It was a lovely day out on the lake. The waters were calm and crisp, and the sun was in such a position that it didn't get in Alice's eyes.

For there she was, out in a little boat. A parasol laid behind her, keeping the sun off of her blonde locks. She had a cup of tea in her hand, and was sipping at it through a curly straw. In her lap was a picture book-- one was never too old for one of those.

((XD Love the title!))

Down along the steep lake shore, something sparkled in the sunlight. It seemed to patrol the shoreline almost boredly, every now and then digging up bits of dirt and mud. The object continued to shift this way and that, occasionally dragging itself through the ground to make long, winding grooves when it tired of randomly milling about.

At one certain spot, however, it paused in midair, appearing to levitate about a foot above the ground. There was no question about it. The thing was alive. And it had just spotted Miss Alice merrily floating along in her little boat.

Seemingly intrigued by the charming little girl, the iron hook hovered closer for a better look. It politely kept its distance, as if afraid to disturb her, until it managed to catch a glimpse of her reading material.

A picture book?! James shuddered, both physically and mentally. What has the world come to? And here I thought I'd finally come across someone intelligent for once! he huffed to himself.

I haven't seen any other children spending their day with some occupation as literate as reading... Angrily, his thoughts travelled back to all the children he had already met within the Magic Kingdom. A samurai, a fae, a gypsy, even a witch! None of which had ever shown the ex-pirate captain even the slightest interest for any sort of books. At least this child seemed different.

((I'm so sorry, Kaze, I have to go for tonight, but I'll talk to you tomorrow, 'kay? Thanks for starting the rp!!! heart ))

Alice didn't think much of the digging and clanking noises, she was far too interested in reading about nonsensical things... or, looking at pictures of nonsensical things. Labyrinths that lead to nowhere, gardens that grew without human aid, and animals that stood upright and talked with marvelous manners.

Well, she had seen some of the latter, but that wasn't the point.

Anyway, when she glanced up, she saw the hook floating and darting about, almost angrily.

"Curious," she mused as she reached her fingers into the water, trying to float closer.

Some girls would scream at the sight of a floating hook, but not Alice.

"Hello."

((Sorry, I messed up on my last post. XP I edited it slightly. Grammer, color, and added a sentence or two. Nothing major.))

The inquisitve captain, despite his disgust, found himself exposed as the girl spoke. He froze, and it was several seconds before he realized she must have been referring to him.

Regarding the child, he noted she was quite cute, actually, now that he could see her face. Something about her reaction, mannerisms, and accent struck him as alarmingly familiar. The trouble was he was unable to pin precisely why.

Her neat, elegant posture and appearance impressed the levitating object, though it signaled nothing to indicate such. As she leaned over to paddle herself nearer, perhaps as curious as Hook himself, he hesitated before floating over the rest of the way. James was not a patient hook.

It was evident the girl was a dreamer. If she had been paying attention, she might have discovered her hand-paddling wouldn't have gotten her anywhere relatively quickly. Introductions were always wearisome for him, but it was the proper thing to do in this sort of situation, and he had always been taught to go through with what was proper. He just wanted to get it over with.

Good day, my dear, he greeted, in the rare case she might have understood telepathy. It was annoying; how did she expect him to say hello without a mouth? He dared not scratch up the wood of the boat as he would otherwise have intended; there was a good chance it would sink if he carved too deep. There didn't seem anything in the little boat that would have been useful, except the book. Dare he carve that up and risk the wrath of the little girl?

No. He had learned the wrath of little girls the hard way. He wasn't about to invoke the wrath of this one, however polite she seemed. Erm...you wouldn't happen to have a quill and some ink with you, would you?

Almost ready to give up hope, the little hook brightened as they floated by an elevated part of the steep, muddy bank. He dashed forward eagerly to etch his carefully practiced cursive into the soft dirt.

"Greetings, mi'lady. I may be small, but I assure you, I'm not what I seem. My name is James Matthew Hook. And who, might I inquire, would you be?"

It was the most he had scrawlled in a long time, and by far the neatest. Since his discovery of using his tool-shape to his advantage, James' messages had started as vicious, almost illegible scratches. However, with time, he had been able to improve his control and learned to carve with a mastery similar to his past elegant handwritting.

When he finished, he hovered beside Alice, admiring his own handiwork and wondering what she would make of it. She wasn't like most little girls. Perhaps she would understand his situation.

"Oh! You must be an item, some of my brothers and sisters were items too, once," Alice smiled at him before looking back at the cursive, "My, you have very neat handwriting... let's see..."

She read over the writing with her blue eyes before sitting up straight, "It's nice to meet you, Sir Hook, I am Alice Liddel Taco-Blades. .... You may call me Alice, however. I'm afraid I'm not too fond of my new last name."

"It is a lovely day out, would you care to sail with me? The grass was too muddy for croquet and my musket's currently getting repaired. So I thought that today would be nice for reading...."

She held up her book and blushed, "Well, I have to admit, I prefer looking at the pictures..."

((>< Just curious, thought it's really none of my business...are you planning to rp Wendy all by herself in that PRP?))
Brilliant. What else would I be? the hook pondered dully, though somewhat pleased the girl had established a connection. Most people probably wouldn't even have been able to guess what he was. Brothers and sisters, mm? So you've never been one?

By referring to her 'siblings', Hook assumed she meant the children under her same guardian...much like Puck and Esmeralda were also under the care of his guardian. However, he could never think of Puck as a 'brother'. Nevertheless, he hadn't realized there were children who didn't start as items. Puck and Esme had each gone through the same phase.

He beamed inwardly at her compliment of his careful cursive. I suppose it is improving rather quickly. Though it's not like I have much else to do than to practice. Disarmed by the child's sweet smile, he drifted around beneath her parasol somewhat cheerfully. 'Sir' is a nice title, dear, but I'm not a 'sir'. It's 'Captain'. But...my, what a long name. You must be of a very renowned family. He flew back to the opposite bank and selected a new open area to reply.

"Alice it is then," he wrote. "'Sir' is much too formal. I'm niether that old, nor a knight. And 'James' is simply too childish. How about something more eloquent? At my old school of Eton in London, I was known by all as King Jas." He grinned mentally to himself, silently challenging the girl to ask about his first nickname. The one before he earned his more famous captain title.

"It is nice outside." he continued after a little bit. "And I think I just might." Pausing to listen, it dawned on James that he knew what game the girl spoke of. "Just where are you from, my dear? Your hobbies are so like the ones I used to participate in...yet I can't seem to recall where."

Her blushing made Hook want to vanish. Had he done something to embaress her? Hastily he added on an apology. "Pictures are worth a thousand words. No shame in prefering to admire them."
