright colors, bright pinks, baby blues, lime greens, lots of glitter. I love "Without love" it's one of my favorite songs ever, and the one song that always manages to put me in a good mood. I wouldn't have a clue how to promote it though. It's a really quirky movie, and might not appeal to the mass mainstream like the well established POTC trilogy. Here's a reel of the Tour cast if it helps inspire anything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuvXq6l00y0

I actually wasn't familiar with the movie until now (despite the fact that many of my gay male friends adore the original), but I finally checked it out and I'm very excited! I still haven't seen the original film, so I'll have to do that too. But the new version looks pretty cool. Yay for size-positive movies and movies that address racial issues too 3nodding

Wasn't it set in the 60s, though? I heard another branch is doing something like a sock hop, which is 50s and that doesn't make sense to me xp 50s was more quiet and everything. And I've kept listening to Without Love whenever I'm at my computer lately xp
Yeah, the thing is we need to come up with a really great idea. When some big-wig in the company screened it he said he thought it was going to appeal to a lot of people. The thing is, what's the point of promoting Pirates when everybody knows about it and is going to see it no matter what? We still want to do fun stuff with it, but nothing we do is really going to draw in more customers... we're wanting to draw in more customers with Hairspray, and I really want this to be good 'cause I'm a perfectionist.

The movie says 1962, the musical doesn't specify, but it had to be the early 60s, while the bubblegum pop variety shows were still very popular, and it would have ran alongside the beginnings of the counterculture movement. I think it'd be best to find some way to capitalize on the music. The music is incredibly well written and catchy, so if you can get people to hear the music somehow, it might hook them in. Though you kind of have two built in audiences already: those familiar with the musical or movie, and the yonger, easier to bait zac efron fangirls. .....hey how about a "protest"?

Hrm, but what would we protest?
Other than my co-workers and I protesting poor pay for what we do, and I'm getting up to $7.20 an hour (after 3 years, you start out at $6).
....Hrm, fangirls you say?
